October 2016 De Soto United Methodist Church Volume 23, Issue 10 Living Water Liv From the Pastor Inside this issue: Pastor 1 Pastor News & Studies 2 Groups 3 Children & Family 4 Youth 5 Camp Chiippewa 6 Trunk-n-Treat 7 UMM, UMW, News 8 Calendar, Celebrations 9 Events 10 About Us 11 Another election season is upon us and now until November we will be bombarded with ads and pundits and fact-checks and, unfortunately, lots of vitriol. I understand our political process to be grueling, but it also seems to be more disheartening. It s important for us to nationally engage in the political process, in figuring out ways to help serve our communities and our country. This means listening and processing ideas that don t necessarily fit within our own political ideologies. Unfortunately I think many of us (myself included) have become so cocooned by those same ideologies (whether liberal or conservative or moderate), we forget to approach others with differing viewpoints as valid. We seek to de-humanize those who don t share our own political affiliations. Division seems to be the only way forward across the political landscape. This impacts our faith. How are we, as Christians, to really talk about the intersection of our faith and politics? How can we bridge the great divide that seems to be ever widening in a way that is true to our Christian selves? In October we ll be doing a sermon series titled Jesus for President: Talking About Things You Don t Talk About in Mixed Company (Election Edition) that will explore the intersection of faith and politics. We ll look at the words and actions of Jesus in helping us to remain true to our calling us disciples even in the midst of our differences of political opinions. It will give us opportunity to be challenged by what it means to be a faithful follower of Christ and a faithful citizen seeking the greater good. I look forward to joining all of you in worship as we explore this dynamic together! Peace, Pastor Jeff

Pastor Jeff October Evening Small Group: Holy Conversations: Bridging the Great Divide Wednesdays October 12, 19, 26 @ 7:00 PM Fellowship Hall Living in the world today we may wonder if we are living in the United States or the Divided States. Emotions run high on nearly every issue imaginable. How do we as Christians engage in fruitful conversation related to the variety of issues that are part of our national conversation? Join Pastor Jeff for this three week small group experience as we seek ways to turn difficult conversations into holy conversations. Contact Pastor Jeff for more information.
