Alleluia! Christ is risen!

HOLY COMMUNION RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD EASTER SUNDAY April 1, 2018 + 8:30 & 10:30 a.m. Exploring the promise of God for all The Holy Spirit gathers us in unity on the first day of the week, the day of Christ s resurrection ALLELUIA! Christ the green blade rises from the barren earth This year may be the one in which John s resurrection account is likely to be chosen over Mark s, perhaps because Mark s gospel ends so abruptly, with astonishment and fear rather than joyful proclamation. Yet Mark may speak to our experience more directly than the other gospels. Acts and Corinthians fill out the story by telling of appearances of the risen Christ. Peter says we ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And so do we, in a foretaste of the mountaintop feast where death will be no more. PRELUDE Rigaudon Christ Is Arisen Prelude to the Te Deum Alleluia! Rejoice and Sing GATHERING André Campra 11th century hymn Marc-Antoine Charpentier arr. Anna Laura Page At the sound of the bell, the assembly stands to face the worship leaders at the back of the church. EASTER PROCLAMATION repeated three times: P Alleluia! Christ is risen! a Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! PROCESSIONAL HYMN Jesus Christ Is Risen Today stanzas 2 & 3 in harmony 2

GREETING AND PRAYER OF THE DAY P The grace of our risen Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. a And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY P who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. a Amen. God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song Peter crosses the immense religious and social boundary that separates Jews from Gentiles in order to proclaim the good news of Jesus life, death, and resurrection, so that God s forgiveness in Jesus name would reach out to the Gentiles just as it had to Jews. EASTER WORD CHILDREN S WORD Children are invited to come forward; parents are welcome to come with their children. FIRST READING God raised Jesus on the third day Acts 10:34-43 Luke writes: Then Peter began to speak to them: I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all. 37 That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39 We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40 but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41 not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. The word of the Lord. a Thanks be to God. 3

The core of the Christian faith and Paul s preaching is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As the crucified and risen Christ appeared to the earliest of his followers, so we experience the presence of the risen Lord in the preaching of this faith. SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 Witnesses to the risen Christ Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, 2 through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you unless you have come to believe in vain. 3 For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, 4 and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. The word of the Lord. a Thanks be to God. GOSPEL PROCESSION Now the Green Blade Rises arr. Kevin McChesney Please stand as the procession moves into the midst of the assembly for the reading of the Gospel. GOSPEL Mark 16:1-8 The resurrection is announced The holy gospel according to Mark. a Glory to you, O Lord. The resurrection of Jesus is announced, and the response is one of terror and amazement. When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 They had been saying to one another, Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb? 4 When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them, Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you. 8 So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. The gospel of the Lord. a Praise to you, O Christ. 4

This hymn of praise was written for use at Central Lutheran by Cantor Sedio in 2002. EASTER CANTICLE OF PRAISE ALLELUIA! SERMON P Alleluia! Christ is risen! a Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! silence for reflection follows the sermon 5

HYMN OF THE DAY (hymn) 449 We Know That Christ Is Raised stanza 1 - all 2 - higher voices, all on Hallelujah! 3 - lower voicesall on Hallelujah! 4 - all NICENE CREED A With the whole church, let us proclaim our Easter faith. a We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. ALLELUIA! We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION A On this day of rejoicing, we pray for the church, the world, and all people in any need. after each petition: Lord in your mercy, a hear our prayer. P Receive these our prayers, gracious God, for the sake of the crucified and risen one, Jesus Christ, our Lord. a Amen. 6

MEAL PEACE P The peace of the risen Christ be with you always. a And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another. God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ GATHERING OF GIFTS An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. During this time, the table is set. After the offering is gathered, bread, wine, money, and other gifts are brought forward. The assembly stands as the procession reaches the chancel. Musical Offering Rejoice, All Spirits! Rejoice all spirits! The ascending sun shines alike on the living and the dead. As the true Helios, Christ climbed the heights of heaven. Christ the Sun of suns, risen from the wintry ground of death, now scatters the darkness from our path. Rejoice, O earth, in shining splendour, Radiant in the brightness of your King! Christ has conquered death! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes for ever! Alleluia! Exult in glory! The risen Saviour shines upon you! Alleluia! Ray Simpson Howard Helvey Offertory Prayer A Let us pray together. a Risen Christ, receive these gifts, with our hopes, dreams, and prayers. Reveal yourself to us in the breaking of the bread, that our eyes may be opened to see your presence among us, and our lives filled with the new life of your resurrection. Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING P The Lord be with you. a And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. a We lift them to the Lord. All who come seeking Jesus are invited to receive these gifts of God. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. a It is right to give our thanks and praise. P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy... join their unending hymn: Communion at this service is served standing at stations. Please follow the direction of the ushers to a communion station. Grape juice and gluten-free bread are available upon request. Children are welcome to receive communion or a blessing. 7

The presider continues with the Great Thanksgiving: P...we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. P... now and forever. Lord s Prayer (1975) a Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread and Invitation to the Table P The Lord swallows up death forever and makes a feast of rich food and wine. Eat, drink, come and see; the gift is for you. This Reformation era chorale is one of the gems of our tradition. J. S. Bach made numerous choral and instrumental arrangements. Schein (1586-1630) was one of Bach s predecessors as Cantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. He was one of the first early Baroque composers to incorporate the innovative Italianate style (monody, concertato elements and figured bass) into his works. Communion Christ Jesus Lay in Death s Stong Bands Johann Walter, arr. Johann Hermann Schein Prayer after Communion A Let us pray. God of abundance, with this bread of life and cup of salvation you have united us with Christ, making us one with all your people. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ, our Lord. a Amen. SENDING 8 BLESSING P May the risen Christ bring you all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope.

Almighty God, Father, + Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. a Amen. SENDING HYMN Thine Is the Glory God blesses and sends us in mission to the world DISMISSAL Please face the cross for the dismissal. A Alleluia! Christ is risen! a Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! A Go in peace. Share the good news. a Thanks be to God. The carillon sends the assembly into mission. 9

EASTERTIME A Sense of the Season Whereas in Lent we repented, in Eastertide we rejoice. Whereas we fasted, now we feast. Whereas we gave gifts and service in love, now we give witness. First, in Lent we repented. We kept the forty days, with praying, fasting and works of love. Then we celebrated the three days of Christ s passion, dying and rising. Now we delight in Eastertide, the fifty days, with rejoicing, feasting and giving witness in all manner of ways to all people that Christ is truly risen, the old world order is passed away and the reign of God is begun! Go and tell, the angel commands the women and us. Christ is risen. Christ s resurrection has thrown open doors long closed, has built bridges over chasms long divided. The season of Easter is fifty days long. It is a time of unbridled joy, of exuberant rejoicing. The church tells us, The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better as one great Sunday. These above all others are days for the singing of the Alleluia. Why is Eastertime fifty days? The ancient cultures that gave us the Bible had great respect for numbers. They believed that numbers contained hints about God and the meaning of life. The number seven was thought to contain fullness: There are seven days in the week, according to God s original way of ordering time, creating all that there is and resting. So if you multiply 7 times 7, you have fullness times fullness. But wait! 7 times 7 is 49! With God, there is always more more than we can ever imagine. So our holy season of Easter is even more than fullness times fullness. It s fullness times fullness and then some: 7 times 7 plus 1. That s what love is like: more than we can ever imagine. The fifty days are days for looking for the risen Lord among us, for hearing in each other s stories of rising from the big and small deaths, days when we experience something of Christ s triumphs. That s why we look to the newly baptized, robed in bright new clothes and oily with gladness: At Easter, they died and rose with Christ! Now they take their places with us. Together, like the apostles who were so full of the Spirit that people thought they were drunk, we rush about with good and giddy news: Death is not the last word! Life and love are forever! And slowly, painstakingly, we work together, together with Christ, to change this world into the world to come. Sing Alleluia! adapted 1997 LTP, Chicago IL. used with permission Easter flower donors are listed in the Easter Spirit. Large print service folders, assisted listening devices, and access seating are available to aid your participation in worship. Please inquire with an usher. 11
