The Dawn of His Rising, an Easter Cantata Eugene Butler And They Crucified The Lord And they crucified the Lord: and they nailed Him to a tree. And they mocked Him, and reviled Him, and cast lots for His garments. And they said: "If Thou be Christ, then save Thyself!" It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness o'er the land until the ninth hour. And Jesus cried with a loud voice saying, "Father, Father into Thy hands I commend my spirit." And He breathed His last. Oh Perfect Life of Love Oh perfect life of love. All, all is finished now. All that He left his throne above to do for us below! No work is left undone of all the Father willed; His toil and sorrows one by one, the scriptures have fulfilled. In perfect love He dies. For me, He dies for me! O all atoning sacrifice, I cling by faith to Thee. Were You There? Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble. Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? My Master Lies Asleep My Master lies asleep and is at rest. His heart has ceased to bleed, His eye to weep. The sun, ashamed, has dropped down in the west. My Master lies asleep. Now we are they that weep and vigil keep, with wrung heart in a sighing breast. While slow time and the shadows creep, renew thy youth as eagle from the nest. O Master, who has sown, arise to reap! My Master lies asleep. Now on the First Day of the Week Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to the tomb early; and they saw that the stone was rolled away from the tomb! Alleluia! For He has risen, risen as He said; from His three-day prison. Comes the dawn, the dawn is here, the dawn of His rising! When the Women Found the Stone Rolled Away When the women found the stone rolled away, they were perplexed, and they went in but could not find the body. And behold! Two men stood among them in dazzling raiment and said to them, Why do you seek the living among the dead? Do you remember what He told you: that the Son of man must be delivered up and be crucified, and on the third day, He shall rise again? But Mary Magdalene understood them not, and went outside the tomb and knelt there weeping. And there appeared a man before her saying, Woman, why do you weep. Whom do you seek? Mary: They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where to find Him. Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him and I will take Him away. Jesus: Mary.

Mary: Rabboni! Jesus: Do not touch me, for I am not yet ascended to my Father. Go to my brethren and tell them I am ascending to our God. And Mary told the disciples, I have seen the Lord! Why seek the living among the dead? Why seek the living among the dead? He lives; He lives; He lives! Up from the grave He arose. Alleluia! With a mighty triumph o er the grave; He arose a victor from the dark domain, and He lives forever with His saints to reign. He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose! Go and tell Peter and all the disciples: He is risen as He said! The tomb is open; the empty grave, it cannot hold Him. We will know Him; rejoice again! Shout the Lord is living! Sing! He lives indeed! Gone is sadness and gloom; He lives! Jesus: Peace be with you. Peace be with you; as the Father has sent me, so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit. Thomas: Unless I see in His hand the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and feel His side, I will not believe! Jesus: Put your finger here and see My side; put out your hand and place it in My side; do not be faithless, but believing. Thomas: My Lord and my God! Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain (Congregation rise and join Choir) Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness; God has brought His people into joy from sadness; Tis the spring of souls today; Christ has burst His prison, and from three days sleep in death, as the sun has risen. But today amidst the twelve Thou didst stand bestowing, that Thy peace which evermore passeth human knowing. Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness. God has brought His people into joy from sadness. All Authority in Heaven Jesus: All authority in heaven and on the earth has been given to Me. Go therefore, and make disciples of every nation, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; teaching them to observe all I have commanded you. And lo, I am with you forever, to the close of the age. Lo, I Tell You a Mystery Lo, I tell you a mystery; we shall not sleep, but we shall be changed! Christ has been raised from the dead; the first fruits of them that sleep! Death, where is thy victory? Death, where is thy sting? Death is swallowed up in victory! Alleluia! Amen!
