A FACTUAL TALE OF A HEROIC INTERFAITH MEETING FOR THE AGES. Plan to join the United Methodist Women for a trip to Saginaw to see The Sultan and the Saint. Thursday, September 28 6 PM Temple Theater, Saginaw Tickets: $4 Movie synopsis: In the year 1219, Francis of Assisi risked his life by walking across enemy lines to meet the Sultan of Egypt, the Muslim ruler and scholar Malik al-kamil. This remarkable encounter between Christian preacher and Muslim ruler effectively smashed the strategy of dehumanizing the enemy in the Crusades and forged new hope for peace. The Catholic Diocese of Saginaw and Saginaw Valley State University are sponsoring the film. Reservations can be made in advance. Contact Rene Johnson, 989.631.2378, to car pool with the UMW to the Temple Theater in Saginaw. Regular church office hours will resume on Monday, August 28. Mon. - Thur. 9 am - 5 pm Fridays 9 am - 4 pm Sermon Audio Just a reminder that audio of the weekly sermons is available on the church website, fumcmidweb.org. Page 4

Extra Handicapped Parking Due to the ongoing construction on Main Street, four additional handicapped parking spaces are available in the Larkin Street parking lot. COMING THIS FALL T O FIRST UMC! LIFE GROUPS Question: How can a big church like FUMC get more closely connected? Answer: LIFE GROUPS! This fall, we are launching Life Groups these are small groups, but with a new twist. Life Groups will include three components: FELLOWSHIP (growing closer to one another) DISCIPLESHIP (growing closer to God) MISSION (sharing the love of Christ with others) Our hope is that every person in this church will be in a Life Group. We all need the love and support of others. As one of our members said, You ll never know the power of a small group until you ve been in one! Look for more information on Life Groups coming soon. Living Cancer Together Support Group Tuesdays 6:30-8:00 pm Rooms 32-34 Page 5

Hearing assistance is available during worship services. For the hearing impaired, FUMC offers a loop system. Hearing aid and cochlear implant wearers with a telecoil setting can hear the service broadcast directly through their hearing aids. Others desiring hearing assistance may check out a portable receiver and headset from an usher. In a recent study, the Barna Research Group revealed a stunning statistic that continues to reverberate throughout the evangelical world. Only nine percent of professing Christians have a Biblical worldview. The Truth Project is a DVD-based small group curriculum comprised of thirteen one-hour lessons taught by Dr. Del Tackett. This home study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life. http://www.thetruthproject.org/whatistruthproject/ Join us for The Truth Project beginning on September 7. We will meet at 9:15 am to view the hour long video and then discuss what we have learned. The videos look at how God has instructed people in areas including Ethics, Science, History, Sociology, Education, and Labor. Please join us for this intriguing, thought provoking study. Who: All who are interested in learning more about how the Bible relates to our daily lives Where: Hearth Room When: Beginning Thursday morning, September 7 (9:15-11:15 am) Questions: Contact Peg Born, 430.5184, peg@bornhome.com Page 6

HOPE IS PART OF OUR RELIGION United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the global humanitarian aid organization of The United Methodist Church. We work in 80 countries worldwide, including the United States. Our mission is to alleviate human suffering that is caused by war, conflict, or natural disaster, with open minds and hearts to all suffering people. In times of acute crisis we partner with people to rebuild their livelihoods, health, and homes. We mobilize aid to stricken areas. We provide emergency supplies, fresh water, and temporary shelter. We stay as long as it takes to implement long-term recovery and rehabilitation. UMCOR is a member of Action by Churches Together, Church World Service, and Interchurch Medical Assistance. These global ecumenical alliances share the same mission to restore well-being to children, women, and men. UMCOR embodies the life-saving humanitarian presence of the people of The United Methodist Church. One hundred percent of our financial gifts go to these needs, as administrative costs are provided from other funds. Thanks for all your help when you give to UMCOR through our church. GROUP PRAYER OPPORTUNITIES AT FUMC Please join us for any of our group prayer meetings.
