November 2014 A Note from our Pastor, Bill Russell What a SUPER month we enjoyed during October. Between Autumn Evening, and all of the hours of hard work put in by so many folks, and Trunk or Treat, and the rapid-fire, intense fun that was, we have had a full month. Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make both events extremely successful. Now, at least for a short time, we get back to normal. Wednesday evenings for the next two weeks will be fellowship supper and then we'll be continuing our study of the book of James. On Wednesday night, the 19th, we will enjoy our traditional Thanksgiving dinner and then a Thanksgiving service in the sanctuary. This would be the perfect time for you to invite someone to Central and introduce them to the amazing fellowship we have together. We have been blessed with a number of visitors lately; be sure and invite them to that very special time of food, fellowship, and worship. They will be our guests and we can all get to know each other a little better. And, Advent starts on November 30. November gives us many chances for fun, food, fellowship, and worship at Central. I hope you won't miss any of it. BILL Veterans Day We will have a special observance for Veterans Day (Tuesday, November 11) during the church service on Sunday, November 9th. There will be songs and a special recognition for our veterans. In Britain, and other parts of Europe, November 11th is known as Armistice Day and commemorates all who, from whatever nation, have fallen in War. The Armistice agreed after WW1 was signed at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Also known as Poppy Day, most people wear a plastic or cloth poppy hand made by veterans and sold through a charity called The Royal British Legion. Why a poppy? The fields of northern France, where most of the WW1 battles were fought, are, to this day, a mass of poppies in the Summer.

Georges and Sarah Jane Smith Editor s Note IF YOU WANT TO RECEIVE THE BANNER BY E-MAIL CONTACT GEORGE GOODNIGHT AT 901-497-4385 or by e-mail at: wesalsdadd@hotmail.com. All contributions for the October issue must be submitted to the Church Office by September 24th. Editor: John Bennett Our Autumn Evening in Central Gardens was dedicated to the memory of Georges Smith, who sadly passed this year. Georges was the Lay Minister emeritus of our Church. Pictured above is Sarah Jane Smith and we were so pleased to see her at the event. Christian Church in Tennessee calls Interim Regional Minister On October 15th Sarah Jane Smith celebrated her 89th Birthday. She is pictured here with George Goodnight. We all wish you many more Happy Birthdays. Rev. Dr. Beth Dobyns has been called to begin serving as the Interim Regional Minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Tennessee. She brings extensive experience in specialized interim ministry as well as congregational, area, and regional ministry. Beth will be joining us from Florence Christian Church, Florence, Kentucky. Educated at Texas Christian University and Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas, and St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Beth is married to Bruce Dobyns, senior minister at First Christian Church in Mayfield, Kentucky. She is looking forward to getting acquainted with Disciples in Tennessee!

Building from the Board Because we were all fully committed to the preparations for the Autumn Evening in Central Gardens, we did not have a Board Meeting in October. Our next Elders and General Board Meetings will be held on Thursday, November 20th. Property and Grounds At last work has started on replacing the old rotted windows in the Education Building. This work is being entirely funded from a legacy designated to such work, and for that we are so grateful to the donor. When this work is completed the building will, once again, be weather proof and we can look to some much overdue redecoration and other essential work Remember hot weather? Well in the Summer s last gasp the Air Conditioning in the Gymnasium stopped working. A crew went up on the roof, where the units are situated, replaced belts and other parts, recharged the coolant and got the old system up and running again, just in time to be switched off! Repairs and maintenance will always be an ongoing issue with building like ours however, through legacies and other generosity, combined with the hard work of members of our congregation, the buildings and grounds have, in recent years, improved so much that we can be proud of the curb appeal of our Church. Where do we go next, the parking lot maybe! Out with the old. And in with the new

Trunk or Treat Following the success of last years inaugural event we had another Trunk or Treat to celebrate Halloween. This proved to be more successful than last year so hopefully it will now be an annual feature in our calendar. The event was preceded by a pumpkin carving evening instead of Bible study that week! Many of the congregation turned out in costume and decorated their cars. Candy was handed out to well over 200 children. Every picture tells a tale so let the pictures do the talking:

Central Celebrates the Successful Autumn Evening The evening of October 18 was a huge success: beautiful weather, a great crowd, fabulous food, generous supporters and a wonderful spirit! As of printing date the profit is approximately $13,500! The event was dedicated to Georges Smith, our Lay Minister who passed away this year and his widow, Sarah Jane was able to attend. Our newest event, The Wine Pull, planned and hosted by Russ & Shula Shaw-Cangelosi was a sell out! All 35 bottles were sold in short order and made our patrons very happy. The raffle this year was won by our favorite Choir Master, Amy Lindeman who said she really wanted to win and bought a large number of tickets, making this year s raffle the most profitable ever! The food and table presentation was truly incredible and we thank not only the entire congregation but especially Micki & Rob Artman. Daphne Brown and Carol Scarberry worked tirelessly in their respective areas (Tasteful Treasures & Silent Auction) and deserve a rousing AMEN for the success. The compliments received on the night of the event and for days afterwards gave evidence that it was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we want to tell everyone who helped THANK YOU! Just think what this money can accomplish in God s Kingdom.

Message from the Outreach Committee Thanksgiving Offering During this Thanksgiving season you can make a contribution to the Thanksgiving Special Offering that will help ensure that our young people who pursue an education in religion/ministry are motivated to Come Home to the Disciples Ministry. Through donations that help with scholarships and grants to the Disciples 14 member undergraduate institutions and 7 seminaries or divinity houses you are helping fund their education, giving them the opportunity to receive an education and remain in our Disciples Heritage. Coming home to a Disciples College or Theological School is possible through the scholarships and grants that are made available by generous individuals, the Disciples Mission Fund and your gifts to the Thanksgiving Offering. Together, we can make coming home to Disciples educational institutions more affordable. For generations thousands of students have attended the Colleges and Universities of the Christian Church receiving both a quality education and the opportunity to remain within our Disciple s heritage. The Thanksgiving Offering helps continue this tradition. The special offering will be collected November 9 and 16th. Outreach committee November Fellowship Schedule Central will celebrate our special Thanksgiving Dinner on November 19 and we invite everyone to attend & invite your friends / relatives for Traditional Turkey, dressing and all the fixins.
