FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM Shahada - repetition of the creed: There is no God but Allah, and Muhammed is His prophet. Salat - prayers Zakat - almsgiving Sawm - fast of Ramadan Hajj - pilgrimage to Mecca

PILGRIMAGE

SIXTH PILLAR OF ISLAM? Jihad the word means struggle. Often used in the sense of personal striving in the path of God.

SIXTH PILLAR OF ISLAM? The more common interpretation, and that of the overwhelming majority of the classical jurists and commentators, presents jihad as armed struggle for Islam against infidels and apostates. Bernard Lewis, professor of Near Eastern Studies, Princeton

SCRIPTURES OF ISLAM Qur an ( recitation ) - recorded revelation given to Muhammed. Hadith ( report ) - traditional sayings of Muhammed.

ISLAMIC THEOLOGY

CHARACTER OF GOD Allah Yahweh Unitarian Monotheism Master/Slave Relationship Allah determines all Trinitarian Monotheism Father/Son or Daughter Relationship Sovereign and Free will Author of good and evil Always good

WITNESSING Seminary conducted survey of 600 former Muslims who had become Christians. Most significant factor in their conversion was the emphasis on the love of God. A second factor was eternal security. Key verse: Ephesians 2:8-9. More Muslims are becoming Christians.

JESUS AND ISLAM Show them Jesus in the Qur an. - Jesus was born of a virgin, is the Messiah, has power over death, and knows the way to heaven (Sura 3:42-55). - Jesus was sinless (Sura 19:19). - Mohammed did not know what would happen to his followers (Sura 46:9).

BIBLE AND ISLAM Show them they can read the Bible. - Ask those who read the Scriptures that came before you (Sura 10:94). - One must read Old and New Testament - known as Before Books (Sura 4:136). - They are to observe the Torah and the Gospels (Sura 5:65-66).

SUNNI VS. SHIITE

Suni Shi ite 80% of population Less than 15% of population Elect successor Emphasize written traditions (Sunnah, Hadith) Separation of civil and religious authorities Successor was Ali, who was related to Muhammed Emphasize authority of the Imam Religious authorities control political power

HISTORY OF SPLIT There was a dispute among Muslims over the question of succession? Most of Muhammad s followers wanted the community of Muslims to determine who would succeed him. A smaller group thought Ali (married to Muhammad's daughter) should be the next leader.

HISTORY OF SPLIT The Sunnis prevailed and chose a successor to be the first caliph. Eventually, Ali was chosen as the fourth caliph, but not before violent conflict broke out. Two of the earliest caliphs were murdered. War erupted when Ali became caliph, and he too was killed in fighting in A.D. 661 near the town of Kufa (present-day Iraq).

HISTORY OF SPLIT War split the community of Muslims into two branches that would never reunite. The war continued with Hussein (Ali s son) leading the Shiites. His family and companions fought against a very large Arab army of the caliph and were all massacred. Hussein was decapitated and his head carried in tribute.

HISTORY OF SPLIT The symbolism of Hussein s death holds much spiritual power for Shiites. This is a picture of Imam Hussein held by a Shiite Muslim during a protest.

12TH IMAM In the 10th century, the 12th Shiite Imam went into hiding. They believe the Mahdi will come back at the end of time when their is a global conflict. Those who believe in the 12th Imam are known as Twelver Shiites. They are the majority of the Shiites in the world today.

ISIS HISTORY

BACKGROUND ISIS was once known as al-qaeda in Iraq. ISIS is more brutal than al- Qaeda (disagreed over tactics). ISIS is the richest terrorist group. It has more firepower than any other jihadist organization. They now control territory as large as an entire nation-state.

ISIS The ISIS troops have slaughtered Jews, Christians, Yazidis, Alawites, and even Shiite Muslims. ISIS fighters mark the homes of Christians with an Arabic symbol that has come to mean Nazarene - a pejorative Middle Eastern term for Christians.

ISIS Their actions: They have sold women as sex slaves. They have beheaded men, women, and children. They have captured and burned alive captives. Their influence: They are more brutal than al-qaeda. They control more land than many countries in the Middle East. They control more firepower than any jihadist organization in history and are the world s richest terrorist group - hundreds of millions of dollars.

ISIS HISTORY In the ISIS Crisis, the authors connect five dots. - Dot One: The Mujahideen - Dot Two: The Taliban - Dot Three: al Qaeda - Dot Four: al Qaeda in Iraq - Dot Five: ISIS

ISIS HISTORY Dot One - Mujahideen fought against Russia and were supported by the United States. One of the leaders was Osama bin Laden. Dot Two - Taliban filled the vacuum created when Soviet domination ended. They were students of a radical form of Islam taught in Pakistan. Mohammed Omar seized power and allowed Osama bin Laden back into the country to build al Qaeda.

ISIS HISTORY Dot Three - al Qaeda (the base) carried our various attacks (Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Tanzania) and 9/11. Dot Four - al Qaeda became a franchise operation. The leaders in Iraq was Abu Musab al-zarqawi. Dot Five - ISIS filled the power vacuum when al- Zarqawi was killed. Abu Bakr al-baghdadi became the head of the Islamic State of Iraq. This was happening during the so-called Arab Spring.

ISIS THEOLOGY

ISIS THEOLOGY Islam divides the world into two spheres: the house of Islam (dar-al-islam) and the house of war (dar-alharb). The house of Islam are nations under the control of Muslims where Sharia law is enforced. The house of war includes nations not under Muslim control and do not submit to Sharia.

ISIS THEOLOGY Under a jihadist interpretation of Islam, there will be a constant conflict between the house of Islam and the house of war until the house of war is transformed into the house of Islam. The conflict will not end until all land is conquered for Allah, and a global Islamic state, known as the Caliphate, is established. Sharia law will be enforced by the supreme leader, known as the caliph.

ISLAMIC THEOLOGY Sunni Shiite Successor Abu Bakr Ali Abi Talib Criterion Qualified Descendant Proponents Al-Qaeda, ISIS Iranian Groups Leaders Imams Ayatollahs Authority Wise, but fallible Infallible Followers 80% 15%

ABU BAKR AL- BAGHDADI

ISIS THEOLOGY July 4, 2014 - Abu Bakr al-baghdadi was proclaimed at the Mosque in Mosul as the Caliph Ibrahim and leader of the Islamic State. Fear Allah as he should be feared and do not die except as Muslims.... Go forth, O mujahidin in the path of Allah. Terrify the enemies of Allah and seek death... for the dunyā will come to an end, and the hereafter will last forever.

ISIS ACTIONS

ISIS CALL TO ACTION Sheik Abu Muhammad al-adnani (ISIS spokesman) called on Muslims living in Western countries to find an infidel and smash his head with a rock, poison him or even destroy his crops. These are allusions to statements by Muhammed in the Qur an to Muslims living in infidel countries.

ISIS GOALS ISIS is not content with spreading jihad in Iraq and Syria, but has set its sights on larger targets. For example, ISIS has threatened to destroy the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque in Mecca. We will kill those who worship stones in Mecca and destroy the Kaaba.

ISIS IN AMERICA? The subtitle of his book is ISIS in your own backyard. His warnings might have been easy to shrug off a few weeks ago. The attack in Garland, Texas was a reminder of the influence of ISIS. ISIS took credit for the attack.

ISIS IN AMERICA? FBI Director James Comey told the National Association of Attorneys General that ISIS is a chaotic spider web that avidly uses social media to radicalize people across the United States. We have investigations of people in various stages of radicalizing in all 50 states. This is in all 50 states and in ways that are very hard to see.

THREE WAYS TO ATTACK City Wolves - James Comey talks about a network of supporters and sympathizers in every state. He calls these homegrown jihadists city wolves. Returnees - Department of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson admitted that 40 of the estimated 180 those traveled overseas to fight ISIS have already returned. Open Border - former CIA officer Brian Fairchild expressed concerns about smuggling biological or chemical weapons.

ISIS ATTACKS ISIS has been using very sophisticated technology and social media to recruit others to their cause. No longer does a potential jihadist have to travel to another country (Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan) to be trained. It can happen in our country. James Comey - ISIS is focusing on the uniformed military and law enforcement - It s like the devil sitting on their shoulders, saying Kill, kill, kill.
