THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD This Is My Beloved Son, with Whom I Am Well Pleased January 8, 2017 Get to KNOW The God who KNOWs NEWton Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, But seek first the Kingdom of God. (Matt 6:24,32 ESV) WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS HOLY BAPTISM Page 268ff We welcome into the Family James Kingery and Kalleigh Berndt through the Waters of Holy Baptism. ENTRANCE HYMN Father Welcomes LSB 605 PSALM Psalm 98 The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters. Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness. The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, Glory! 3
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters. SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River You proclaimed Him Your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. C Make all who are baptized in His name faithful in their calling as Your children and inheritors with Him of everlasting life; P through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, C one God, now and forever. Amen OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 42:1 9 Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it 4
and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. EPISTLE READING 2 Thessalonians 3:6 13 Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone s bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE P You are my beloved Son; C with you I am well pleased. Alleluia. 5
HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 3:13 17 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the third chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. HYMN Beautiful Savior LSB 537 SERMON This Is My Beloved Son, with Whom I Am Well Pleased By Pastor John M. Moore CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed OFFERING OFFERTORY (LSB pp 159,160) INSTALLATION OF CONGREGATIONAL OFFICERS THE CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION P The bread that we break and the wine that we bless, is it not the body and blood poured out for us through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ? C Yes, it is the gift He gave on the night in which He was betrayed. We being many are made one in the body of Christ. Prepare us Lord, to receive You as we come to Your table and receive your gifts of body and blood. Lord, teach us to pray 6

Announcements BUILDING HEALTHY FAMILIES Banging your head against a wall burns 150 calories an hour. However, it s not an effective way to relieve stress or improve relationships! Children are indeed a blessing from the Lord, but parenting kids today can be a real challenge. They may not yet carry out any recognizably human activities. Nevertheless, scientific observations define them as nothing other than human lives, worthy of the same respect the Scriptures assign us all. They look and act exactly like a human being ought to in these beginning stages of her growth. Rev. Michael W.
