MISSIONS AND OUTREACH SUNDAY (THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST) August 19, 2018 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. THE GROWING SEASON in the year of missions

WELCOME TO FIRST CHURCH We are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us this morning. You ve joined us at a special time in our year. It s our Growing Season. Find out more about The Growing Season in other parts of the bulletin. Founded in 1821, First Church is the oldest Protestant church in the area and the oldest Methodist church in Florida. This historic church, with four regular Sunday services, has a membership of 3200 and is overflowing with life. If you are visiting, we hope that you will consider becoming a member of our church family. You may join any Sunday by profession of faith or transfer of membership. Come and be a part of what God is doing here during our Growing Season. THE GROWING SEASON: MISSIONS AND OUTREACH Today is the second Sunday of The Growing Season, our annual discipleship campaign at First Church! Each Sunday, during The Growing Season we take a look at one of our core visions of Christian Education, Missions and Outreach, Worship, Evangelism, and Christian Stewardship and learn through these things how to be better disciples of Jesus Christ. Today we are focusing on Christian Missions and Outreach. We ll hear about how First Church is doing missions in the world and we ll have an opportunity to sign up to be a part of some of the ministries that do outreach in our community. Greeters are handing out missions pamphlets from which you can read about some of the ways First Church works in the community, and you can sign up to be a part. Join in the work of the Church this Growing Season! NURSERY & CHILDREN S BULLETINS Nursery is available this morning for children up to five years old. If you need help locating the nursery, please see an usher or greeter for assistance. Also, children s worship bulletins and crayons are available in the narthex. FLOWERS The flowers in the Sanctuary today are given to the glory of God and in celebration of Wayne and Alice Cartee s 50th wedding anniversary and Henry and Jane Roberts 56th wedding anniversary. The rose on the alter this morning reminds us to give praise and thanksgiving to Almighty God for the gift of Mabel Jane Wilkins, born to Ashton and Tyler Wilkins on August 14, 2018. Temporary church building in Mwanza, Tanzania

His hymn is in the same unusual meter as William Kethe s translation of Psalm 104, and celebrates in rich language the works of God in creation. TODAY S LECTIONARY SCRIPTURES First Lesson: 1 Kings 2:10-13, 3:3-14. David dies after reigning forty years. Solomon, his son and successor, prays for wisdom to dis cern between good and evil in order to govern the people according to God s will. God promises to grant his request. Psalm: 111. The psalmist calls the congregation to praise God, whose works are great, who provides for all, and who has sent redemption. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:15-20. Paul calls the Ephesians to walk carefully, not to be foolish but wise in the ways of the Lord. He calls for them to give thanks to God for all things, in the name of Jesus. Gospel Lesson: John 6:51-58. In a foreshadowing of the Eucharist, Jesus tells the Jews that eternal life is found in eat(ing) my flash and drink(ing) my blood. As God s life is found in Christ, whoever eats this bread will live for ever. DAILY READINGS The daily readings expand the range of biblical reading in worship and personal devotion by providing daily citations for a three-year cycle. These readings complement the Sunday readings: Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect on and digest what they heard in worship. Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead. Psalm Old Test. New Test. MONDAY 36 Genesis 43:1-15 Acts 6:1-7 TUESDAY 36 Genesis 45:1-15 Acts 7:9-16 WEDNESDAY 36 Genesis 47:13-26 Mark 8:14-21 THURSDAY 34:15-22 Joshua 22:1-9 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 FRIDAY 34:15-22 Joshua 22:10-20 Romans 13:11-14 SATURDAY 34:15-22 Joshua 22:21-34 Luke 11:5-13 MISSION FOCUS AUGUST MISSION FOCUS: The Growing Season in the Year of Missions Over the next two months, our year-long focus on missions will be woven into the 5 core visions that guide our ministry at First Church.
