Coastal Community Church 2016 Lent Devotional Guide

Coastal observes Lent as a deliberate way to join with the church around the world in preparing for Easter. This Lent Devotional is meant to be a simple and significant way to connect with God each Sunday during Lent and daily during Holy Week. History of Lent The early church created a purposeful time to prepare for Easter and called it Lent from a word meaning "spring." This preparation included intentional disciplines, such as fasting and prayer, and lasted 40 days to symbolize other significant Scripture stories. The 40 days were to take spiritual inventory, to clean out the things that hindered their relationship with Jesus, to remember why they were baptized, and to renew their commitment to the way of Jesus. How to Use this Devotional A Scripture reading is provided for reflection, followed by an invitation for response. In the response portion you may want to incorporate art, rather than verbalizing your thoughts. In other words, draw a picture of what comes to mind instead of providing a verbal response. The Lent Devotional is also designed to incorporate symbols to help communicate and remember God s story. You are given the opportunity to light candles - six purple and one white. The candles symbolize the six Sundays of Lent and Easter Sunday. In addition, prayer pots can be used with the Sunday and Holy Week readings. A prayer pot is a small clay pot that holds tangible objects that reflect the Scripture reading and the practical activity suggested. If you would like to make a prayer pot, you can follow the instructions below. In addition to the devotions, we have created a daily experiential calendar. (Download the calendar at coastalchurchmaine.com under our Practices tab under the sub-tab of Church Calendar). Prayer Pot Supplies Sand. Flower. Heart. Palm Branch. Bandage. Tissue. Seed. Dime. Modeling Clay. Number 3. Cross. Rock. Easter. Lily. Instructions Take a piece of modeling clay and mold it into a pot shape. Add the objects above to the prayer pot as described in the Lent Devotional.

First Sunday of Lent February 14 Light the first purple candle. Read: Matthew 4:1-11 Say: Respond: After Jesus was baptized He was led into the desert by the Holy Spirit. During Jesus forty days in the desert He fasted. Jesus was there to think hard about His identity and work. Weakened by hunger He faced temptation. Look at the three temptations and talk about the meaning behind each one. Where do you find yourself in this story? Read Psalm 139:23-24. Pray and ask God to lead you in His ways and overcome the temptation to follow your own way. Consider doing a fast during Lent so that you can be- come more aware of God s provision for you. Prayer Pot: Pour the sand into the prayer pot as a reminder of Jesus time in the desert acquainting Himself with our weakness. Second Sunday of Lent February 21 Light two purple candles. Read: Luke 6:27-36 Say: Respond: Jesus command to love our enemies seems nearly impossible to practice. It goes against every fiber of our being. It is hard for us to feel love towards an enemy, but Christian love is possible because we were first loved by God. We are able to love because God gives us His love, without condition or merit. Think about someone that you find hard to love. Take a piece of paper and write this person s name on it. Write down a few words that are positive about this person. Next write down one thing that this person has done to hurt you. Now, pray that God would help you know what you need to do next. When you are done praying draw a heart around this person s name as a symbol of your hope that God can give you the ability to love this person. Prayer Pot: Put the heart in the prayer pot as a first step toward loving your enemies.

Third Sunday of Lent February 28 Light three purple candles. Read: Luke 10:25-29 and Luke 6:35-37 Say: Respond: Jesus is asked the question that everyone asks at some point, What must I do to have eternal life? What is His answer? We are also reminded that our enemies are our neighbors. Today we are going to confront something that gets in the way of us loving others. Pride. Pride is when we think more highly of ourselves than we should. Think of someone who did something to hurt you or made you mad. Now think of a time that you hurt some- one or made them mad. Write your thoughts and feelings surrounding these circumstances down in a journal. God asks us to forgive others the way He forgives us...completely and not keeping it in our minds to bring up again. Forgive also, as you want others to forgive you. Prayer Pot: Take a bandage and place it in the prayer pot. Ask God to help heal your and other s hearts with forgiveness. Fourth Sunday of Lent March 6 Light four purple candles. Read: James 3:13-4:12 Say: Respond: James gives us wisdom on the danger of wanting what others have. He warns that this desire causes disorder, fighting and conflict in our lives. Ask yourself: Who do I envy? What things do I crave? What makes me grumpy when I can t have it? Prayer Pot: Write down on a slip of paper something that consumes your thoughts (i.e. food, what you wear, money, popularity). Think of a way you can practice the wisdom James speaks of in this area of your life and share it with someone else. Take a seed and place it in the prayer pot. Ask Jesus to grow in you the peace that comes with being content.

Fifth Sunday of Lent March 13 Light five purple candles. Read: James 5:13-19 (optional extra reading: Psalm 130) Say: Respond: Lent is a time to look inside our hearts, repent and ask God to enter the dark places in our soul. During this time of year nature can give us a picture of hope as we do the work of Lent. Can you picture a flower growing after a cold winter, pushing through the dark, cold, hard earth and then breaking through the top of the soil and being alive for you to see? Tell Jesus or show Him in your heart how it might feel to come alive like a flower feeling the sun shine on you, after a long, cold winter. Are there some times when you feel like your heart is in a dark place because of something that is happening in your life? Take time to tell Jesus about one of these times. Now, go outside and do this body prayer together: Take me as I am, (arms extended to heaven) Summon out what I shall be; (arms outstretched to your sides) Set your seal upon my heart (two hands on your heart) and live in me." (bow from the waist) Prayer Pot: Take a small flower and place it in the prayer pot. Thank Jesus for giving us new life and hope that God brings beauty through difficult times in our lives.

Holy Week The sixth week of Lent is Holy Week, the week before Easter. It begins with great rejoicing on Palm Sunday and ends with the three darkest days of the Christian year - Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday - when we recall the betrayal, arrest, crucifixion, death and burial of Jesus. These three days are called the Triduum (TRID-ee-um). These devotions will help you set this week apart and be intentional about entering into the mystery of Easter. We gradually light the candles this week as we get closer to the light of the resurrection. However, we also blow out the candles after each reading, remembering that this is a dark and sorrowful week when we remember the suffering of Jesus. As you blow out the candles, take a moment of silence to remember. On Easter Sunday you will light all the candles and enjoy the fullness of the light. If you ve been using the prayer pot, empty it out on Palm Sunday as a symbol of starting this week with a fresh, new focus on Jesus. Light six purple candles Sixth Sunday of Lent March 20 (Palm Sunday) Read: John 12:12-19 (for small children stop at verse 15 to keep it simple) I wonder why the people waved palm branches and shouted blessings at Jesus and called Him the King? I wonder if other kings entered cities sitting on a donkey? For verses 16-19, I wonder why the Pharisees were angry about people praising Jesus as King? Lord Jesus, You are the King. You are good and humble and powerful and gentle. We praise You, our King. Amen. Prayer Pot: Take a piece of palm branch and place it in the prayer pot. Say a prayer praising Jesus for being the Prince of Peace and the King of all Kings.

Monday of Holy Week March 21 Light the first purple candle saying, We remember Jesus sorrow while praying in the garden. Read: Isaiah 42:1-4 and Mark 14:32-34 We remember today that Jesus went to the garden to spend time talking to His Father. We just read in Isaiah the Words spoken from the Father about the Son. What are some of the things the Lord God says about His Servant, His Son? What is the Servant like and what is His work? Lord Jesus, You are God s Son, the Servant who tenderly cares for those who are lonely, sad, lost and broken. Jesus, You know what it feels like to feel sorrow. Thank You for Your faithful love for us. Amen. Prayer Pot: Take a tissue and place it in the prayer pot. Ask God to help you comfort others when they are sad. Pray for someone you know who is hurting and sad. Blow out candle. Tuesday of Holy Week March 22 Light the first purple candle saying, We remember Jesus sorrow while praying in the garden. Light the second purple candle saying, Today we remember the night Jesus was betrayed. Read: Psalm 31:12-16 and Mark 14:10, 43-46 Even though Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him, I wonder how He felt when Judas kissed Him and then gave Him up to be arrested? I wonder if Jesus was afraid? I wonder if you have ever been afraid? Lord Jesus, You trusted Your Father, even when Your life was scary and You were afraid. Help us to trust You when we are afraid. Amen. Prayer Pot: Take a dime and place it in the prayer pot. Ask God to give you strength when you are tempted to make choices that go against God s best ways for you. Blow out candles.

Wednesday of Holy Week March 23 Light the first purple candle saying, We remember Jesus sorrow in the garden. Light the second purple candle saying, We remember the night Jesus was betrayed. Light the third purple candle saying, Today we remember when Jesus was denied by the religious leaders and by Peter. Read: Luke 9:18-22 (point out that Jesus is asking this ques- tion to Peter), Mark 14:1 and Mark 14:66-72 What do the priests want to do to Jesus? I wonder how Jesus felt knowing this? Peter followed Jesus on the night Jesus was arrested. While waiting outside the place Jesus was being questioned, people began to ask Peter if he was one of Jesus disciples. What was Peter s response? I wonder why Peter said this? Lord Jesus, when You went to Jerusalem You knew you were going to be betrayed by Your friends, and by the priests, and then You d be killed. You went because You trusted Your Father and because You love Your people. We are so grateful that You love us that much. Amen. Prayer Pot: Take a number 3 and place it in the prayer pot. Ask Jesus to help you tell others about your faith. Think about ways you can share your faith with others so you will be ready when the opportunity comes. Blow out candles.

Thursday of Holy Week March 24 (Maundy Thursday) Light the first purple candle saying, We remember Jesus sorrow in the garden. Light the second purple candle saying, We remember the night Jesus was betrayed. Light the third purple candle saying, We remember when Peter denied knowing Jesus. Light the fourth purple candle saying, Today we remember when Jesus was accused and sentenced to die. Read: Mark 15:1-5 and Mark 15:12-14 I wonder why Jesus didn t answer in His defense when the people accused Him of doing wrong? I wonder why the people wanted Jesus to die? I wonder how Jesus felt standing alone while people accused and refused to believe He is the Son of God? Lord Jesus, this is a dark day. Help us to remember You today and remember what You suffered because You love us. Amen. Prayer Pot: Today we don t place anything in the prayer pot to rep- resent Jesus being silent when He was accused of being a criminal. Pray and ask God to help you know when to stay silent when others are mistreating you and to know when to stand up for others when they are being accused or mocked. Blow out candles.

Friday of Holy Week March 25 (Good Friday) Light the first purple candle saying, We remember Jesus sorrow in the garden. Light the second purple candle saying, We remember the night Jesus was betrayed. Light the third purple candle saying, We remember when Peter denied Jesus. Light the fourth purple candle saying, We remember when Jesus was accused. Light the fifth purple candle saying, Today we remember Jesus sacri- fice of His life. Read: Mark 15:16-20 and 33-39 How does it make you feel to hear what the soldiers did to Jesus? I wonder why Jesus let them crucify Him? We read that the curtain in the temple tore in two. I wonder why this happened? Lord Jesus, this is a dark day. It is the day You were crucified and died. Help us to remember You today and to remember what You suffered because You love us. Amen. Prayer Pot: Take a small cross and place it in the prayer pot. Spend time in silent prayer allowing yourself time to be sad over what Jesus went through for us. Blow out candles.

Saturday of Holy Week March 26 (Holy Saturday) Light the first purple candle saying, We remember Jesus sorrow in the garden. Light the second purple candle saying, We remember the night Jesus was betrayed. Light the third purple candle saying, We remember when Peter denied Jesus. Light the fourth purple candle saying, We remember when Jesus was accused. Light the fifth purple candle saying, We remember Jesus sacrifice of His life. Light the sixth purple candle saying, Today we remember when Jesus was laid in the tomb. Read: Mark 15:42-46 I wonder why Joseph asked for Jesus body? I won- der if Joseph believed Jesus was the Son of God, or if he thought Jesus death was the end? Lord Jesus, today is a dark day. This is the day You laid in the earth, dead and buried. Help us to remember You today and to remember what You suffered because You love us. Amen. Prayer Pot: Take a rock and place it in the prayer pot. Thank God for the promise of life after death. Blow out candles.

Easter Sunday March 27 Begin by lighting all six purple candles and the white Easter candle. As you light the white candle proclaim, Christ is Risen! and everyone else responds, He is risen indeed! Read: Mark 16:1-7 I wonder why God brought Jesus back to life? I won- der how people felt when they heard the news that Jesus was alive? Lord Jesus, this is a bright and glorious day. It is the day You rose from the dead. You beat death and sin and sadness and pain. Help us to remember Your amazing triumph today. We give You praise and honor and glory. Amen. Prayer Pot: Take an Easter Lily and place it in the prayer pot. Praise God for the victory over death by singing a song, dancing or shouting Alleluia! *Portions of this guide where taken from Kimberlee Conway Ireton s Family Lent Devotionals.
