Grand Knight's Report Brother Knights In Christ: To the Council officers who served this year. A heartfelt thank you for your dedication and your abilities to give to your brothers. I would like to thank, all my brothers and sisters and families for donating their time and efforts to make our events successful. I just returned from the 114th Florida State Convention held May 25-27, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando. I am happy to report that Donald Kahrer, Jr. was re-elected as State Deputy and the state of the Florida Council is healthy and well. I am proud to announce we received the Knights of Columbus-Florida State Council 2017-2018 Church Activities Award, Second Place-Division 3. Elections of officers will be held during our next council meeting. I encourage everyone to come and vote. You need to have an active role in elections. It is for the health of the council that the men of this council participate in the election process. Please make the time! We will be conducting our Annual Installation of Officers for our Council and Assembly at 6:00pm on June 23, 2018 at the Parish Hall. The month of June is the last month of our fraternal year. I would ask each one of you to recruit one new Knight for us to reach our membership goal. Let's secure a bright future for the Knights of Columbus. Attract to the brotherhood through charity and recruit more members. You are doing it for Christ because we are disciples of God. Just want to mention that we received a congratulations and a portrait of the Holy Family Prayer from the Knights of Columbus in New Haven, Connecticut from the Director of Membership Recruitment Promotion Program. I want to thank you all for the efforts, support and time you have put into making this fraternal year endeavors a success. Our continued success depends on you taking the first step and volunteering for the event, as charity is our Order's first principle and basis for all we do as Brother Knights. May God Bless all of you and your families. Your Brother In Christ, Cesar Mascardo Grand Knight Council 7027 Page 2

Deacon s Teaching By Deacon Chris Christopher Mary, the mother of God - Theotokos Non-Catholic Christians presume that Catholics worship Mary and look upon her as a goddess who gave birth to their God - all without Biblical support. The truth is that Catholics worship only God [Latria]. But they honor, love, and venerate Mary [Dulia] as the most saintly, Spirit-filled woman and seek her intercession [The Communion of Saints]. Because she is the most saintly, Spirit-filled woman, Mary s veneration is termed Hyperdulia, but she is still not divine. Regarding her giving birth to God, let s take a simple quiz: Do you believe in the hypostatic union (Jesus s two natures, human and divine in one person)? Do you believe in the hypostatic union while Jesus was conceived and living in Mary`s womb? If you believe that Mary is Theotokos (Greek for the Mother of God) then why do you not revere The Mother of God above all other women? If you do not believe that Mary is Theotokos, then at what point was Jesus hypostatic union broken? This separation of Jesus divinity and humanity was first advanced by Nestorius(386 450),Patriarch of Constantinople (from 428 to 431). "Nestorianism" refers to the doctrine that there are two separate hypostases in the Incarnate Christ: The one Divine and the other Human. The Council of Ephesus [431 AD] condemned this false teaching and decreed that the Incarnate Christ is a single hypostasis, at once God and man. This doctrine is known as the Hypostatic Union. Nestorius's opponents charged him with detaching Christ's divinity and humanity into two persons existing in one body, thereby denying the reality of the Incarnation. Modern-day Christians who deny Mary as Theotokos say that she gave birth to the Human Jesus, not the divine Jesus thus she is no different from any other woman and deserving no higher veneration. But, this position is also without Biblical support. If the Virgin Mary is not to be considered Theotokos, then let s take another simple quiz: At what point was Jesus divinity separated from his humanity: In the beginning, At his conception, During his gestation, or At his moment of birth? A follow-up question would be: At what point were his two natures recombined into his one person? Scripture is also silent on these points! Marian Dogmas The Catholic Church has honored Mary by proclaiming four major doctrines of faith about her based on Holy Scripture and tradition. They are her: Divine Maternity, Perpetual Virginity, Immaculate Conception, and Assumption Into Heaven. 1) The dogma of Mary s Divine Maternity: Page 4

This dogma declared Mary as the mother of God (Theotokos, God-Bearer ), at the third ecumenical Council of Ephesus in A.D. 431. The basis of the dogma is that Jesus has both the Divine nature and the Human nature in one person. Hence, The Man-Christ is the God-Christ, and his mother is God s mother. 2) The dogma of Mary s Perpetual Virginity: This dogma means that before and after giving birth to Jesus, Mary was a virgin, and that she remained a virgin for the rest of her life. Joseph, therefore, did not have sexual relations with her and she never physically bore any other children. The Perpetual Virginity of Mary has never been officially defined as a Marian Dogma of the Church, but because of its universal acceptance and continued reference in Papal documents throughout the history of the Church, it has come to be accepted as a Marian Dogma. Consequently, it can be said that the perpetual virginity of Mary is a Catholic Dogma by virtue of the ordinary and universal Magisterium. The Protestant reformers Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Ulrich Zwingli all affirmed their belief in Mary s perpetual virginity. [Universal Magisterium] While the Bible does mention the "brothers" and "sisters" of Jesus (Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3), they are never referred to as the sons and daughters of the Virgin Mary - because they are not her children. Mark (15:40) mentions a woman called "Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses". James and Joses are two of the "brethren" of Jesus mentioned in Matthew (13:55), so this woman is clearly their mother, not the Mother of Jesus. This "other Mary" (Mt 28:1) is mentioned in John (19:25) as "Mary, the wife of Cleophas", the "sister" of Jesus' mother ("sister" here probably refers to a sister-in-law, since they are both called Mary). So, James and Joses are the sons of Cleophas and the other Mary, who are most likely Jesus' uncle and aunt on Joseph's side. Since Simon and Jude are mentioned with James and Joses, they are probably also Jesus' cousins. That the Bible calls them "brothers" does not contradict this. In that culture, as in many Middle Eastern cultures today, the term "brother" was used for many relatives who were not full siblings, such as half or stepbrothers, brothers-in-law, nephews, cousins of various degrees, etc. Thus, Jesus' "brothers and sisters" were actually His cousins; Scripture calls them "brothers and sisters" in accord with the custom of the time. Deacon Chris invites you to send him questions or suggested topics for the Deacon s Teaching column. The term Brothers/Sisters is used in referring to fellow Christians yet today. 3) The dogma of Immaculate Conception: The Immaculate Conception is a dogma based mainly on Christian tradition and theological reasoning. It was defined by Pope Pius IX as a dogma of faith through the Apostolic Constitution Ineffabilis Deus (December 8, 1854). It states, From the first moment of her conception, Mary was preserved immune from original sin by the singular grace of God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, savior of human race (CCC #491). This means that original sanctity, innocence and justice were conferred upon her, and that she was exempted from all the evil effects of original sin - excluding sorrow, pain, disease and death which are temporal penalties inherited through Adam s disobedience (Catholic Encyclopedia). 4) The dogma of Mary s Assumption (Munificentissimus Deus - The Most Bountiful God - November 1, 1950): we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma, that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. Let us thank God for the Church that his Son endowed with divine authority, the Holy Spirit that has guided it since Pentecost, and continues to teach Truth about God s plan of salvation for all mankind. Next month we ll ask, What is the Holy Trinity? Please email them to cjchristopher2010@gmail.com or to the newsletter at Page 5

Culture of Life by Dan Arndt prolifeman53@gmail.com We are Knights, We are Pro-life Brothers, we come to the end of our council s fiscal year. Prolife or Culture of Life is one of the most important things we protect as a Knight, a Catholic, and a person. I always like to refer to a statement made by Mother Theresa, at the National Prayer Breakfast February 1994 in which she stated and if we except that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another. How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Jesus gave even His Life to love us. So, the mother who is thinking of abortion, should be helped to love, that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts. Our council, district, and region has access to a way to persuade a woman as they drive to the abortion facilities. Please attend the next class on sidewalk advocacy put on for free by Emerald Coast Coalition for Life. Abortions are still being performed at the Pensacola abortion facility on Thursday and Friday. Your presence may persuade a mother not to have the abortion. If you are reading this article remember we can make change with love. Show love and protect the child and with that you are also protecting the parents. JUNE Universal: Social Networks That social networks may work towards that inclusiveness which respects others for their differences. http://popesprayerusa.net/popes-intentions/ Page 6
