Your Financial Stewardship For the week ended August 5, 2018 Weekly Envelopes... $ Offertory Loose... $ 20,471.00 1,385.00 Weekly Joyful Giving Budget... $ 23,363.00 This week we have a special Holy Day Mass honoring the Assumption of Mary into Heaven, body and soul. Our parish will be offering a vigil Mass on Tuesday, August 14 at 5:30 pm in the main church. We will also be offering an 8:45 am morning Mass and a 5:30 pm evening Mass on the Holy Day itself, August 15. Be sure to check neighboring parishes if our times do not fit your work schedule. We are blessed to be in a big city with many Mass options. The recognition and honoring of the Assumption of Mary body and soul into heaven goes back in the Church s memory to its earliest days. It found concrete proclamation in the Church under Pius XII in the 1950 s, after broad consultation with the long tradition of the Church and all the bishops of the world. The dogma serves as a great consolation to all of us reminding us that the afterlife is both a healed soul and a renewed body. When you and I die, our souls come before God but our bodies remain with the earth until the final resurrection and the emergence of what scripture calls a new heavens and a new earth. We are not fully complete in the life to come until we are fully united with our own resurrected body forever. The details of which will have to be experienced to be understood. Mary has followed where Christ has already gone and to where we hope to follow too. I hope you can join us this week for this consoling Marian feast. Next Monday is the Feast Day of St. Bernard on August 20. This is our parish Feast Day. That s a big deal. August 20 marks the day of his death or as the Church thinks of it, his entrance into Heaven. He was from France in the 12 th Century. He was born of noble parents and was very well-educated. He renounced the posh life and embraced the life of an austere monk in the Cistercian community. He soon became known for his faith, wisdom, simplicity, learning and integrity. He was thus tapped to found many monasteries, traveling and preaching as he went, all to further the ongoing reform of the Church. Many popes relied on his counsel and advice. He refused multiple opportunities to be named a Bishop. He was known in a special way for his love of Mary and for the writing of some of our most beautiful Marian prayers and theology, many believe even the Hail Holy Queen. His spiritual writings are stellar in their guidance to souls on the path to Heaven. He also preached for the 2 nd Crusade seeking to inspire the people who were going forth to liberate the Holy Land from occupation. The Crusade was not successful however. St. Bernard is called a Doctor of the Church. This is the highest title we can give our saints. The title means that his whole life can teach us how to follow Christ faithfully. So feel free to order an extra ice cream next Monday and perhaps steal away some time for an extra moment of prayer or to read something by the great St. Bernard! Fr. Mark Vander Steeg
August 11 & 12, 2018 PAGE 3 The 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you! (KINGS 19:7) Jesus knows that our stewardship journey will be difficult; we are not designed to do it on our own. Fortunately, Jesus gave us the greatest gift of all the gift of the Eucharist; His own body and blood. When we join our sacrifices with the sacrifice of the Mass, we find the strength and courage to be His joyful disciples.
