Holy Spirit Catholic Church August 26, 2018 From The Pastor s Desk If you want to learn how to be a good cook, you don t go down to the local fast food restaurant to learn how they make their food. No, you go to someone whose cooking you admire. You ask if you can spend some time with that person, watching them and asking questions about what they are doing. You may even become their apprentice. And so, it should be when people are thinking about marriage or even after they have been married. They need to find someone who will help them learn about how to work towards having a beautiful marriage. Today, through the Scriptures, we have been given a great gift. Our reading from Ephesians has pointed the way for married couples to be satisfied, happy, content, fulfilled in their marriage relationship. Here we are given the model for the marriage relationship. Husbands and wives are to love one another as Christ loves the Church. This means that if you want to know how to relate to each other in marriage, you should first of all take a detailed look at how Christ relates to the Church, to the people of God. Then you must apply that model of relationship to you own marriage. Let me give you some examples of what I mean. Christ forgave, sacrificed, suffered for, had compassion, taught, gave hope to, fed, challenged, and died for his followers and for us. These are but some of the ways in which Christ relates to the Church. This relationship of Christ to the Church is the model that married couples are asked to take for their own relationships. One of the ways that Christ relates to us is as teacher; living with someone who is different from you, and therefore, has something to teach you. This does not primarily have to do with information teaching your spouse how to cook or fix the washing machine although some of that can be very useful. But it may be in the area of life values or relationship skills or even about Christian values. Not everyone will put the same emphasis on the same values. A wife may have grown up in an environment where she learned how to easily forgive others, whereas husband may have found that to be an area of great difficulty. As the husband sees the wife practice this virtue of forgiveness in her relationships with others and with him, he has the chance himself to learn how to forgive. On the other hand, the husband may have learnt that one person can never really judge another. In his relationship, he is able to accept people without putting all kinds of judgement on them. He believes that only God can see the heart. His wife, after seeing her husband relate to the people in this way for many years, may also come to take on that same Gospel value of not judging others. Therefore, just as Christ taught his followers, husband and wives must teach and learn from each other. But always remember that this must be a mutual affair. When only one partner is constantly trying to change the other partner then there is something out of balance in that relationship. Jesus life had a certain quality of endurance through misunderstanding which finally proved victorious for him. In any marriage, one of the main problems is still the problem of communication. This daily task and opportunity is one that has to constantly be refined. It is not something that a married couple can do for a few years as they start off their marriage and then neglect it afterwards. Communication has to be constantly renewed. Jesus was often misunderstood as he tried to tell his disciples about the Good News that he came to bring. But he persevered in his efforts at communicating this Good News and was finally heard. Every married couple is called to practice this kind perseverance in their own attempts at communication. This will be the life blood of your marriage.
