PARISH NEWS THANK YOU JOSH Please stop in Bovard Hall NEXT Sunday, June 23, after the 11:30 Mass, to say good-bye to Josh, our Director of Youth Ministries. Josh & his family will be moving to Las Vegas where Josh grew up. Please stop in & say good-bye - coffee and donuts will be served. CENSUS UPDATE Thank you to everyone who has turned in their updated census forms. We are currently working on the families whose last name begins with H. If you received your census info in the mail, we would appreciate you taking a few minutes to update it with any changes - new email, phone numbers, family updates, etc. If you have any questions, please call the parish office at ext. 10. Thank you! LOWC Remember Liturgy of the Word for Children? It is still possible to offer this experience of the Word on Sunday morning if we have some volunteers. Consider this summertime as a new opportunity. LOWC needs you and your family to prepare the Sunday readings and proclaim them to the children. We offer training and resources and our prayer support. Call Barb Stokes to learn more. Older teens are also invited to Share God's Word in LOWC. OPPORTUNITY to SERVE SJN The Pastoral Council was formed at SJN three years ago. Unlike its predecessor, Parish Council, Pastoral Council is not an overseer of working committees or a decision-making body, but rather a listening and planning body that supports our pastor in leadership of our parish. The Pastoral Council has a need for a few parishioners to replace members who have needs to step down. In an attempt to have Pastoral Council be fully representative of the parish, it would be particularly befitting for parishioners from varied lifestages, e.g. younger singles, younger married and parents with elementary, middle and high school children, to become Pastoral Council members. Now is the time for you to consider becoming a member of the Pastoral Council. Please read the insert in today s bulletin and pray that God will inspire men and women to come forth to minister in our parish as members of the pastoral council. If you would like to submit your name or someone else you know who might be a good candidate for consideration or have questions, send to sjnpc@stjohnneumannpgh.org or complete the attached form on the insert and send to the parish office. The discernment and selection process will continue through September. More details will follow in the coming weeks. HAPPY FATHER S DAY Dear Father in Heaven, As a father, help me to follow Your example To be patient, To be caring, To be understanding, To be forgiving, To be firm, To be compassionate, To be a teacher, To be loving, To be a good listener, And most importantly, To be there as a parent As You are always there for me. Amen. CONGRATULATIONS RICK! Please stop in Bovard Hall after the 11:30 am Mass THIS Sunday, June 16, to congratulate Rick Caruso on his ordination of Deacon for the Diocese of Pittsburgh. MAYBE YOU WONDER... WHAT ARE THEY DOING? If you are reading this and wonder about this Catholic Church- why do we worship the way we do, how does this lead me to the Lord, what do we believe of scripture, how are we different than other faith denominations, or why can't I go to communion, etc etc etc. Consider this an invitation to come and see. Perhaps this is a nudge of the Spirit to come closer to the Lord. Perhaps you've been thinking about it or know someone who is or someone who waits to be invited...but don't know what to do next. The door is open to all. There are many ways to come - we need to meet you and share our stories and let you, your friend or family member discover more about this Catholic community. Please come on Wednesday, June 19 for a social hour from 7 to 8 pm for some refreshments and conversation. No pressure, no papers just come and see. You are welcome here at SJN. HOAGIES Plan your menu to include HOAGIES on Wednesday, June 19. Call the Rel Ed office to order an Italian, roast beef, turkey hoagie or pepperoni rolls (2/package) for $6 and have an easy lunch or dinner. WORLD YOUTH DAY On July 27, the young people of the Diocese of Pgh. will gather to celebrate World Youth Day. The Pope has called young people to Go and make disciples of all nations! Our desire is to gather all Young Adults in the Diocese for a local celebration of World Youth Day, with a special emphasis on reuniting young adults with the mission of the Church and encouraging discipleship. Tickets are available at www.lwydpgh.eventbrite.com. and are $15. Audience: Young adults 18-39. Doors open at 3:30.

COPING WITH LIFE ALONE Widowed, divorced or separated? Now that the worst has happened, how do you cope with the grief, loss and pain? How do you deal with the emptiness, loss of direction and fear of the future? No one has to suffer alone, and while life may never be the same, it can be good again...very good. Beginning Experience helps you deal with the grief and through God, turn the pain of loss into an experience of positive growth. The sessions have begun but you are most welcome to join us every Monday evening at 7 pm. They continue thru the end of June and start back up on July 8. SONWEST ROUND-UP VBS Monday thru Friday, June 17 21, 2013 This Monday our VBS begins at 9:30 am in Bovard Hall. Dismissal for the Age 4 thru Grade 4 participants is at 12:15 pm. The small group escorts will have rosters so parents/ guardians may sign for their children at dismissal. Junior Youth Week participants will end their day at 3:30 pm. We urge everyone to please be prompt. Thank you. Bible School Needs We still need a few more horses specifically children s spring mounted hobby horses, rocking horses and/or stick horses. We won t be able to have a round-up without horses. If any families are willing to loan us their horse(s) for the week of Vacation Bible School, please contact Andrew James @ 412-366-5885 x11 or ajames@stjohnneumannpgh.org. We promise to take good care of them. Thanks. VBS Craft Needs Our craft center is in need of fresh supplies -- assorted buttons (shankless), scraps of fabric and yarn. Donations may be placed in the collection box in the Education Building hallway. Thank you for your help. NEW PARISHIONERS We welcome these new parishioners, who have joined our parish in April & May: Joe & Jessica Balestrino Dan & Lisa Helt Michael & Shannon Benna Stephanie Jacobs Dante & Christy Calderone Chris & Holly Kikel Christopher Cieply Deanna Machi Ross & Anne Ficarri Alan Pershing Leigh Giovengo Charles & Kristen Schrauder Joseph & Melissa Truesdell ARE YOU NEW TO THE NORTH HILLS? If you have just moved into the area - Welcome! We re glad you came to worship with us. If you are interested in joining our parish, you can register on-line or call the parish office (412-366-2020, ext. 10) for a short form to complete. We ll be happy to help answer any questions you may have. EDUCATION Baptism Prep Blessings to your family if you are awaiting the birth of a child or recently welcomed new life into your home. Please plan to share the wonder of God's family life with them through the sacrament of Baptism. We invite you to a time of reflection and information to prepare for this awesome sacrament. Register through the Rel Ed office and come on Sunday, June 23 from 10:30 till noon. Something for the Children Take a look at the new little booklet just for the kids. LIVING FAITH is a great little reflection guide for children with wise words and activities for each day. Make it part of your summer prayer life. Find them on the lobby bookshelf and leave a donation if you can. First Sacraments... Reconciliation and Eucharist 2014 Maybe we missed a couple people who are not registered in our Religious Ed program so we remind you that preparation for these important sacraments begins formally with grade one BUT really begins with baptism and all the ways you encourage a life of faith in your home. If we missed you at one of our meetings and your child is seven or will be by spring 2014 and you feel they are ready to prepare for these sacraments, please call Barb Stokes to schedule an information meeting so we can help your family in this faith journey. Confirmation Thanks to all who helped our Confirmation Candidates in May as they began their formal study of the sacrament with Mass and reflection. Now they begin service retreats that include work at Light of Life Mission. Please keep them in your prayers. Our Spirit book next to the Bible holds their covenant page and we encourage all parishioners to take a look at it. Choose one or more of our candidates to pray for this summer. Marriage prep Next session at SJN is Saturday, Sept 28. Lots to do to prepare for a wedding. Make this preparation day part of your plans too. Call Rel Ed office at extension 12 to register. Scripture Study The door is open for a morning Bible study every Thursday from 10 till 11:30. Maybe this is your time to reflect on the Sunday scriptures and to share your insights. Consider the invitation this summer. No previous scripture study is required and there is no homework. All we ask is an open heart and your presence to the Word.

SPECIAL MESSAGE FOR PARENTS OF PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN Did you know that many families travel weekly from parishes near and far to bring their 3-6 year old children to St. John Neumann s Good Shepherd program? These parents have observed their children s serenity and joy when their vital need to live in relationship with God is met. They also notice their children are more attentive at Mass because what we do in the Good Shepherd atrium is preparation for a full life in the Church. What about the children of SJN, many of whom do not participate? This three-year-long period of enjoying the Good Shepherd s love is the foundation and beginning of preparation for First Communion that continues in first grade. That love roots deeply in the child and promotes a flowering of faith and virtue as the child grows and matures. Come and see what we are offering your child at a one-hour informational meeting for adults on Thursday, June 27 or Wednesday, July 17 at 7 pm. Registration materials will be available both evenings; you may also register anytime on the SJN website. LEVEL I COURSE RE-SCHEDULED Our intensive Level I course, scheduled for the weeks of June 10 and 17, seems to have been too intense for most people as summer activities get underway. We have rescheduled for Fridays starting in September, and already have sign-ups! Barbara Stokes and Barbara Matera will lead this course from 9 am 3 pm every Friday from September 6 November 22. Brochures are in the church lobby. Call Barbara Matera for more info. SAVE THE DATE: PARENTS OF CHILDREN 18 MONTHS 3 YEARS OLD We are planning an evening of presentations especially for you on Wednesday, July 31 from 7 8:30 pm. A pediatrician and a Montessori teacher will be on hand to address your child s abilities and needs at this age. Fr. Al and religious educators will share ideas on what you can do at home to nurture your child s relationship with God. Babysitting will be available, so it is important that you RSVP to let us know you will be here and how many children you will be bringing. Call 412-366-5885 Ext. 12. MISC. SOLOS...will meet on Tuesday, June 18 at Carmody s Restaurant at 6 pm. Please call Bob Lupi at 412-364-4921 if you plan to attend. THANK YOU...for your generosity of $6,523 toward the second collection for the tornado victims of Oklahoma. With no prior announcement being made about this collection except for that day, your response was tremendous! Thank you again for your faith in action.
