THE ANNUNCIATION VOLUME XXXIV No. 1 January 2018 Saint Mary s Church 337 Charlotte Street Asheville, North Carolina 28801 828-254-5836

THE ANNUNCIATION - January 2018 - St. Mary s Episcopal Church, Asheville, NC Merry Christmas! FROM THE RECTOR Father Brent Norris Twelfth Night Revels Merry Christmas Our celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord continues. While the Christmas season is short, only twelve days, those twelve days should be full of joy and celebration. By ancient tradition the last night of Christmas (Twelfth Night) is celebrated in an intentional way. Twelfth Night Boar s Head dinners and Madrigal concerts were once very popular and in some places still are. At St. Mary s we will keep the tradition of Twelfth Night with an evening of music, dancing, and laughter. The event will begin at 7:00 pm on Friday, January 5 th. The Church will provide hot mulled cider. Bring your Christmas cookies and join the fun. Our entertainment will include an exhibition of traditional English Morris dancing by a local dance group, musical pieces shared by members of our community and perhaps even a couple of surprises. If you need musical accompaniment please contact our Music Director, Joel Rogers. I look forward to seeing you at our Twelfth Night Revels. Until then, Merry Christmas. ADULT FORUM Since 2000 the Episcopal Church has been in full communion with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in American. Since 2011 the Episcopal Church has also been in full communion with the Moravian Church. There are currently proposals before both the Episcopal Church and the United Methodist Church to enter into a similar covenant, whereby each Church recognizes the ministry and sacraments of the other as truly valid and interchangeable. Unlike the previous two agreements the one with the Methodists presents some different challenges for both sides. During January and early February the Adult Forum will look at the details of our already existing full communion agreements and the proposed agreement with the United Methodist Church and see how those agreements have already and might in the future shape the ministries of all the branches of the Church.

CUBA UPDATE Fr. Norris and Sr. Warden, Trisha Crenshaw, made the annual visit to our companion congregation in Limonar, Cuba in late November and early December. They delivered books and medical supplies graciously contributed by members of St. Mary s as well as our annual $10,000 contribution toward the rebuilding of their structure. Members of San Felipe gathered one afternoon to welcome the visitors and gave them a tour of the work so far. At this point construction on the house renovations has stopped. Due to Hurricane Maria all building materials have been diverted to cities that suffered high levels of destruction. It is thought that this will be another six months before building can resume. Exterior of house being renovated for worship Trisha Crenshaw, Jim Geenan (Waynesville), Clara Luz (San Felipe lay leader) examining inside construction progress. INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURE As we move through the winter season the likelihood of snow and/or ice becomes greater. If there is a question about whether or not services have been cancelled at St. Mary s, simply call the church office number (254-5836). The message on the answering machine will tell you what you need to know. You may also check our facebook page at St. Mary s Episcopal Church Asheville, NC or the closing notices on WLOS. The decision about cancelling the 8:00 am service will be made by 7:00 am. The decision about cancelling Sunday school and the 11:00 am service will be made by 9:00 am. Decisions about daily services will be made by 3:30 pm. The condition of roads can vary a great deal from one part of Asheville to another, not to mention our outlying towns. When in doubt opt for safety. Take out your BCP, read the service and scriptures appointed for the day, and make a spiritual communion in your heart.

EPISCOPAL HOUSE XII IS LOOKING GREAT! The Episcopal House is looking more and more like the home it will soon become for the McCarson family. This photograph was taken one week ago, on December 5th. Amara's closing is scheduled for February 1. On that happy day, Episcopal House XII will officially become the McCarson family home. Amara and her children can hardly wait!. All of us at Habitat wish all of you the merriest and happiest of holidays. Betsy Warren Development Officer, Donor Relations MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY - SUNDAY MORNING VAN DRIVER St. Mary s would like to start offering a Sunday morning van service that would pick up people who do not drive and bring them to the late service. If you are interested in being a driver please contact the Rector for more details. NOTICE +++ The deadline to submit articles for the February newsletter will be January 20 +++ MINISTRY FAIR FOLLOW-UPS At the ministry fair in October there were lists of sign up sheets for new ministries. As the new year begins you can expect for there be some follow up on those.
