Church Profile F I R S T B A P T I S T C H U R C H O F H E W I T T, T E X A S CHURCH HISTORY, STAFF, MEMBERSHIP AND GENERAL INFORMATION History First Baptist Church Hewitt was organized in November 1894 and became a member of the Waco Baptist Association on September 21, 1895. The lots for the church building, located at Graham and First Street (our current location) were given to FBC Hewitt by John A. Warren. The original church building, consisting of only one large room was completed on December 20, 1895. It was dedicated on June 7, 1896, led by Rev. George W. Truett. For over 120 years, FBC Hewitt has served as a beacon for the Gospel for the Hewitt community and has mission efforts that have reached across the globe. Through the years, additional buildings were added to the campus as the church grew from a small church in a rural community to the mid-sized church that it is today in a growing suburb of Waco. Rev. Roy Marshall served as Senior Pastor of FBC Hewitt from February 1976 to December 2015. The Sunday morning worship attendance of FBC Hewitt swelled to 750 in the year 2000 and began to decline in 2004. The church averaged between 225-250 on Sunday mornings during calendar year 2016. FBC Hewitt has been involved in planting other churches in the Greater Waco Area. Of note is Crossroads Baptist Church, which is now a self-sustaining rural church located between Hewitt and Lorena. More recently FBC Hewitt deeded land to Christ the King Vietnamese Baptist Church (CTKVBC). The churches are located on adjoining property. CTKVBC utilized space at FBC Hewitt beginning in 2011, until such time they were able save enough money to build their own worship center. CTKVBC completed their worship center in 2016. The relationship between the two churches remains strong, as FBC Hewitt continues to provide support to both children s and youth ministries of CTKVBC. Church budget for 2016 was $858,290. Buildings/Property The church sits on several acres and the campus is divided by First Street. The property to the east of First Street is largely undeveloped except for two large parking areas, and the storage building is located on the east side of the campus. The bus barn is located on the west side of the campus. The property that FBC Hewitt deeded to the Vietnamese congregation (A) is also on this side of First Street. The west side of First Street is where the buildings occupied by the membership and staff of FBC Hewitt are located. The campus of FBC Hewitt is comprised of five buildings with the oldest being the previous sanctuary building (1). This building is now utilized primarily for adult education along with a small prayer chapel for the congregation. This building is connected to the current worship center that was built in 1989 (2). The worship center is capable of seating up to 800 people and comprises approximately 12,000 SF. This addition to the campus also includes a choir loft, a choir rehearsal room, two rooms set aside for storage, a bride s room, and a couple of rooms that are large enough to house a couple of small Sunday School Classrooms. One of the sanctuary s more noticeable features is the steeply sloping floor extending front to back. A baptismal is located behind and above the choir at the front of the church. Large faceted glass windows flank both sides of the worship space. The foyer was recently updated with new flooring, lighting and paint. Adjacent to the worship center are the children s buildings. Page 2 12/30/2016 301 S. First St.; Hewitt, TX 76643

5 1 3,4 2 A The closest building to the worship center was recently renovated; and is used primarily for cradle roll and pre-school children (3). This building is approximately 5,500 SF. Adjoining this building is the children s building. This building is two stories with approximately 4,200 SF on each floor (4). The first floor originally held the fellowship hall and kitchen for the church. This space can be subdivided into three classrooms utilizing accordion partitions. The single-story building appears to be of 1960 s or 1970 s vintage, the two-story structure dates to the late 1970 s to early 1980 s. The newest building on the campus is the Family Life Center (AKA The Hub) (5). This building was constructed in the late 1990 s and is home to the church offices, several fixed classroom spaces, kitchen, student center, fellowship area and worship area for the Resonate Service. This building is approximately 12,000 SF in size. OVERVIEW OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY Community Demographics See appendix A for information pertaining to demographics of residents within a three-mile radius of the church. Living in Hewitt The information provided below was obtained from the Hewitt Chamber of Commerce. Hewitt is situated just south of Waco where residents enjoy affordable, safe neighborhoods with a small town feeling and positive community spirit. Hewitt s proximity to Waco allows the dining, entertainment, education, 301 S. First St.; Hewitt, TX 76643 12/30/2016 Page 3

recreation, employment and other amenities of a larger city with the slower pace of a suburban lifestyle. The greater Waco area is situated midway between Dallas and Austin on IH-35. With a reasonable cost of living, solid infrastructure and award-winning public services, it s no wonder more people are calling Hewitt home. The median Hewitt home price is $149,000 while houses range from $138,000 to $290,000. Hewitt housing types include single family, residential and commercial. Hewitt is minutes away from Downtown Waco and is one of the most sought after locations for both commercial and residential use. New neighborhoods appeal to a diversity of income groups with communities ranging from new homes starting from the $140,000s to master-planned luxury lifestyle neighborhoods surrounded by beautiful trees and rolling hills. In 2015, Hewitt was also recognized by Money magazine as the 20th Best Place to Live in the Nation, which reflects the vibrant, active and caring community that is Hewitt. Hewitt By the Numbers #1 Most Affordable Place to Live in the Nation per Money Magazine #2 Best Place to Get an Affordable Home in the Nation per Money Magazine #2 Best Place to Live in Texas per Money Magazine #7 Best Place to Live in Texas per Movoto #9 Safest City in Texas per SafeWise #20 Best Place to Live in the Nation per Money Magazine Local Activities and Attractions Thanks to the popularity of HGTV s Fixer Upper, folks are seeing more and more of what the Waco area offers both residents and visitors. Greater Hewitt and Waco are home to a variety of museums, galleries, theatres, venues and attractions. Sports fans can catch a game at Baylor University s McLane Stadium and check out the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, while history buffs will appreciate Baylor University s Mayborn Museum Complex, the Waco Mammoth Site, the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame and Museum and the Dr. Pepper Museum. For live music and theater, there are many shows throughout the year hosted by the Waco Civic Theater, McLennan Community College and Baylor Drama Department, as well as the Waco Symphony Orchestra, Baylor School of Music, Extraco Events Center and Waco Hall. Built in 1914, the historic Hippodrome Theater located in downtown Waco has also recently been renovated and now features movies, concerts and theater acts, as well as full service in-theater dining. On beautiful days with crystal-clear Texas skies, people gravitate toward the outdoors, including Hewitt Park and Warren Park. Hewitt Park, at 801 S. Hewitt Drive, is situated on Castleman Creek in Hewitt and has a picnic area, ball diamond, soccer/football field, two covered shelters, a 0.5-mile walking track and a covered pavilion. The Adventure Playground provides a safe and fun place for all children to climb and play, while children and adults alike can enjoy the Disc Golf Course. Offering 18 holes of fun for casual players or competitive enthusiasts, the course was made possible by sponsors who are recognized on each hole. The Hewitt course is designed for PDGA rules of play. Page 4 12/30/2016 301 S. First St.; Hewitt, TX 76643

Warren Park, located just off Old Temple Road, is also nestled on the banks of Castleman Creek, and was named after Homer Warren, a long-time resident and community leader of Hewitt. Warren Park has picnic areas, a ball diamond, a soccer field, playgrounds, a covered pavilion and the brand-new Creekside Amphitheater, which will host several community events in 2016, including a summer concert series. Other outside activities, including fishing, boating, water sports, biking and hiking, are available throughout the year at Lake Waco, the largest urban lake in Texas, and Cameron Park. Both are only minutes from Hewitt and offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike. The Hewitt Public Library (HPL) has a new home at 200 Patriot Court, and it is quite impressive. Visitors will be amazed at the new state-of-the-art facility from its clean and modern architecture, to the colorful stained glass and décor, to the new Pet Zone. The Library will also feature a coffee bar, museum space and an outdoor butterfly garden, with consideration of a proposed 3-D printer to go in the Teen Zone, along with video-editing and audio equipment. CHURCH LIFE Values The Holy Bible is the inspired Word of God and is the basis for any statement of faith. The church ascribes to the doctrinal statement of The Baptist Faith and Message as adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention of 2000. Worship FBC Hewitt started two simultaneous worship services on Sunday mornings in January 2017. The Classic (Traditional) service is held in the Worship Center, and the Resonate (Contemporary) service is held in The Hub. The message is delivered live in the Worship Center and video streamed to The Hub. Our goal in establishing the two worship services is to introduce an innovative way to reach the unchurched and disengaged in our community. Children s Church is held during the adult worship time for children in K-3 rd grade.
