3PK December 13-14, 2014 Luke 1-2 (Waiting for the King book) First 10 minutes of the service hour: Engage kids in cooperative play activities to help them connect to other kids Next 5 minutes: Connect Time Next 25 minutes: Large Group Christmas The long-awaited king arrived! Keep in mind, kids might not be perfectly engaged during small group. Do your best to engage every kid, but don t let redirecting take the place of reviewing the story. You may be surprised at what they pick up even if they appear to be disengaged! Last 25 minutes: Snack and Small Group Finish early? Repeat the activity! Kids this age learn through repetition. Or, check out the end of the activities section to find an idea for this week. As kids leave, remind them to act out their favorite part of today s story about the King! Today we are reading Waiting for the King with some added interactive elements. It s a kid version of the Awaited show, told from the perspective of the angels!

GOAL: Connect time is all about engaging kids in a short, interactive game to prepare them for Large Group. o Clean up! (10 minutes after the service start time, when you get the 5- minute warning from the presenter) o Line Up o While in line, tell the kids that we re going to read a VERY good story in large group. Then start to tell them what s in it: There s going to be a special baby born (pretend to rock a baby). Angels announced that he was coming! (pretend to play a trumpet and say duh-duh-duh-duh ) When he is born, people are going to JUMP for joy (jump)! Shepherds will RUN to worship him (run in place). Wise men will bow and bring him gifts (bow and pretend to place a gift down). The baby s name is can anybody guess? (Let kids say: Jesus!) Then YELL his name, whisper his name, say his name facing backwards, say his name while spinning around, lip-sync his name, etc. Before you go in, remember we have to be (Shhh!) quiet in Large Group. Whisper the name of Jesus a few times. Then tip-toe in together!

Goal: Kids will (1) understand that people waited for the king (Jesus) and (2) rejoice that the king has come! Why? The coming of the king is exciting! God s Rescuer changed everything. Tip: Today has a lot of fun play-acting! Decide what s best for your group: either give kids a snack first so you can focus on acting or act first, eat a snack, then play the Extra Time activity. It doesn t matter which order you choose, but make a plan ahead of time! REVIEW THE STORY 1. Who were the people waiting for? (The king; Jesus!) 2. Who told Mary, Jesus is coming! (The angel.) 3. What did Mary and Joseph do before Jesus was born? (Kids may mention Joseph s dream; went on a long journey to Bethlehem.) 4. Where was baby Jesus born? (Outside with the animals.) 5. Who appeared in the sky to tell the shepherds that Jesus was born? (More angels!) 6. What did the shepherds do when the heard the king had come? (Rejoiced! Jumped for joy! Ran to see Jesus and tell everybody the good news.) ACTIVITY: ACT IT OUT Lead them in acting out today s story. At this age, they love dramatic play and it helps them remember what happened. Use the music and dancing at the end to help you tell the story! Here are a couple of ideas: 1. Wait and wait and wait...then turn on some music and dance to celebrate that Jesus is here! 2. Pretend to be Mary and Joseph. Take a long journey, then stop and pretend you re in a loud, stinky place. Then dance and celebrate that Jesus is here! 3. Have half the room be shepherds, and half angels. The angels can yell, Glory to God! Then the shepherds who just got the good news can run in place to worship Jesus. Then everybody can dance and celebrate that Jesus is here! *Pray with kids, thanking God that the King is here! (Continue on the following page)

2 After acting out the story, kids can work on the coloring page until parents arrive. Extra time? Have an animal party Nativity-style! Make a circle. Choose one person to be the leader (be the leader first to show kids how it s done). The leader names an animal that might have been at the place Jesus was born and then everybody imitates that animal! Be as loud and crazy as you want. Do sounds, movements, or both! Imagine what that animal might have been thinking had it been around as Jesus was born or when shepherds arrived, dancing and excited.

1 This week we re reading Waiting for the King, a kid-friendly, storybook version of the Awaited show! Feel free to add your own motions or phrases to repeat in today s story. The more you can interact with kids, the better! * Click to play intro music Presenter: Hi Friends! Welcome to Kid s Club. I'm and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend HOPS. She s going to remind us of the kind of choices we can make today. Video: HOPS 4 Share With Others (about 1 minute) Wow, I can t wait to have some fun in Kids Club today. Before we hear our story, can I see a big thumbs up from everybody who s ready to have some fun? (Let kids respond.) Great job! Now I think we re ready to hear God s story. REVIEW Does anybody know the name of this book? (Hold up the Bible for kids to see.) That s right, it s the Bible! This is where we can read about God s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this story is the most important. It s God s Rescue plan. Remember how God made the whole world (bring your hands in a circular motion above your head) and everything was good? The world was perfect! Give me a smile! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone.) But THEN, something bad happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and sadness and death came into the world Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond.) This was really sad. But even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God God loved them anyway! And he planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve and you and me can be close to God again. We ve been talking about that KING and Rescuer. His name is.(let kids say: Jesus!) Yes, Jesus!

CHRISTMAS BACKGROUND Remember, the people had to wait and wait and wait for the Rescuer. But finally, he came! Today, we re going to hear his story. But I m going to need your help. Can you guys help me? (Let kids say: YES!) Every time you hear me say the word angel, I need you guys to say duhduh-duh-duh and pretend you have a trumpet. Let s practice: duh-duh-duh-duh! Wow, great job! See, angels are God s messenger warriors. They announced some very important things in this story. And we re going to make our duh-duh-duh-duh noise to make sure that we hear their announcements! Everybody ready?? *(The following is nearly quoted text from Waiting For the King. Italicized portions are additions/changes; (parts in parentheses are ways to make it interactive); the word angel is underlined to help you remember to engage kids. You can hide your script in the book if you want, but please don t just read out of the book as the script is purposefully geared toward a large group of listeners. Each new image has a brief description to help you keep track.) Begin on page 3, image (drummer boy): Many years ago, during a dark and scary time, in the far off nation of Israel, people were waiting for the king that God had promised. Angels watched as these people waited for their coming king. Next image (sad crowds): The people waited and waited. They became impatient and began to cry, Where is our king that God promised? When will he come and rescue us? (Pretend to cry and ask kids to pretend too.) They waited and waited. (pause) And then God gave angels a message to deliver. Next image (Mary): One angel was sent to the city of Nazareth to give God s message to a young woman named Mary. (say straight into your mic): Jesus is coming! (Ask kids to say Jesus is coming! as loud as they can.) God chose Mary to be Jesus mom. Mary was scared, but she believed the miracle would happen, and she celebrated. Next image (Joseph): Joseph, the man she was going to marry, did not believe that a miracle had happened. Mary was pregnant, but the child was not Joseph s son. It was God s son! So Joseph planned not to marry her. (Ask kids to cross their arms and say: No!) Next image (Mary and Joseph): BUT God sent an angel to Joseph with a message. Joseph was a good man, and finally believed that God was doing a miracle. So Mary and Joseph got married. Next image (journey to Bethlehem): When Mary was about to give birth, they had to travel back to Joseph s hometown of Bethlehem to be counted by the government. (Have kids stand and walk in place with you as you narrate the following image.) Next image (in line at Bethlehem): They traveled a long and dangerous way through rugged lands? Whew! It was so tiring! But finally they arrived. Let s all have a seat, too. (Motion for kids

to sit.) The little town of Bethlehem is where the most important king would be born. Next image (stable): But in the crowded town, Joseph had trouble finding a place for them to stay. Say, Oh no! (Let kids repeat.) Next image (manger): (no actual text on this page) The greatest king was going to be born in the lowest place, an old barn full of smelly animals and hay. (Plug your nose and narrate the following image.) He slept in their feeding dish! (There is no actual text on this page.) Next image (Mary/Joseph/Jesus; SKIPS a page): Little, tiny baby Jesus was the most unexpected answer to God s promise. But, God chose to send his only son, Jesus, to show how much he loves us. Give yourself a hug if God loves you! (Make sure all kids feel invited to respond.) Next image (shepherds dancing): When Jesus was born, angels told shepherds in the fields nearby about the king of the world. They began to worship and sing and dance. (Last part of text on this page has been omitted.) Can you guys dance in your seat? (Let kids do a little dance move.) Next image (shepherds again/second part of 2-page spread): They shepherds were so EXCITED that they left their fields and RAN to see baby Jesus. Can you guys run in place from your seat? (Run in place from seat.) SKIP pages about the wise men Next 2 images on one slide (Jesus in the manger with people crowded around): Everybody worshiped Jesus! They loved him SO much! (No text in book.) The story of God s loving rescue began that day. Next image (people dancing): Everyone was happy and rejoiced! The long awaited king had come! Every year, we celebrate the birth of this King at Christmas! Let s stand up and dance and rejoice to celebrate Jesus birthday! Song: Trust in the Lord Song: King of the Jungle Dismiss kids to small groups. (Be creative as you dismiss them. Ask them to come give you a high five, or maybe tiptoe or hop--like Hops--to their groups.)
