Pastor s Notes CHRISTMAS BAKE SALE TO BENEFIT SERVERS Every year at this time, Holy Martyrs hosts our popular Christmas Bake Sale. It s a chance for parishioners who bake to donate delicious baked goods to benefit our church. New bakers and those who aren t able to help in other ways are welcome to join our veteran bakers who prepare festive cookies, candy and cakes. The beautifully decorated goodies are greatly appreciated by those who purchase them and they benefit a most worthy cause. The proceeds from our Bake Sale are used to purchase altar linens and other items we use at Mass. This year, our Bake Sale will benefit our parish Altar Servers, the students and teens who serve at our weekend liturgies whose dedication and prayerfulness are appreciated by us all. The servers robes they wear are in great need of replacements. The money raised through our bake sales this year will go toward the purchase of new servers robes. The white Alb and belt that servers wear is based on the Baptismal garment for adults and is similar to what priests and deacons wear with their liturgical vestments. It signifies our dignity as baptized Christians and the role of service that underlies the Christian life. It is the distinctive garb worn by leaders of prayer. This is an opportunity for everyone who bakes to bring something special, to support a great cause, and for our parish to show its appreciation for our fantastic Altar Servers! We hope you ll help. Seniors Corner Inviting all Seniors to join us for our upcoming events: Monday, 12/7 - Christmas Luncheon at Williams on the Lake. Christ the King Parish School of Religion Teen Girls and Spirituality Pre-teen and teenage girls are often described as helplessly emotional drama queens, and this is especially evidenced during that special time of the month. Research, however, which includes MRI and EEG brain scans, concludes that, along with menses comes an incredible augmented capacity for spirituality! Science recognizes a unified path of both spiritual and sexual development. Drawing from a large sample study of nearly 4,000 girls, it was found that the onset of physically becoming a woman was associated with a heightened sense of a personal God, and the two together showed a significant degree of protection against depression. With the arrival of puberty, emotions run high with an extraordinary increase in perceptiveness, openness to new experiences, and sensitivity. This means, that with the arrival of menstruation, the full range of a young woman s emotions appears bright and strong, and tears are part of this arrival. So, instead of saying, Get a grip, or It s not the end of the world, we, as parents, should take a page from ancient traditions which have built into female puberty ceremonies the interwoven expressions of fertility and expanded spirituality. While not mistaking high raging emotions with emotional depth, we, as parents should consider this emotionality as part of an extraordinary increase in perception, including the spiritual capacity to know God. A response which honors this could be, Because you can feel so intensely, you have the gift of a great heart, and the sensitivity to pick up on what is going on which is quite a paradigm shift for most parents! Typically, what ensues is a lively conversation and questions that range from goldfish to God. The important element here is not that we have all of the answers for our children, but that we can dialogue with our teens. They love the big questions. They are eager to challenge entrenched assumptions, explore, experience, and express! The French Jesuit priest, philosopher Tielhard de Chardin said it best when he wrote, the difficulty lies not in solving problems, but expressing them. When we allow this process to happen, we open the door for amazing spiritual awakenings and experiences for our young daughters. Miller, Lisa, Ph. D. The Spiritual Child. Holy Martyrs Church November 22, 2015 Medina, Ohio Christ the King Sunday Today is the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, also known as the Feast of Christ the King. This marks the last Sunday of the Church year. Pope Pius XI established the feast day in 1925 as a way for us to remember to worship and celebrate Christ as Lord and King over all creation. Christ Jesus, I acknowledge You as King of the universe. All that has been created has been made for You. Make full use of Your rights over me. I renew the promises I made in Baptism, when I renounced Satan and all his pomps and works, and I promise to live a good Christian life and to do all in my power to procure the triumph of the rights of God and Your Church. There will NOT be Life Teen next Sunday, November 29th due to the Thanksgiving holiday. The next Life Night will be on December 6th. Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer you my efforts in order to obtain that all hearts may acknowledge your Sacred Royalty, and that thus the Kingdom of Your peace may be established throughout the universe. Amen. lifeteen@holymartyrs.net spirit@holymartyrs.net CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR YOUTH The following students received scholastic honors: Archbishop Hoban High School Nicholas Bayda Georgia Nagucki Next week, there will be a Communal Penance service on Monday, November 30th at 7:00 p.m. for all PSR and SPIRIT students.
