(Before meals, before an adventure or other times as a reminder of who they are and what they represent). Leader s first questions/discussion. Outdoor Training LEADING INTO YOUR OUTDOORS SKILLS TRAINING Outdoor Gear: Wow, so much gear, so little time. Everything from a pocket knife or a skinning knife, a compass to a backpack, so much stuff. Outdoorsmen need good gear, the right gear to be successful in the outdoors. What are some of the most important tools you should have if you venture outdoors? What about tools a guy may use during the year, a mower, chain saw or snowplow. This can be an inside job. Preparation for the coming year. Gun cleaning, knife sharpening, bow maintenance. Take all batteries out of tools when in storage. Teach how to dismantle a firearm. Check ropes, carabiners, straps, remove old fishing line, oil reels, fix eyelets and tips on rods. Sew tears in gear (no really, teach them how to thread a needle and sow something together). Talk about : A flashlight is a great piece of gear anytime. Materials Copyright 2018 - kidsoudoorzone.com - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512-292-1113 1
A knife can be another foundational tool for your outdoor backpack. A backpack. You might have a couple of these. One for climbing mountains and one for hunting. Day packs and week-long backpacking trips. Your firearms are gear. Knowing how they work, how to keep them clean is important. Your bow, bow string, arrows have to be in good shape. Even your boots or coat are gear that has to be the right thing for the right adventure. What about a chainsaw being used at the farm or ranch? A snowmobile used to get to the hunting cabin? Scripture for this month: LEADING INTO YOUR HEART TRAINING This Month's Scripture: Ezekiel 12:1-2, Again a message came to me from the Lord: Son of man, you live among rebels who have eyes but refuse to see. They have ears but refuse to hear. For they are a rebellious people. So now, son of man, pretend you are being sent into exile. Pack the few items an exile could carry, and leave your home to go somewhere else. Do this right in front of the people so they can see you. For perhaps they will pay attention to this, even though they are such rebels. Leader s first questions/discussion, Bible training: Ezekiel was an Old Testament prophet which was a lot like a preacher. It was his job to tell God s people what God wanted to tell them. Sometimes God s message is not what they wanted to hear. Ezekiel s message was we are gonna have to pack our bags and move away from our homes and into a strange land. This was a really hard message to deliver by Ezekiel to God s people who did not want to move. But Ezekiel was a man Dangerous for Good and did what God wanted him to do. He was brave and overcame his fear and did what God wanted him to do. Have you ever had to move when you did not want to? What was so hard about it? What is something you have to do you don t like to do? Homework, take out the trash, make your bed? If you had to move what would you pack in your bag to take with you? What do you pack in your back pack to go on a KOZ hunt? NOTE: Let them talk leave time between when you say something and they can speak let it be silent for a while if you have to they grow close in times of quiet allow Him to come Materials Copyright 2018 - kidsoudoorzone.com - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512-292-1113 2
STOP & BEGIN OUTDOOR SKILLS TRAINING BEGIN OUTDOOR SKILLS TRAINING: IDEA TRAIL Things to do this month: Taking care of gear is a huge task. Every boy needs to understand how to use a wrench, a hammer, a saw, a screwdriver and other tools and manual tasks. These lessons will follow him for his lifetime, they (you) are important to him. The KOZ Pinterest Idea Page: https://www.pinterest.com/kidsoutdoorzone/pins/ Possible stations: This is a great month to break down firearms and clean them Show them how to fill a gas stove or lanterns, change mantels Be intentional about your Teach the boys how to rust proof, oil, wipe down their gear time with the boys. Ask before storage them how they are, how Remove batteries for gear storage This is a good month for teaching knots. Create several knot their family is, how stations school is going Then Set up a gun cleaning station Listen! Set up a fishing reel and rod repair stations Have them sow something. This is actually a very important skill they can learn Have the boys tear down a snow plow or snow mobile, change oil Sharpen a chain saw blade, change plug, oil Lawn mower blade replace, oil change, spark plug replacement *Note always add an EXTREME element to your KOZ day. Be creative. FIELD NOTES: Other places for good information and literature. Here are some sites where we have found great content of this lesson plan. The internet always has resources but be careful there are some bad sites with poor information. We do not endorse nor are we associated with any of the sites listed below. The information there may change as well. IMPORTANT: Use the opening/use the close, prayer/ sit spots and prayer cards. All groups should use the foundational structure of KOZ each month. The starting, the prayer, sit spots etc. as a common element to every meeting. Everything from sledding to swimming, hiking to fly fishing. The key to going off the trail is to keep the structure in place. Get them outside move their bodies, adventure and exploration. Keep it exciting, keep it real, be intentional about bringing them into a relationship with Christ. OUTDOOR TRAINING CONCLUSIONS Ask pointed questions on the outdoor skills they learned today. Drive home a point What was your favorite part of KOZ today? Basic knowledge of the skills is essential. What are some different ways to sharpens a knife, clean a reel, replace a lawnmower blade, sew a backpack etc. Why do you take the batteries or gas from a flashlight or mower before you put it in storage? Why oil down a gun? SCRIPTURE TRAINING AND HEART TAKEAWAY EACH MONTH: Reminder to leader: Our theme for 2018 is Dangerous for Good. Remind the boys before each month s Bible story of our theme. Each month we will look a real Bible character that will live out this theme. Challenge our boys each month to also be like these great men of God and be Dangerous for Good. This Month's Scripture: Ezekiel 12:1-2, Again a message came to me from the Lord: Son of man, you live among rebels who have eyes but refuse to see. They have ears but refuse to hear. and leave your home to go somewhere else. Do this right in front of the people so they can see you. For perhaps they will pay attention to this, even though they are such rebels. Trail Map #1 Are you ready to go? Is your gear ready? When a friend asks you to go hunting or hiking it is really awesome to have a backpack ready to go with all the stuff you need. When you go fishing, it is really helpful to have fresh line and a cleaned and well maintained reel. When you go on a vacation or a long trip, what do you do to get ready? Having your gear ready is really important as an outdoorsman. Having your heart ready is really important as a believer. Ezekiel found himself in a tough spot. Israel was rebelling against God and living in sin. The Lord tells Ezekiel to get up and leave. Not only that, leave like you are in a hurry with just a few things that an exile would carry. God didn t even tell him where he was going, but just go. Ezekiel was a man of God and he was ready to do what God told him to do. He was ready and obedient. There are times that we ll find ourselves around people that might have the same posture as the Israelites, rebellious and refusing to see and hear the truth. You may need to get up and leave. If you are with friends that don t know Christ, God may prompt you to be ready to share your faith with them. Are you ready to do that? Can you tell the story of your salvation? Could you tell someone else how to accept Christ as their Savior? Being ready with your hunting and fishing gear is important to be able to go hunting and fishing. Being able to tell your story about Christ is important to being ready to be obedient to Christ. NOTE: This is a great place for one of the leaders to share their testimony and demonstrate that readiness to share the gospel and tell their story of salvation. You may even have a boy willing to do that. Train Map #2 Are you a waiter? No, not the one who asks for your order at the restaurant but the kind of guy who waits till the last minute. You don t prepare yourself for things to come. You know something is coming up, homework, a family trip, KOZ, the garbage man and you are supposed to take the cans down to the curb. How do your parents and teachers act when you are prepared and when you are not. One of the hardest things to do for a lot of people is to be ready for when hard things happen. When you spend time with good friends, at church, with your KOZ fiends and leaders you learn to be ready for life s changes. When hard things happen you know you have good friends, the bible and God to help you through them. You are prepared. Drive home a point Would you leave a group of friends if they were getting in trouble or about to do something you know you should not be a part of? It can be really hard. To be dangerous for good you will be asked to do hard things in life like tell people something they might not like to hear. Are you ready to choose to be ready instead of waiting till something happens? Know Jesus, Rom. 10:9 REMIND THEM: God has made you as an amazing person. Individual, special and unique. If you have not heard that for a while, I want to tell you that. I care about you, you matter to me. Talk to me if you need to talk. THE SIT SPOT AND GOD SIT SPOT Purpose: Pass out a blank index card and pen. Have them write 2 things. One thing they learned. Then tell them if they want you to pray for them or something going on to please write it on the card and you will pray for them this month. It is a private prayer between your leaders and them, they don't have to put their name on the card. If they don't have a prayer, tell them to just put their name on the card and what they learned. TO PONDER: Give the boys something to ponder, use the questions above, and ask them to go to a sit spot - let them stay while you prepare lunch (quietly without distracting the quiet moment) - (15-30 min.) SEND LEADERS TO SIT SPOTS! If a leader is not assigned a task have them also find a sit spot. It is good for the boys to see the adult leaders doing the same as they are asked to do. QUIET TIME IS ESSENTIAL. CALL BACK FOR LUNCH - While they are eating lunch LUNCH & KOZ LEADERSHIP TAG GUIDANCE WORK ON DOG TAGS Ask boys if they are working toward KOZ Dog Tags. This is a good time to teach this material. Print their cards and have them ready. IMPORTANT: Ask if any of the boys are new give them their KOZ Nation dog tag (the first one) GIVE A BOY HIS NAME IN KOZ We have found that giving boys a nickname is a huge tool for them. Giving a boy a New Name has been a game changer for many. A strong, fierce name is important. Jesus and His Father both gave new names. Ask prayerfully what name a boy should have. The leaders decide NOT the Materials Copyright 2018 - kidsoudoorzone.com - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512-292-1113 6
boys. It is an honor bestowed, even if funny. As you wait for the parents to arrive: Tell the boys you love them. That they are important. That if they have not prayed to ask Christ into their hearts to come talk to a KOZ HTL (ROMANS 10:9). If a kid wants to be baptized, have them talk to you about it - you can do it somewhere really cool! Perform a service project on site. Teach the boys to ALWAYS leave your area BETTER than it was when you got there. Say the KOZ prayer and pray for having had a great day. Parents arrive. Greet them and tell them how good their boy did. Tell the boys to invite a friend! Hand out literature or take home materials... A gallon plastic Zip lock bag with their name on it works great each month to collect their take home materials. Stay, Read the Sit Spot cards. Pray over the cards. Divide them among the HTL s for the month. Materials Copyright 2018 - kidsoudoorzone.com - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512-292-1113 7
