From Our Pastor Dear Parishioners, These final weeks of the church year focus on events which occurred during Our Lord s last week on earth. He has already entered Jerusalem in triumph on Palm Sunday, and now His enemies are deliberately and assiduously plotting means to destroy Him. Groups like the Pharisees, the Herodians, the Sadducees, and the high priests several of whom were at odds with each other constantly have decided that it is good for one man to die for the nation. So the conspiracy deepens. The temple built by Herod will play a great role in this drama. Jesus will drive the moneychangers out of the temple area, enraged that they have turned this sacred space into a den of thieves. He will declare that they will destroy this temple but in three days He will restore it. At Jesus trial before the Sanhedrin on Holy Thursday night, this statement will be used as a blasphemous insult to Judaism. We, of course, know that He was referring to the temple of His body, but the Jewish leaders did not care about such prophecies. This same temple building, which is the focus of attention now, will be destroyed by the Roman army in 70 AD, never to be rebuilt. On the site of this temple mount are now some of the most sacred shrines of Islam, the Al-Aqsa mosque, supposedly erected over the site where Mohammed was taken up to paradise. In the last several weeks, this temple mount was once again front page news as rumors surfaced that the Israelis were attempting to infiltrate this sacred area. International attempts to dispel these reports and assure peace in this most holy place, a spot revered by Jews, Moslems, and Christians, have been only partially successful. Believers treasure their holy shrines and react violently when they feel they are under attack. On Monday, November 9 th, a church sacred to Catholics will be honored on the feast of its dedication. The church of St. John the Baptist in the Lateran Palace (usually called St. John Lateran) claims to be the Mother and Head of All Churches in Rome and the World. This rather grandiose declaration has some merit. After the emperor Constantine legalized Christianity, he donated the Lateran Palace to the Pope of the time for his residence and church. For the next twelve hundred years the Lateran was the center of papal life in the church. The church built there was the first official building where worship could occur publicly. Even today John Lateran is the cathedral church of Rome, not St. Peter s. Five ecumenical councils will be held in the Lateran Basilica compared to only two at the Vatican. As we honor this most sacred Church, we can identify with all believers of every faith who treasure such spots. They may be built by human hands, but they speak of transcendent mysteries. 1 S 314 Summit Ave., Oakbrook Terrace, IL 60181 Ascension of Our Lord 3

Butkovich Trusting widows play a significant role in this weekend s readings. At the point of poverty, when giving even the smallest amount of what they had could imperil their health and well-being, they trusted God and gave anyway. What is important about their giving is not what or how much they gave, but how they gave it. Without selfishness, they gave to help others. Their giving was from the heart, with little hope or intention of receiving any sort of reward or recognition for their generosity. The monetary values of the widows gifts were small, but their value measured in the Kingdom was priceless. There is a significant similarity between their gift and the gift Jesus gave each of us. The widows offered their lives for God. Jesus offered his life for us. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Religious Education DATES THIS WEEK Christmas Choir practice begins ~ All Grades Monday, Nov. 9 Class Photos (Grades 6>8) Wednesday, Nov. 11 NO CLASS (Grades K>5) VETERANS DAY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HEROES AND HEROINES This week we honor and remember those often faceless individuals who have dedicated their lives to protecting our independence; sought and secured justice; and served our nation both in war and in peace. It is a time to say thank you to our fellow brothers and sisters in the military. It is thru their courageous effort and sacrifice that we are able to worship God where and when we want without fear of reprisal; but do we go to Mass each week? So many people around the world would give anything for this luxury yet we take it for granted. Men and women, from Nathan Hale to our current members of the military, have given their lives defending our ideals, protecting our rights to freedom of speech and religion. Honor these Heroes and Heroines take advantage of what they ve earned for you! Maybe you know a Vet and can say thank you maybe you can send a card to Hines Hospital or maybe you can just say a prayer for them. Dear God, Please bless the veterans who wore the faded uniform. May they know the peace of a career well-served, and service completed. Give them our thanks for the doors opened, paths paved, and battles fought. Give them our thanks for the freedom preserved, future defended, and the ideals embodied. Bless the veterans who defended our country with strength and selfless devotion; because of them I am free to honor God and country without persecution Where there is injustice, I am free to fight Where there is silence, I am free to speak Where there is hate, I am free to love. Amen. AH ONE AND AH TWO AND AH Beginning this week and continuing thru December 16, R. E. students will be practicing for our Christmas Eve Choir. If still interested, please turn your Permission Slip in to Marcia. HURRY! Only TWO WEEKS LEFT till our Food Drive and Coat Drive ends and we re behind our projected goal! If you are unable to bring your items here today, you can bring them to the parish lobby during the week or future weekends and we will get them to the warehouse for sorting and distribution. While this weekend s collection is primarily for the needs of the poor served by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Religious Education Program also has several donation needs at this time that will continue through Thanksgiving. The children are collecting COATS, NEW pairs of SOCKS for a juvenile detention home & poor children in the area, plus CASH DONATIONS in support of the Freedom Flight program for elderly veterans. We thank all of you for your tremendous generosity and help for the poor of this area. Above all, we appreciate your continuing prayers of support for our work and for those in need.
