Welcome Reflections: Called to Serve: The following is a letter that was written by one of the YNIA students about the Detroit 2016 service trip: This year I went to Detroit for a YNIA church trip. It was my second trip with YNIA and my little sister was tagging along with me, she s a rookie. I was very excited to get out of New England again and explore the United States a little bit more while doing what I love to do the most, serve people in need. Last year s YNIA trip I was very nervous but this year I was ready to roll, I was a veteran. I was very excited to hear that two other groups were going to be in Detroit with us, a group from Illinois and a group from Nebraska. When we finally got there with excitement pumping through my veins and a smile on my face, I walked through the door and greeted Mike and Rachel, our supervisors. We were the first group to show up so I unpacked my luggage and made my bed for the week, waiting for the other groups to get here. My small groups objective was to go to dumping sites and pick up tires. Now you may think that picking up tires is an easy thing to do, well you are so wrong my friend. The tire sweep was by far the hardest thing any group had to do that week. We had to go to these dump sites where people dump tires illegally, pick them up, put them back into big trucks and then put them into these huge storage containers. These weren t ordinary dumping sites, these sites had mountains of tires, and I do mean mountains. By the end of each tire sweep we all looked like coal miners, literally. We collected roughly around 600 tires or more, depending on the day. By the end of the week we had collected roughly 1,600 tires, along with a few bumps and bruises. Leaving Detroit was very difficult for me, I had to say goodbye to all of the nice, loving people I met and all of the new friends I had made. These YNIA trips are truly amazing, they help us realize that God really does work in mysterious ways and when he starts something, he finishes it. I wouldn t change anything about this trip, it was truly amazing. I am so glad that I had the privilege of meeting all these amazing people and creating these bonds and friendships with them that are truly unbreakable. Even though it is all over and done with and we were all crying and saying our goodbyes, You shouldn t cry because it s over, you should smile because it happened. (Dr. Seuss) This summer the YNIA is called to serve in Tucson, Arizona. February 19, 2017 4 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary
