THE CONVERSIONS IN ACTS SERIES - Lesson Four Lessons from Saul s Conversion - Acts 9; 22:1-21; 26:12-18 Introduction: A. The first converts to the gospel of Christ are the 3,000 Converted that is recorded in Acts 2:1-47; from Acts 3-7 we have the preaching that takes place from Jerusalem thru Judea and then we come to Acts 8:1-25 the conversion of the Samaritans, Acts 8:26-40 the conversion of the Samaritans - Acts 9 - which will be the text of our study this morning. B. By definition (being converted) we are speaking about: 1. Merriam Webster - transitive verb a. : to bring over from one belief, view, or party to another b. : to bring about a religious conversion in c. : to alter the physical or chemical nature or properties of especially in manufacturing (1) : to change from one form or function to another (2) : to alter for more effective utilization 2. Jesus said of this - Matthew 18:3-4 (NKJV) ---- 3 and said, "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. a. Acts 3:19 (NKJV) ---- 19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, b. James 5:19-20 (NKJV) ---- 19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, (convert him KJV) (1) 20 let him know that he who turns (converteth KJV) a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. C. Are You Really Converted? Raymond E. Harris - Muscle Shoals, Alabama 1. The word "convert" means "to change" or "to turn." There are three things involved in the process of one's turning from sin to God. a. A Change of Heart. The heart or mind can only be changed by faith. Faith comes by hearing the word of God (Rom. 10:17). Hence, the Bible teaches that people's hearts are purified "by faith" (Acts 15:9). In other words, when one learns from the Bible about the love God has toward us and the sacrifice of Jesus for us we are moved to repentance. "Repentance" and "conversion" are terms that go hand in hand. When one changes his mind about God and Jesus and sin he will have: b. A Change of Life. A change of heart will lead to a change of life. Repentance is defined as "a change of mind that leads to a change of life." Hence, we see the evolution of conversion. As a result of faith produced by the word of God, man is led to repentance. This reformation in behavior is very visible as the person turns from sin to obedience, from wickedness to righteousness. And when obedience is completed there is: c. A Change of Relationship. In this world there are two classes of accountable people - the wicked and the righteous - the children of the Devil and the children of God. No one can be translated from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of God without a change of heart and a change of life. But one must have remission of sins to make conversion complete. When one's sins are forgiven, he enters a state or relationship with God. Baptism is".. for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:38). Also the Bible says people are baptized "into Christ" (Gal. 3:26-27). Hence, the converted are buried with Christ in baptism and raised to walk in "newness of life" (Rom. 6:3-5). d. Faith changes the heart, repentance changes the life, and baptism changes the relationship to God. One's sins are not forgiven merely because we believe that Jesus is the Savior or because Page 1 of 7

we quit committing them. Sins are forgiven by God when we complete our conversion in baptism. Have you been converted? Truly converted? Fully converted, according to the scriptural plan? Guardian of Truth XXX: 2, p. 43 January 16, 1986 D. Yes indeed ---- 7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; Psalm 19:7 (NKJV) 1. Acts 16:30 (NKJV) ---- 30 And he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" E. As we examine our text let us note some of the basics of who Saul of Tarsus Is and who He became - we will note this in three areas of study: 1. Saul before his conversion sincere, zealous, persecutor 2. The HOW of his conversion Jesus appeared to him and sent him to Damascus where he was told what to do - 3. Saul after his conversion Preached the gospel suffered much for the cause of Christ 4. We have three accounts of his conversion: a. Acts 9:1-30 The account of Conversion b. Acts 22:1-21 His defense when arrested tells of his conversion c. Acts 26:1-23 Before King Agrippa tells about his conversion II. The Conversion of Saul of Tarsus - Before His Conversion A. Enemy - Persecutor 1. Acts 7:58 - An accomplice ---- (NKJV) - 58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. 2. Acts 8:1-3 - Havoc of church / prison ---- (NKJV) - 1 Now Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. 3 As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison. 3. Acts 9:1-2 - Threats & murder ---- (NKJV) - 1 Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 4. Acts 22:4-5 Death ---- (NKJV) - 4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women, 5 as also the high priest bears me witness, and all the council of the elders, from whom I also received letters to the brethren, and went to Damascus to bring in chains even those who were there to Jerusalem to be punished. 5. Acts 26:9-11 - Enraged against them ---- (NKJV) - 9 Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them. 11 And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities. B. Very Religious ---- A Pharisee - Acts 23:6 (NKJV) ---- 6 But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee; concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged! 1. Philippians 3:4-6 (NKJV) ---- 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; 6 concerning zeal, Page 2 of 7

persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. 2. Galatians 1:13-14 (NKJV) ---- 13 For you have heard of my former conduct in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it. 14 And I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers. C. Devout - Sincere 1. Acts 22:3 zealous towards God - (NKJV) ---- 3 I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today. 2. Acts 23:1 - I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day ---- (NKJV) - 1 Then Paul, looking earnestly at the council, said, "Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day." 3. Acts 24:16 - I myself always strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men. ---- (NKJV) - 16 This being so, I myself always strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men. 4. Acts 26:9 - Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. III. Saul s Conversion A. Saul s Experience: 1. Jesus Appeared to Him on the road to Damascus: a. Saw a Bright Light (9:3; 22:6; 26:13) (1) Acts 9:3 (NKJV) ---- 3 As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. (2) Acts 22:6 (NKJV) ---- 6 Now it happened, as I journeyed and came near Damascus at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me. (3) Acts 26:13 (NKJV) ---- 13 at midday, O king, along the road I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and those who journeyed with me. b. Heard the Voice (9:4-6; 22:7-10; 26:14-18) (1) Acts 9:4-6 (NKJV) ---- 4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? 5 And he said, Who are You, Lord? Then the Lord said, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads. 6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, Lord, what do You want me to do? Then the Lord said to him, Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do. (2) Acts 22:7-10 (NKJV) ---- 7 And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? 8 So I answered, Who are You, Lord? And He said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting. 9 And those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of Him who spoke to me. 10 So I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do. (3) Acts 26:14-18 (NKJV) ---- 14 And when we all had fallen to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me and saying in the Hebrew language, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads. 15 So I said, Who are You, Lord? And He said, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 16 But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. 17 I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, 18 to open Page 3 of 7

their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me. (a) What he heard - Why persecute me? (b) I am Jesus (c) Go into city told what to do c. Appeared to you -send to Gentiles (22:21; 26:17-20) (1) Acts 22:21 (NKJV) ---- 21 Then He said to me, Depart, for I will send you far from here to the Gentiles. (2) Acts 26:17-20 (NKJV) ---- 17 I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, 18 to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me. 19 Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. d. Blinded (9:7-9; 22:11) (1) Acts 9:7-9 (NKJV) ---- 7 And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. 8 Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank. (2) Acts 22:11 (NKJV) ---- 11 And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus. B. Purpose of appearance: note it was not to save Saul! 1. Qualified to be an apostle (Acts 1:22; 1 Cor. 9:1) a. Acts 1:22 (NKJV) ---- 22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection. b. 1 Corinthians 9:1 (NKJV) ---- 1 Am I not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? 2. Sent him to Gentiles (Acts 9:15-16; 22:21; 26:16-18) a. Acts 9:15-16 (NKJV) ---- 15 But the Lord said to him, Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name s sake. b. Acts 22:21 (NKJV) ---- 21 Then He said to me, Depart, for I will send you far from here to the Gentiles. c. Acts 26:16-18 (NKJV) ---- 16 But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. 17 I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, 18 to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me. C. Things we learn from this event - Saul is Not Saved On The Road 1. Saved before being told what he must do? (Acts 9:6; 22:10) ---- (NKJV) - 6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, Lord, what do You want me to do? Then the Lord said to him, Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do. ---- Acts 22:10 (NKJV) - 10 So I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do. Page 4 of 7

IV. 2. Saved but still miserable??? - (Acts 9:9,11) ---- (NKJV)-9 And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.----acts 9:11 (NKJV)-11 So the Lord said to him, Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. 3. Saved but still in his sins??? - (Acts 22:16) - (NKJV) ---- 16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. 4. Saved without calling on the name of the Lord? - (Acts 22:16) D. What we do see in this conversion is that Jesus Sent a Preacher 1. Ananias told Saul what he MUST do Acts 9:10-19 - (NKJV) ---- 10 Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Here I am, Lord. 11 So the Lord said to him, Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. 12 And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight. 13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. 14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name. 15 But the Lord said to him, Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name s sake. 17 And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. 18 Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized. 19 So when he had received food, he was strengthened. Then Saul spent some days with the disciples at Damascus. a. Not to pray or ask Jesus into his heart... (Acts 9:11; 22:16) b. He Believed in Christ (John 8:24) - (NKJV) ---- 24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins. c. His actions show he had Repented (Acts 17:30-31) - (NKJV) ---- 30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead. d. But he lacked one thing - He was told to be baptized, calling on the name of the Lord (Acts 22:16) The effects of His Conversion - Afterward We see: A. A Sincere, Devoted, Loyal Disciple 1. Forgiven (Acts 22:16) 2. Taught (Acts 9:20-22; 26:20-23) a. Acts 9:20-22 (NKJV) ---- 20 Immediately he preached the Christ in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God. 21 Then all who heard were amazed, and said, Is this not he who destroyed those who called on this name in Jerusalem, and has come here for that purpose, so that he might bring them bound to the chief priests? 22 But Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who dwelt in Damascus, proving that this Jesus is the Christ. b. Acts 26:20-23 (NKJV) ---- 20 but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. 21 For these reasons the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me. 22 Therefore, having obtained help from God, to this day I stand, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those which the prophets and Page 5 of 7

Moses said would come 23 that the Christ would suffer, that He would be the first to rise from the dead, and would proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles. 3. Identified (9:26-28)- (NKJV) ---- 26 And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. 28 So he was with them at Jerusalem, coming in and going out. a. Local church membership b. Church careful B. Active in the local church 1. Acts 26:19-21 (NKJV) ---- 20 but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. 21 For these reasons the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me. 2. 1 Corinthians 15:9-10 (NKJV) ---- 9 For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 3. 2 Corinthians 11:23-28 (NKJV) ---- 23 Are they ministers of Christ?--I speak as a fool--i am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. 24 From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; 26 in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; 27 in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness-- 28 besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches. 4. Had confidence in his salvation 2 Timothy 4:6-8 (NKJV) - 6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness,... V. In Conclusion: A. Before 1. Adversary 2. Enemy 3. Destroyer 4. Persecutor B. After 1. Advocate 2. Defender 3. Builder 4. Persecuted C. Lessons and Application from this conversion: 1. Salvation NOT inherited 2. Not saved because taught by popular teachers 3. Not saved just because religious and sincere 4. Sincere people can harm Christ and His church Page 6 of 7

1 5. Not saved by faith only 6. A penitent person who believes the truth has their sins washed away when they are baptized 7. Converted people are devoted to the cause of Christ 8. Those faithful to Christ may indeed suffer many things in this life but if faithful the Lord will reward us! D. How about yourself? 1. Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God? 2. Have you confessed Jesus as the Christ? 3. Have you repented and been baptized having your sins washed away? (Acts 22:16; 2:38) a. Acts 22:16 (NKJV) ---- 16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. b.
