Leader: Loving God, the comfort of all who sorrow, the strength of all who suffer: accept our prayers, and to those who seek comfort in this night of sorrow, grant the power of your grace, that the weak may be strengthened, sickness turned to health, the dying made whole, and our sorrow at the death of your beloved Son be turned into joy; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. The Leader reads Now, when the Waters are Pressing Mightily Now, when the waters are pressing mightily On the walls of the dams, Now, when the white storks, returning, Are transformed in the middle of the firmament Into fleets of jet planes, We will feel again how strong are the ribs And how vigorous is the warm air in the lungs And how much daring is needed to love on the exposed plain, When the great dangers are arched above, And how much love is required To fill the empty vessels And the watches that stopped telling time, And how much breath, A whirlwind of breath, To sing the small song of spring. [ Yehuda Amichai, The NEW YORKER MAGAZINE, 2005] Leader: God is love and we are his children. There is no room for fear in love. We love because God loved us first. Chant No. 1 The People join as desired, standing or Wait for the Lord whose day is near. Wait for the Lord; be strong take heart. Lesson 1 - from Genesis 1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God said, "Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." So God separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. And God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And it was good. And there were lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the
night; and for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and to give light upon the earth. And God said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky." So God created every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." And God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And it was good. Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. And it was so, and indeed, it was very good. Chant No. 2 The People join as desired, standing or Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom Lesson 2 - from Job Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind: "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a human being, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? "Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb? when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped'? "Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep? Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness? Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth? Declare, if you know all this. Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great! Chant No. 3 The People join as desired, standing or The Lord is my light, my light and salvation; in God I trust, in God I trust. Psalm 90 The People read together. Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting
you are God. You turn us back to dust, and say, "Turn back, you mortals." For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night. You sweep them away; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning; in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. For we are consumed by your anger; by your wrath we are overwhelmed. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. For all our days pass away under your wrath; our years come to an end like a sigh. The days of our life are seventy years, or perhaps eighty, if we are strong; even then their span is only toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. Who considers the power of your anger? Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you. So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. Turn, O LORD! How long? Have compassion on your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad as many days as you have afflicted us, and as many years as we have seen evil. Let your work be manifest to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the work of our hands-- O prosper the work of our hands! Chant No. 4 The People join as desired, standing or O Lord, hear my prayer, O Lord, hear my prayer. When I call answer me. O Lord, hear my prayer, O Lord, hear my prayer. Come and listen to me. Lesson 4 - from Ecclesiastes For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. What gain have the workers from their toil? I have seen the business that God has given to everyone to be busy with. He has made everything suitable for its time; moreover he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I know that there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live; moreover, it is God's gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil. I know that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor
anything taken from it; God has done this, so that all should stand in awe before him. Psalm The People join as desired Christ Jesus, being found in human form, humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. O LORD, I call to you; come to me quickly; * hear my voice when I cry to you. Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as incense, * the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Set a watch before my mouth, O LORD, and guard the door of my lips; * let not my heart incline to any evil thing. My eyes are turned to you, Lord GOD; * in you I take refuge.
