YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT The effect of receiving the body and blood of Christ is to change us into what we receive. Pope Saint Leo the Great Dear Parish Family, Grace, healing, and peace to you in Christ Jesus our Lord! My first inclination was to not get too into the issue of the scandal this past week. Wednesday, I heard stories that made me sick and my heart was heavy and hurting. That night I met with the Festival of Praise Leadership Team and all of us offered the pain and suffering of our hearts of Jesus through song. When we finished praising the Lord and giving our pain to His Sacred Heart, I found my heart was completely at peace! I was so grateful! Wednesday night I received a sense that what we really need is the ability to forgive. Can we forgive the priests who hurt us? Can we forgive people who are intentionally trying to discredit and destroy the Church? Can we forgive ourselves and others for gossip and hatred toward those who have hurt us and our parish family? Can we forgive those who jump on the bandwagon of hate toward us who are the Church? Remember that forgiveness and reconciliation are not the same thing. Reconciliation is a restoration of friendship or harmony, where forgiveness is a cancelling of a dept. In other words, when you are hurt by a wrong, you feel the need to punish the person who hurt you, because they owe you something. When you forgive them, you give up your right and desire to punish the person. Interestingly enough, when we give up our right to punish someone for something it is we ourselves who reap the benefit! I can personally testify that the experience of forgiveness is life changing freedom! We must also remember that God is the Judge who knows the whole truth and He will certainly act with both perfect justice and perfect mercy. Let us allow God to be God when it comes to judging. When it comes to action, let us remember the serenity prayer! God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. (Reinbold Niebuhr) As I mentioned last week, the definition of contemplative prayer that I really like is the commitment to behold the beauty of Christ until we become more fascinated with God than ourselves. We cannot behold the beauty of God if we are transfixed on the ugliness of sin! We must hear what is being said, receive it with prudence, and offer all of it to Jesus. Then we can continue to take up our usual daily posture of gazing upon the Lord and knowing what Truth, Beauty, and Love really are. May you be blessed as you share every wound with Jesus and receive His powerful healing. In Christ, Fr. Levi

If you are seen as a Prayer Warrior by most people that you know, this movie will move you to an even deeper level of commitment. If you are a married person, regardless of how happy your marriage is, this movie is for you as well. War Room is a 2015 Movie that was a big hit in the theaters and on DVD. One of the stars of this excellent movie is Karen Abercrombie, who is from nearby Aliquippa. She plays the dynamic Miss Clara, whose unwavering love of God and commitment to prayer captivates everyone she contacts. Tony and Elizabeth Jordan have everything that they ever wanted, but they are also losing what they once valued most - each other. Enter Miss Clara and her battle plan for Elizabeth. This battle plan involves a War Room and a battle plan of prayer and the Word of God. This movie is about Prayer and how it can impact and change bad situations in one's marriage, professional life and life in general. Director Kendrick says "We called it 'War Room because, like the military, we should seek God for the right strategy before going into combat. By combat, I mean daily issues we face in our culture. War Room was the work of the Kendrick brothers, who also gave us the excellent movie Facing the Giants (reviewed in our bulletin on 2/4/18). I give this movie Five Beards out of Five Beards for its promotion of prayer, family and forgiveness. Forget the shows on network tv or cable. This movie is must see TV! Live Jesus in our hearts..forever THE GIFT OF GRACE Deacon Tim The gift of grace increases as the struggles increase. St. Rose of Lima READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Ez 24:15-24; Dt 32:18-21; Mt 19:16-22 Tuesday: Ez 28:1-10; Dt 32:26-28, 30, 35cd-36ab; Mt 19:23-30 Wednesday: Ez 34:1-11; Ps 23:1-6; Mt 20:1-16 Thursday: Ez 36:23-28; Ps 51:12-15, 18-19; Mt 22:1-14 Friday: Rv 21:9b-14; Ps 145:10-13, 17-18; Jn 1:45-51 Saturday: Ez 43:1-7a; Ps 85:9ab, 10-14; Mt 23:1-12 Sunday: Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b; Ps 34:2-3, 16-21; Eph 5:21-32 [2a, 25-32]; Jn 6:60-69 THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural and not coincidental that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the Bread of Life discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! August Festival of Praise The theme of August s Festival of Praise was Hope and Healing. Beautiful pre-festival piano music was provided by 12-year old Gabriella and the Praise Band was in fine form as they led us through the inspirational songs. Fr. Steve introduced the evening by welcoming the attendees and reminding us that we were all there for the praise, honor and glory of God. He said that we heal because of the hope we have in Jesus death and the ultimate prize of heaven. Jesus gave us His Body and Blood as nourishment to help us get through our day-to-day challenges. Healing also comes from human contact and relationships. Father talked about the upcoming changes to the church and the anger and anxiety people are experiencing. He said there are two types of anger. Rage and revenge is sinful anger, while displeasure and feeling that we aren t in control is not sinful. He reminded us that God is in control, not us. God is always there to help us heal and to give us hope for eternal life. Fr. John Skirtich, administrator of St. Gabe s, was the presider and homilist. He talked about the difference between temporal hope and theological hope. He related temporal hope to his recent trip to Virginia Beach where he hoped to have a good vacation (and he didn t). God doesn t promise our temporal hopes, but He does promise eternal life if we remain united in Him. Our hope in the future affects the present moment. He also talked about the difference between being healed and being cured. Cures happen occasionally, but healing is always available to everyone. In His earthly ministry, Jesus not only cured people s physical ailments, but he drove out demons and restored their peace. Time is also a healer. When we experience something painful, God will heal us over time. He wants us to enjoy our lives and will heal us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Fr. John also touched briefly on the Grand Jury report about to be released and said that the church will not be defeated by this. Eucharistic Adoration and Procession completed this meaningful and thought-provoking evening. Saturday September 8, 2018 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM If you have attended the Festival in the past, you have witnessed that spending time with Jesus in praise and worship is an unbelievable experience. If you haven t attended in the past, it would be good to consider joining the community of faithful believers to praise Jesus and worship Him and accept Him in your life. This month Father Mike Ackerman will be back to preside over our service. The Festival of Praise is an excellent way to thank Jesus for all the blessings He has bestowed on us and to help us acknowledge that Jesus is aware of our troubles and that He is alive within us. This a journey that brings peace and power for living. Check out the Festival of Praise page in the Holy Apostles Parish website for information about the upcoming service. There you will find many pictures and videos of previous services. Our Praise Band Repertoire now includes more than forty beautiful songs and continues to grow monthly. Many of these songs can be viewed and listened to on You Tube as performed by the recording l of Praise artist. THE DEACON S CORNER Deacon s Corner Our Nar-Anon meetings are every Monday. We hope to continue to grow our family and provide support for those who are dealing daily with the insanity of addiction; those who are friends or family members of an addict. As we have stated, these meetings are to provide input to those who are suffering and wish to learn through the experiences live by others. Remember we maintain anonymity. Speak if you want or just listen, but please come. Nar-Anon website: http://www.nar-anon.org Every Monday, 6:30 pm In the St. Albert Chapel area 3198 Schieck St., Baldwin, PA A SPECIAL THANK YOU Catholic Charities would like to thank the members of Holy Apostles Parish for donating diapers and wipes to our Diaper Drive Campaign! Holy Apostle has greatly contributed to the success of our drive and has played a large role in reaching our goal. Your donations will go a long way in assisting struggling families provide essential care to their smallest members. THE ROSARY CLUB St Pope John Paul II said "The Rosary is my favorite prayer." St Francis de Sales said "The greatest method of praying is to pray the Rosary. St Louis de Monfort said "Never will anyone who says the Rosary every day be lead astray. This is a statement that I would gladly sign in my own blood." Deacon Tim is starting a Rosary Club. The Rosary Club will meet at 7 pm on the First Friday of every month to say the Rosary at St Albert the Great. The next meeting of the Rosary Club will be on Friday, September 7 at 7 pm DTT at St Albert the Great Church Invite someone to Mass next weekend! Cut out the invita on below To: From: This is a personal and hear elt invita on from me and my family of Holy Apostles Parish to come and join us each weekend at Church. Will you come and pray with us? WE ARE SAVING A SEAT FOR YOU! During some of the darkest days of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln, it is said, happened into a church service. During the service the minister was very gracious to pray to the Lord to be on our side and to give the victory to our side. After the service was over, Lincoln said to his companion: As for me, I have learned to ask but one thing of the Lord not that He may be on our side, but that I be on His side. When Moses came down with the Ten Commandments and found the people sinning and worshiping the golden calf, God told Moses these are a stiff-necked people (Exodus 32). Stand back while I destroy them all and start over. But Moses pleaded with God and they were saved. We American s are also a very stiffednecked people. We used to think of ourselves as a Christian nation. But today, with our disrespect for life and the dignity of others, as God created them, I would question our status as a Christian Nation. To be on the Lord s side is to be on the right side, the safe side, the winning side in the end. To be on the Lord s side should be our Nation s first concern and our personal goal. It is the Lord s side or the world s side. Where do you stand?
