Sister Ann Marie Hayes of the Suffering Servant, OCD passed away June 7, 2018. Sister is a native of Rome and daughter of James M. and Claire Hayes. Sister was a member of St. Mary s Parish and attended St. Mary s School, Rome Catholic High and Siena College in Loudonville. Sister s mother lives in Rochester. Sister lived in Piedmont, OK where she worked in and then headed the Altar Bread Department. May she rest in peace. Several years ago, Many young girls and young men from Rome answered God s Call to be Sisters and Priests. It seemed like God was working overtime to call his helpers. Many responded! Today God still calls our youth but they are not answering His call. We need to pray for vocations. FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE (John 6:41-51) Provided by the Hope Appeal Funds Stop murmuring Jesus told the disciples in today s gospel. Complaining is a deadend and constant complaining is nagging. We might feel better but others feel bitter. Silence or grumbling will not resolve the problem. Address differences honestly and respectfully. Do not make them personal attacks.

Page Four Dear Padre, What does doxology mean? The verses of a popular gospel song, How Can I Keep From Singing, speak of our struggle with sorrow and darkness, and the ultimate joy we have knowing Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth, / How can I keep from singing? The songwriter joyfully sings out because of God s love; it s a doxology of praise. Doxology, a glorious utterance, is a prayer the Church uses to give God praise. We have countless examples in Scripture, such as the psalms, which by their nature give God rightful praise. The Sanctus acclamation is another example. Taken from Isaiah 6, it directs our focus to praising God for his power and might. On Christmas night we sing Glory to God in the highest, a doxology from the angels. The Eucharistic prayers end with a doxology to the Trinity showing how the Holy Spirit who thus awakens the memory of the Church then inspires thanksgiving and praise (doxology), Catechism of the Catholic Church, We use doxologies to emphasize our worship of God, acknowledging his rightful praise. Doxologies are part of major liturgical prayers such as the Eucharistic prayers, the communion rite where we add a doxology following the Our Father. We also add doxologies to our personal prayers. The rosary contains a well-known doxology called the Gloria Patri, a prayer praising the eternal nature and love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Fr. John K. Schmidt HONORING OUR LADY OF FATIMA A PROCESSION WILL BE HELD IN HONOR OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA Sunday, August 19th Beginning at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church to Historic St. John s Church in Utica starting at 1:30 pm The Rosary led by Mike Dziura. will be prayed along the way, The Rosary will be said there. When the statue of Our Lady arrives at St. John s there will be Benediction. In the First Kings, we hear of Elijah s cry to the Lord when he prays for death. He is visited by an angel who tells him to eat and drink in order to be able to withstand his journey. In Paul s Letter to the Ephesians, he reminds us to remove evil and instead take on compassion and mercy. In today s Gospel, Jesus explains that receiving him, the Bread of Life, is the way to the Father in heaven. The claims that Jesus makes about himself leave us with a choice: to receive him and be transformed, following him as he leads us to the Father, or to remain as we are. Jesus, the Bread of life, teaches us how to come to the Father. Our annual HOPE APPEAL continues as we try to reach our parish goal. The programs, services and ministries supported by the Hope Appeal help meet the needs of people in our parish and diocese. The HOPE Appeal serves all of us in different ways. I ask your good support of this important campaign. I THANK the parishioners who have already made a pledge to this year s appeal. If you have not responded to the HOPE Appeal I ask that you prayerfully consider making a pledge to help support these marvelous diocesan programs. A little smile The old Pastor made it a practice to visit the parish school one day a week. He walked into the fourth grade class, where the children we studying the states, and asked them how many states they could name. They came up with about 40 names. He jokingly told them that in his day students knew the names of all the states. One lad raised his had and said, Yes, but in those days there were only 13. Another smile A mother overheard he little girl praying now I lay me down to rest. I pray I pass tomorrow s test. If I should die before I wake, that s one less test I ll have to take. Remember God loves you and so do I!

God Shows Up with Surprises True love is both loving and letting oneself be loved. It is harder to let ourselves be loved than it is to love. That is why it is so hard to achieve the perfect love of God, because we can love him, but the important thing is to let ourselves be loved by him. True love is being open to that love which was there first and catches us by surprise. If all you have is information, you are closed to surprises. Love makes you open to surprises. Love is always a surprise because it starts with a dialogue between two persons: the one who loves and the one who is loved. We say that God is the God of surprises because he always loved us first, and he waits to take us by surprise. God surprises us. Let s allow ourselves to be surprises by God. St. Mary s/st.
