The Principles of the Doctrine of Christ

Lesson 4 The Doctrine of Baptisms

The principles of the doctrine of Christ are listed in the same order as they are experienced by a disciple of the Lord. Hebrews 6:1-2 1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

Our new life in Christ begins when we turn away from the dead works of self-righteousness and put our faith in God.

Our new life in Christ begins when we turn away from the dead works of self-righteousness and put our faith in God. Now two different baptisms -- water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit will show the irrevocable work of Christ in our lives.

Why a baptism in water?

Why a baptism in water? Water is used with great significance in the Bible:

God calls himself the fountain of living waters.

God calls himself the fountain of living waters. Jeremiah 2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

Jesus quenches our thirst with that same living water:

Jesus quenches our thirst with that same living water: John 7:37-39 37... Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

In the Old Testament, the priests were cleansed with water of purifying.

In the Old Testament, the priests were cleansed with water of purifying. Numbers 8:5-7 5 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 6 Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them. 7 And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean.

In the Old Testament, the priests were cleansed with water of purifying. Moses commanded that the spoils of war be purified with the water of separation.

In the Old Testament, the priests were cleansed with water of purifying. Moses commanded that the spoils of war be purified with the water of separation. Numbers 31:23 Every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.

In the Old Testament, the priests were cleansed with water of purifying. Moses commanded that the spoils of war be purified with the water of separation. Ezekiel foretold a day when God would sanctify and cleanse Israel with clean water.

In the Old Testament, the priests were cleansed with water of purifying. Moses commanded that the spoils of war be purified with the water of separation. Ezekiel foretold a day when God would sanctify and cleanse Israel with clean water. Ezekiel 36:24-25 24 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. 25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

Jesus sanctifies and cleanses his church with the washing of water by the word.

Jesus sanctifies and cleanses his church with the washing of water by the word. Ephesians 5:25-26 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

Jesus sanctifies and cleanses his church with the washing of water by the word. Believers are washed with pure water.

Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Jesus sanctifies and cleanses his church with the washing of water by the word. Believers are washed with pure water. Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Of course, no water on earth is capable of such purification.

In a figure, water shows the cleansing power of the Spirit of God through the blood of Jesus Christ.

In a figure, water shows the cleansing power of the Spirit of God through the blood of Jesus Christ. 1 John 5:8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

Now, notice the word baptisms here is plural.

Just as there are SIX principles of the doctrine of Christ that must be learned before we go on unto perfection 1. Repentance from Dead Works 2. Faith Toward God 3. The Doctrine of Baptisms 4. The Laying on of Hands 5. The Resurrection of the Dead 6. Eternal Judgment Hebrews 6:1-2 1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

there are SIX baptisms that will be experienced on earth before we go on to the perfection of the final paradise: Hebrews 6:1-2 1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

6. The Baptism of Fire

1. The Baptism in the Ark The baptism of Noah s day foreshadowed the salvation made possible by the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

1. The Baptism in the Ark The baptism of Noah s day foreshadowed the salvation made possible by the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Eight people entered the ark and were buried in a watery grave. Then Noah and his family came out of that wooden tomb to start a new life on a cleansed planet.

1. The Baptism in the Ark 1 Peter 3:20b-21 20 when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

2. The Baptism in the Red Sea The children of Israel were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea (1 Cor 10:2).

2. The Baptism in the Red Sea The children of Israel were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea (1 Cor 10:2). The Red Sea was the water of separation that divided God s people from their enemies and those who were saved from those who were damned.

2. The Baptism in the Red Sea The children of Israel were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea (1 Cor 10:2). The Red Sea was the water of separation that divided God s people from their enemies and those who were saved from those who were damned. The sea air was for some the sweet fragrance of life but to others it was the smell of death.

2. The Baptism in the Red Sea 2 Corinthians 2:15-16a 15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: 16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life...

3. The Baptism of Repentance John s baptism prepared men s hearts to receive the Lord in the same way that repentance from dead works makes way for faith toward God.

3. The Baptism of Repentance Luke 3:3-4 3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

4. Christian Baptism Christian baptism or baptism in the name of Jesus Christ illustrates a believer s death, burial, and resurrection in Christ.

4. Christian Baptism Romans 6:4-5 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

4. Christian Baptism Water baptism demonstrates the complete work of Christ on the cross:

4. Christian Baptism Colossians 2:10 and 12 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

4. Christian Baptism A person is not baptized in order to get saved. He is baptized because he is saved, and because it is the Lord s command.

4. Christian Baptism Matthew 28:18-19 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

4. Christian Baptism Mark 16:15-16 15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

5. The Baptism of the Holy Ghost In the Old Testament, God sealed his covenant with Abraham with the sign of circumcision.

5. The Baptism of the Holy Ghost In the Old Testament, God sealed his covenant with Abraham with the sign of circumcision. Romans 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe...

5. The Baptism of the Holy Ghost Now God seals the covenant he makes with whosoever believeth in him by way of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

5. The Baptism of the Holy Ghost Now God seals the covenant he makes with whosoever believeth in him by way of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

5. The Baptism of the Holy Ghost The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives and the gifts he manifests through us makes possible a new level of communion with God.

5. The Baptism of the Holy Ghost The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives and the gifts he manifests through us makes possible a new level of communion with God. John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

6. The Baptism of Fire As foretold by John, the baptism of the Holy Ghost and the baptism of fire are administered by Christ alone.

6. The Baptism of Fire As foretold by John, the baptism of the Holy Ghost and the baptism of fire are administered by Christ alone. Matthew 3:11-12 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: 12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

6. The Baptism of Fire God judged the world the first time with water. The second time will be with fire.

6. The Baptism of Fire God judged the world the first time with water. The second time will be with fire. 2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

How do these SIX baptisms agree with the ONE baptism of Ephesians 4? Ephesians 4:4-6 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

How do these SIX baptisms agree with the ONE baptism of Ephesians 4? Each baptism uniquely illustrates the separation of the children of God from the children of the world.

Jesus divides the sheep from the goats so that he can sanctify and cleanse his chosen ones and build his church. Ephesians 4:4-6 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Together, the first three principles of the doctrine of Christ Repentance from Dead Works Faith toward God, and The Doctrine of Baptisms, demonstrate the complete work of the cross. Nothing other work is needed to secure a believer to Christ.

Together, the first three principles of the doctrine of Christ Repentance from Dead Works Faith toward God, and The Doctrine of Baptisms, demonstrate the complete work of the cross. Nothing other work is needed to secure a believer to Christ. When these truths are fully settled in a person s heart, he is ready to truly and selflessly serve the Lord and his people.
