It was the commemoration of God s deliverance of the chosen people from bondage. It is within this context that Jesus initiates his own covenant meal that we continue to celebrate as Eucharist. Jesus gives specific instructions to his disciples on where to go, what to look for, and what to say. Everything came together just as he said. All indications are that this meal was a Passover meal. This was the sacred meal that all Jesus believed commemorated the saving action of God in freeing the chosen people from Egyptian bondage. When generations made memory of this event, they believed that they actually passed over from bondage to freedom. For the Jews, memory had the power to make real. This was a form of real presence. Within the context of this Passover meal, Jesus, by his words and actions interprets his impending death, and points to the coming kingdom of God. Took, blessed, broke, gave and said, are for Jesus, Eucharistic words. By these words and actions Jesus establishes a new covenant in his blood which will be affected through his death. Death is not the final moment. All of this is pointing to the glory of the coming kingdom of God. Through this action Jesus pledges his real presence each time his followers make memory of him. When we celebrate the Eucharist today, we enter that same covenant. We promise to work for the liberation of all people, from every evil, from sickness, hunger, injustice, and every form of oppression and violence. We must act as the Lord acts, bringing healing, forgiveness and love into life s brokenness. It is not enough to simply do the Eucharistic ritual, we must live our lives in the way that Jesus did. Where, besides Eucharist, have you encountered the real presence of Jesus? Father Joe Schneider Bulletin Deadline Bulletin items are due by noon on Mondays. New Vaccine For Shingles The Archbishop received a letter from the chair of the USCCB's Pro-Life Committee about a new FDA approved vaccine for shingles, Shingrix (GlaxoSmithKline). It is more effective than the current vaccine Zostavax (Merck) AND it was produced in an ethically acceptable way without the use of cell lines derived from aborted fetuses (vs. Zostavax). Please spread the word in your parishes/clusters about this preferable vaccine for shingles. Local Cemetery Reminder Please remove flowers and decorations placed on gravesites by Monday, June 18. June 3, 2018 - The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ 7 What You Should Know About the NEW TAX LAW & CHARITABLE GIVING Now that the 2017 tax season has passed, our attention turns towards the recently passed Tax Reform Law and its potential impact on charitable giving in 2018. Below you will find some information and, hopefully, some helpful guidance as responsible stewards of God s many gifts. So, what will change? The standard deduction (allowed on federal tax forms) will nearly double to $12,000 for individuals and $24,000 for married couples. This change (coupled with other restrictions) will reduce the number of individuals and families who itemize their federal taxes. Fewer people itemizing their federal taxes will mean that fewer people will be receiving a federal tax deduction for cash gifts given to charity. Gifts, such as, those receiving a tax credit (for example, the STO), appreciated stock gifts, gifts of property, grain gifts, and IRA charitable rollover gifts will all continue to offer excellent ways to save tax. The tax benefits of charitable giving will remain the same on your state taxes in Iowa, since those still have not changed. The charitable deduction for those who will continue to itemize is still very much available and, in fact, has been enhanced, allowing individuals to deduct up to 60% (up from 50%) of their adjusted gross income to charity. And, most importantly Our reason for giving hasn t changed! Rather than giving in order to save on tax, we give to a cause, to a mission, in the name of Christian charity. The message of Christ was, is, and will forever be the expectation that we help those in need by among other things being good stewards of the many gifts with which we have been entrusted. Supporting the mission of Christ through the sharing of our gifts at the local, diocesan, and universal levels is still very much a part of our identity as Catholics. Other things to consider: Certain individuals and families might end up saving some tax under the new law. Perhaps those who do will think to donate a portion of those savings through charitable giving. Even this year, a certain number of us will be receiving a tax return. A generous option might be to share a portion of that return through a gift to a charity that supports the poor and disadvantaged or perhaps to our parish community. This information is not intended as legal or tax advice. Taxpayers should consult with their tax advisor as to his/her specific situation. MARRIAGE MOMENTS ~ Do this in remembrance of me (1 Cor. 11:24) Jesus used these words when sharing bread and wine with the apostles at the Last Supper. When we consume food and drink it becomes part of our body and blood. Be mindful of Jesus presence in the next meal you eat together. ~ by Susan Vogt, www.susanvogt.net
