St. John the Baptist, Hey June/July 2018 Receiving and Sharing the Love of God Everyday Dear Friends, Jesus found Philip and then Philip found Nathaniel. And then Philip melts back into the background. (John 1.43-51) He is the disciple who found another disciple. Nathaniel s not sure about following Philip who follows Jesus. Philip doesn t try to convince him as such. He just says, Come and see. Disciples are incredibly important. The Gospel accounts are about Jesus and his disciples. The disciples are present throughout the Gospel accounts of Jesus adult life. The story of Jesus ministry starts with Jesus finding the disciples. He doesn t go off healing the sick and telling parable stories until the disciples are all there. They follow him. They watch him. They listen to him. They question him. They get things right. They get things wrong. They desert him at the cross. They are led to the empty tomb. They encounter the risen Christ. They are filled with the Holy Spirit. They are sent out to the nations. Nothing happens without the disciples being involved in some way or other. Philip s invitation to Nathaniel is the invitation to all would-be disciples and followers of Christ. Come and see. He is himself not the most spectacular disciple. He is not a Peter or a Thomas. But crucially he models discipleship. What does he say? We have

found him, And then he says. Come and see. Philip is following and he asks others to follow also. And we too are invited to follow Jesus and be his disciples. This is what the Church of England website has to say about discipleship. To be a disciple is to be called to a life of learning and formation in the likeness of Christ. Jesus calls men and women to be disciples: to learn from him, to pattern their lives upon his life, to follow him. Disciples are formed and sustained primarily through the grace of God seen in the witness of the local church. The local church is a community dedicated to a life of prayer, learning, service and worship. The community live this out when they gather on Sunday for worship. At the end of the service the congregation are sent out to live their discipleship in daily life. The reason why I have written the above is because at the end of July, our Parish and community will be starting a new chapter in the life of St John s. As we welcome Lyn to be our new and longawaited Vicar, we also welcome her as a new leader for our discipleship in Christ. A time when we can now look ahead and outward to our community, rather than to secure and maintain and protect what we have had during the interregnum. The interregnum was difficult for many of us and we have pulled together remarkably to the level of even seeing growth in the church rather than an expected decline. But now we are at that point that we can say We have done it and we have done it very well indeed, and we can all take that deep intake of breath and smile and look forward to what lies ahead. Love and prayers

24th June John the Baptist Preparing the way for the Messiah John the Baptist is famous for Baptising Jesus, and for losing his head to a woman. He was born to Zechariah, a Temple priest, and Elizabeth, who was a cousin of Mary, the mother of Jesus. John was born when his mother was advanced in years, and after the foretelling of his birth and the choice of his name by an angel, we hear nothing more of him until he began his mission of preaching and baptising in the river Jordan c27. John was a lot like an Old Testament prophet: he lived simply on locusts and honey in the wilderness, and his message was one of repentance and preparation for the coming of the Messiah and his Kingdom. He went on to baptise Jesus, at Jesus firm request. When John went on to denounce the incestuous union of Herod Antipas with his niece and brother s wife, Herodias, he was imprisoned and eventually beheaded at the demand of Salome, Herodias daughter. John is the only saint to be remembered three times in the Christian calendar, in commemoration of his conception, his birth (June 24), and his martyrdom. When John saw Jesus he said that Jesus was the Lamb of God, and he is the only person to use this expression of Jesus. In art John is often depicted carrying a lamb, or with a lamb near him. Matt 3.4 Now John wore clothing of camel s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
