Page 3 Dear Friends in Christ, With the constantly changing political and immigration situation that now faces our country, many of you have asked me if St. Mary s will become a sanctuary parish. We have been in constant dialog with the Diocese of Boise concerning finding the right path to express our support for refugees and immigrants and responsible citizenship. As this conversation continues, Bishop Peter has charted a course that is balanced. We are going to walk with immigrants and refugees right down the middle between sanctuary status and the legitimate national security needs of this great nation. We have scheduled, and will schedule, meetings with interested persons to discuss and provide accurate information in this rapidly changing context. To adequately support our refugee and immigrant communities, we are reaching out to Catholic Charities of Idaho and other groups to make sure that all available services are being accessed and accurate information is being provided. Admittedly, these issues are a source of anxiety for many and fear for some. Our Catholic community will continue supporting human rights and human dignity. Please pray for this country s leaders that they enact just laws and public policies. ~ Fr. John Worster, Pastor A message from Fr. Faucher Readings: Ez 37: 12-14; Rom 8 8-11; John 11: 1-45 The Gospel this week is one of the most profound and important in all of the Scriptures. The raising of Lazarus from the dead was one of, if not the major reason, for the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus. The whole story is about the power of Jesus, even over death itself. I have preached and written about that for over 40 years, so today I want to talk about another aspect of this Gospel. In all of the Gospels, Jesus has family, apostles, disciples, followers, opponents, the curious, the skeptical, and others. But he only has three real friends, Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. Peter is an apostle but not really a friend, and John is beloved, but not really a friend. Maybe Judas, but that is not clear at all. No, the only real friends of Jesus are these three in Bethany. This seems to be the one place where Jesus could go, kick back, have a glass of Egyptian beer or some wine, and watch some sports action in the street. Is this important? Yes, it is very important. There is a strong temptation to make Jesus only the Son of God, a mythical figure, without any real humanity. Jesus is both God AND human. It is important because the total humanity of Jesus requires that he can have friends. This weekend, read all of the profound things about this Gospel passage and contemplate them. Then get together with some friends, kick back, and watch some sports. Good friends are essential to good health, both physical health and spiritual health. Next week we begin Holy Week. Su amigo y servidor ~ Padre Jesús Camacho Our God is a living God and a life-giving God. Jesus came "that we might have life and have it abundantly" (Jn 10,10). Jesus brings life where there is death. One of the worst forms of death is mortal sin. That is why we call it mortal, because it gives death. I quote from the teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church #1850: Sin is an offense to God: "Against you, I alone have I sinned, and done what is evil in your site. (Ps 51: 6). Sin rises up against the love that God has for us and takes our hearts from Him. As the first sin, it is a disobedience, a rebellion against God for the desire to become "like gods", pretending to know and determine good and evil (Gen 3: 5). Sin is thus "self-love to the contempt of God" (St. Augustine, De Civitate Dei, (pp. 14 & 28). By this proud exaltation of self, sin is diametrically opposed to the obedience of Jesus who accomplishes salvation "When a person repents and confesses his sin, God returns the life he had lost through sin; that is to say, he/she is reconciled with God (cf. Phil 2: 6-9). That is why in the Sacrament of Reconciliation we experience the power and mercy of God. Your friend and servant ~ Father Jesús Camacho
