Advent Lutheran Church Pastor Anita R. Warner Lee Tyler, Parish Associate 16870 Murphy Avenue, Morgan Hill (408) 779-3551 - Office www.advent-lutheran.org WELCOME Thank you for worshiping with us today. If you are visiting, please fill out a guest card and place it in the offering plate or in the basket in the entry area to help us welcome you. Please introduce yourself to others near you and to the pastor. We hope you can join us again soon. NURSERY CARE Nursery care for infants and toddlers is available in Berkland Fellowship Hall directly behind the entry area. Children are welcome and included at worship; feel free to walk with them in the back of the worship area if they become noisy or restless. COMMUNION Baptized persons who believe that through the bread and wine we receive Christ's body and blood for our forgiveness are invited to communion. The center ring of glasses contains white grape juice. Gluten free bread is available. PRAYER MINISTER Prayer ministers are available for individual prayer during communion and after the service at the front right corner area of the sanctuary. PRAYER CHAIN If you would like some of Advent s people to join you in prayer you may contact Jane Osumi at janeybugo@yahoo.com. You may also write a prayer request on the guest card and leave it in the offering plate or in the basket on welcome table in the gathering area. HEARING ASSISTANCE UNITS Hearing enhancement equipment is available in the sound booth in the back corner of the sanctuary.

Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost August 19, 2018 We greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whoever you are and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome in this community celebrating God s Spirit in the world. God s grace meets us in the water and Word, and in the bread and wine. We are here to know the touch of God s forgiveness and love and to hear God s calling in our lives. Please introduce yourself to others here and to the pastor. We invite you to complete the Guest card in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate as a reminder of your presence with us in worship today. GATHERING Wisdom prepares a feast, sets her table, and invites all to come and eat her bread and drink her wine. The first chapter of John s gospel owes much to the biblical tradition that imagined Wisdom as existing before anything was created and having a role in the work of creation. Christ, the wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:24), today invites us to eat his flesh and drink his blood. John s gospel includes no account of the institution of the Lord s supper, but here we can't help hearing Jesus words as an invitation to the meal of bread and wine we share. Prelude and Welcome Variations on HANOVER Michael Burkhardt Hymn Oh, Worship the King next page Greeting The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 2

Prayer of the Day Let us pray. Ever-loving God, your Son gives himself as living bread for the life of the world. Fill us with such a knowledge of his presence that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life to serve you continually, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated. 5

WORD Reading Proverbs 9:1-6 printed on back Wisdom is portrayed as a woman who invites people to partake of her banquet. Just as ordinary food is necessary for physical life, Wisdom s food insight and understanding is necessary for fullness of life with God. Partaking of Wisdom s banquet is the way to life. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 34 Those Who Seek The Lord next page The Cantor sings the Refrain the first time alone, then the congregation repeats the Refrain with the Cantor; the Cantor sings the verses. Reading Ephesians 5:15-20 printed on back True wisdom integrates our new reality in Christ with our Christian fellowship and daily conduct. Because we are filled with the Spirit, Christians regularly rejoice together, give thanks to God for one another, and care for one another. In this way we revere our Lord Jesus Christ. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Please stand as you are able. Gospel Acclamation The Cantor sings the acclamation alone, the congregation repeats along with the Cantor. 6

Those Who Seek The Lord 7

Gospel Announcement The holy gospel according to John, the sixth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord..Gospel John 6:51-58 printed on back In John s gospel, the feeding of the five thousand leads to extended teaching in which Jesus identifies himself as the true bread of life. Finally, in these verses, he makes a connection that would not be understood until after his death, in light of the church s celebration of holy communion. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Children s Message Pastor Anita Sermon Silence for reflection When the music begins, stand to sing the hymn of the day. Pastor Anita Warner Hymn of the Day Praise the Source of Faith and Learning next page Prayers of the Church Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. 8

Third Quarter Mission Project For the third quarter, Advent Lutheran has selected Lutheran World Relief (LWR) as our third quarter mission project. LWR is providing direct support to the families who are currently displaced by the war in their country. The last time we gave support to this organization, it was to help refugees who were here in the U.S. This time we are assisting those people who are still in the Middle East. Please consider helping these families who have been affected by war and conflict.
