Jim and Betty Elliott A Story of Forgiveness Jim Elliott, and his wife, Betty, were missionaries to a group of people called the Auca Indians in Equador in the 1950 s. This people group had never heard the name of Christ before, so they did not know what it meant to accept him as Savior and Lord. One of Jim s childhood dreams was to tell the story of Jesus to groups of people who had never heard of him. The Auca Indians were a vicious and violent group of people, and they often killed their friends and families, not just strangers or enemies. They were lost and without hope when Jim and Betty heard about them. The couple, along with their missionary friends, wanted to help the Indians to know of Christ, but because of the reputation of Aucans, they decided to build homes in the jungles among a friendly tribe of Indians across the river from the Aucans. They learned the language so they would be able to communicate the message of Christ to this lost people group. They decided to fly over the Aucans in their plane and drop gifts to the Aucan people in hopes of making friends with them. This happened several times over a period of weeks and eventually an elderly man motioned for them to come down. Gradually, somewhat of a bond was built and the missionaries thought they had broken through the cultural barriers and had gained the tribe s trust. However, one night while they were in their camp, five of the missionaries were killed (including Jim Elliott) by a group of the Aucans. Jim s wife, Betty, ultimately went to live with the Aucans, sharing Christ and his forgiveness of their sins with the group, including the Aucan who killed her husband.
