Inductive Reasoning Inductive reasoning is the process of observing data, recognizing patterns, and making generalizations based on those patterns. You probably use inductive reasoning all the time without realizing it. A generalization based on inductive reasoning is called a conjecture. Consider the sequence 10, 7, 9, 6, 8, 5, 7,... Make a conjecture about the rule for generating the sequence. Then find the next three terms.
Deductive Reasoning Deductive reasoning Deductive reasoning, sometimes called deductive logic, is reasoning which uses deductive arguments to move from given statements (premises) to conclusions, which must be true if the premises are true. An example of deductive reasoning, given by Aristotle, is All men are mortal. (major premise) Socrates is a man. (minor premise) Socrates is mortal. (conclusion) An argument is valid when its conclusion must be true if its premises are true. If the premises are not true or the argument is not valid, the conclusion may or may not be true. Alternative to deductive reasoning is inductive reasoning.
