THE CHURCH VOICE William C. George, Pastor Craig B. Teer, Director of Music 301 942-4400 Web Page: www.kensingtonbaptistchurch.org ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Newsletter July-August 2018 FROM THE PASTOR Our theme as a church is The Journey Continues. We gather together for times of worship, Bible Study, fellowship, missions and service. Then we depart into the world seeking to live out our faith as fully as possible. Some days, if we are honest, are easier to live out our faith than others. Why is it that way? Maybe it is because we live in a world of constant transitions and we find it hard to adapt or keep up with all that is changing. Still, transitions are a part of the journey known as life. A journey implies that there could be a destination in mind even if the entire route may not be known. That is where the adventure sneaks in even when we have our eyes fixed on God's leading. There are always surprises along the way, even if we think we know where we are going as individuals and as the church. Simply put, the journey of life is a journey of growing and continuing in faith knowing that God is present and will help us to respond to the transitions that will surely come. Never forget that each of us is needed no matter our stage in life. You are gifted to serve and you are needed. So open the eyes of your heart and look around. How is God calling you to serve? Be on the look out for PRAYER OPPORTUNITIES this summer. God is working and we are invited to join in. This means being intentional! So please commit to pray faithfully and patiently, waiting for God to act so you can join in as God leads in His own wondrous way. God bless you as you continue the journey. Pastor Bill

JUST A THOUGHT: WALKING WITH GOD The essence of the Christian life is knowing God and walking with him. It's about sticking with him when the sky is blue and also when it's filled with clouds or choked with smoke. It's about walking with the Lord through thick and thin, and pressing on through every heartache and trial that happens to come our way. -Greg Laurie-- WORSHIP AND PRAISE This year the summer worship schedule begins on Sunday, July 1 st, in the Social Hall and goes through September 2 nd. You are asked once again to dress less formally and for comfort. Men please feel fee to forget the ties and suit/sports coat. This schedule, as in past year, will continue in effect through the first weekend in September. Don't forget that even though the choir does not rehearse during the summer months, they still help guide our worship as the sing and provide service music for our various services. Being summer, we do things a tad different as Craig would say. So, come ready to sing and praise God! AFTER WORSHIP FELLOWSHIPS Our Summer After Worship Fellowships will follow the Morning Worship Service on July 29 th and August 26 th. Plan to stay and visit over the goodies shared by the KBC family. Each family unit is asked to bring either a snack food, finger food, or fruit. Beverage is provided by the church. Volunteer hosts/hostesses will set-up for the fellowship. See you there! IMPORTANT! THE RELATIONSHIP BUILDING TEAM AND CHURCH COUNCIL ASK THAT YOU BRING FOODS THAT ARE READY TO BE SERVED FOR THE FELLOWSHIP. Please don't bring food that needs to be heated or takes a lot of preparation for the hosts and hostesses. They enjoy being a part of worship. Also, this year our July and August After Worship Fellowships food location will be in a different spot since we are worshiping in the Social Hall. Turning the oven on is not possible! Your help with bringing ready to serve foods will be a huge blessing!

WE STILL NEED SOME SUMMER AFTER WORSHIP FELLOWSHIP VOLUNTEERS! If you can help out with the July 29 th Fellowship, please be sure to sign-up in the vestibule on the sign-up sheet! Your willingness to serve as host/hostess is a real blessing. Thank you to those who have already signed up for August 26 th. We still could use one more volunteer on 8/26. THE PRIORITY OF PRAYER WILL YOU COMMIT TO PRAY?: Make a difference! Commit to daily prayer and seek to discern God's guiding presence within your life and that of KBC. Pray that KBC will be the best church for our communities in which we live and serve. Pray that KBC will grow as a blessing to the world around us. Pray that you will be able to hear his voice and respond to it in faith---moment by moment. PLEASE PRAY for one another and all those on our spoken and unspoken prayer lists. Please lift up our partner church (Iglesia La Voz de Cristo al Mundo) in prayer. Please pray for the communities in which we live and serve. Pray that our eyes and hearts will be opened to see these places as God sees them---filled with needy people. Throughout our vestibule areas we have a virtual reminder of how we might pray for God to work among the peoples of our communities surrounding KBC. Be sure and retake that walk and commit to pray! OUR HOMEBOUNDS: Continue to remember all those in our church family who are homebound or assisting family members who are homebound. In July, you are asked to especially remember Ellen Real, 4102 Decatur Avenue, Kensington, MD 20895. Ellen will be 96 on July 7 th. Send her a note or card to encourage her. In August, we ask that you especially lift up and remember Katy (Katy) Starr with a note or card. Katy's current address is Room 303B, 3618 Littledale Road, Kensington, MD 20895.

LET'S CELEBRATE: Please lift up in prayer those who have a birthday or wedding anniversary during this month. We are asking the church family to dig deep and give generously through Back to School Supplies Mission Project. Starting on July 8 th, we will have in the sanctuary vestibule a collection box to gather your generous donations of school supplies. So why not make a difference in someone else's life. Experience the joy of giving. Your generosity last year helped many children.

Since January (2017) the shelters have combined into a newly renovated facility that houses 70 women in four dormitories with two adjoining dining areas. The new women's shelter is located at 2 Taft Court, Rockville, MD (off Gude Drive). The new location enables the shelter to have just one birthday celebration for the women rather than parties for two shelters. Keeping this in mind, the Church Council and Deacons supported the idea that we host one party for 70 people each year rather than help toward two parties as we have done in the past. With this in mind, we have begun asking people to plan ahead and commit to how you are willing to help out in this important missions effort in 2018. We will need eight $10 Target Gift Cards, eight birthday cards, and 16 mylar birthday balloons. In addition we will need paper plates, napkins, ice cream, birthday cake, punch, and fruit trays that will feed a total of 70 women residents who will be at the birthday party. Monetary contributions are gladly accepted toward items needed for this birthday celebration. The party will be held for the October birthday honorees on October 6 th. How is God calling you to help out? The truth is we need a lot of volunteers. The sign-up sheet will be available from August 12 or 19 in the vestibule.

PASTOR ON VACATION: Pastor Bill and Di George will be on vacation from August 6-12. In case of an emergency, please contact your deacon or the church office (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday). Deacon Family Ministry lists are available in the vestibule. CLOSING THOUGHT As church, we have people, ministries, programs, and a beautiful building, but we are powerless without the Spirit. The Spirit is what we need most. We need the Spirit to help find the right words to tell people about God's love, and to show people God's love. We need the Spirit's guidance in knowing just what to do to help the people in need around us. J. Hawthorne (2018)
