More information is available on the table inside the outside front door of the church GOD IN CREATION I know plenty of people who find God most reliably in books, in buildings, and even in other people. I have found God in all of these places too, but the most reliable meeting place for me has always been the creation. I have always known where to go when my own flame was guttering. To lie with my back flat on the fragrant ground is to receive a transfusion of that same power that makes the green blade rise. To remember that I am dirt and to dirt I shall return is to be given my life back again. Where other people see acreage, timber and soil, and river frontage, I see God s body. Barbara Brown Taylor

2013 A Year of Heritage; Celebrating Those-of of-many Many-Decades (Herit-Age) Matthew Everett Rogers: Born 3 June 1934 in the east end of Vancouver, Matt is the oldest of four siblings. His mother and father had a homebusiness of making wooden novelty items, which Matt began helping with by age four. In 1943 they moved to Ladner, 64 th St. (then Crescent Island Rd) and continued the family business. Matt attended Ladner Elementary located beside the high school. He began work with the Pea Cannery during harvest time, starting out as a box boy at nine years old, and eventually took on mechanic roles, and going on to become a hiring and firing boss. Upon graduating high school Matt worked for a year, then took senior matriculation, following which he wrote the exam to work with the Signal Corp at the Wireless Station in Boundary Bay. He worked hard; at the Pea Viners all day, helping with the family business, and then taking the night shift at the wireless station monitoring codes during the Cold War (1955-1957). When the signals were quiet Matt studied university correspondence courses. In 1957 he began full-time studies at UBC with a group of colleagues, and after classes they each reviewed ten books daily for discussions. Matt s focus area was history. Matt graduated with his Bachelor of Education in 1961. That same spring, as a way of initiating a re-acquaintance with Patricia Husband, Matt mailed her a piece entitled The Voice of the Library, a 20- page rumination he wrote while studying at the UBC library. Their first date was after a wedding at Ladner United Church, for which Pat sang. They were married that June, and in September 1961 Matt began his 28 years of teaching at North Delta Secondary. After years of reading and studying and thinking about religion, he began attending church. Matt and Pat have four children and 8 grandchildren. Matt is an inquisitive, intellectual believer, questioning until he is satisfied. He has taught Sunday School, chaired the Stewards a number of times, and chaired the Building Committee for the Christian Education Building that was built 1971.

He has been volunteering in Delta for 50 years; coaching and refereeing sports, serving on Delta Council Committees, Delta Museum and Archives, Kirkland House, and as a Trustee at LUC. He received the Volunteer Service Award for Delta 2012. Matt at pea viners. Circa 1959 Pat and Matt 1961 Matt. 1996 Matt. 2013
