Reflection on Today s Readings: Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... 6th Sunday In Ordinary time - Jesus commandment is that His disciples love one another, even to the point of laying down their lives, if necessary. What gifts of myself my skills and talents, my time and resources will best demonstrate my love for God s people? FOCUS: Christ offers us His compassion and mercy, grace and healing - In Christ we find not just compassion and mercy, but healing and grace. It is Christ s great desire that we come to Him and bring before Him all that might keep us from experiencing God s love. Placing our faith in Christ brings healing, wholeness and salvation. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Today s first reading spells out the communal rules that relate to those who suffer from leprosy. In the second reading, the faithful are reminded that they must do everything for the glory of God. Jesus, in the Gospel, demonstrates His great compassion for a leper who comes to Him for a cure. He heals the man. LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER For those who are ill, and those in need of our prayers Please let us know about the condition of those we re praying for. FACT OF LIFE A Thread for Weaving Life Expectant parents deserve to know that a child with Down syndrome can love, laugh, learn, work, feel hope and excitement, make friends, and create joy for others. These things are beautiful precisely because they transcend what we expect. They witness to the truth that every child with special needs has a value that matters eternally.... The real choice in accepting or rejecting a child with special needs is never between some imaginary perfection or imperfection. None of us is perfect. No child is perfect. The real choice in accepting or rejecting a child with special needs is between love and unlove; between courage and cowardice; between trust and fear. That s the choice we face when it happens in our personal experience. And that s the choice we face as a society in deciding which human lives we will treat as valuable, and which we will not. (Archbishop Charles Chaput, Cardinal O Connor Conference on Life, Jan. 22, 2012 ) Prayer for Life: O Heavenly Father, Help us to realize that your Divine Spirit alone can change hearts and minds so that all your human creatures may enjoy the fullness of life you intended for them. We pray this prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen. You fill me with the joy of salvation Catholic Climate AMBASSADOR SPOTLIGHT - Translating Church Teaching into Action on Climate Change: Mark Potosnak, Ph.D. - Mark Potosnak, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Environmental Sciences Program at DePaul University in Chicago, was recently featured in DePaul s Newsline for his work as a Catholic Climate Ambassador. Dr. Potosnak discusses how an authentically Catholic approach to creation care and climate change helps him to avoid political and ideological tensions when giving presentations. Additionally, Mark says that he has found the St. Francis Pledge to be a great tool for Catholics wishing to take action on the Church s climate change message: When I spoke on this issue before I had received the Ambassador training... I found that [the positive reception Church teaching] wasn t translating into action. The St. Francis Pledge is helpful for getting people to think about what to do next. Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith LENT 2012 Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which falls on Wed., February 22nd, this year. The Catholic Community around the world follows these general regulations during Lent. ABSTINENCE Is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition. Women s Faith Sharing - Women s Faith Sharing will provide an opportunity to learn through Scripture and from each other how to be the Christian Women God created us to be. The purpose of Women s Faith Sharing Ministry is to: Strengthen each woman s Baptismal call to Holiness. To provide opportunity for women to have a time of fellowship with God and each other. To provide an opportunity to make new friends, and strengthen relationships with old friends, as we build each other up in the Body of Christ. To provide a place to develop a sense of self-worth and spirituality. This month it is on Thurs., Feb. 23rd, 10:15-11:30 AM, Rectory Conference Room (downstairs). Questions?
