Archdiocese of Southwark THE CATHOLIC CERTIFICATE IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES (CCRS)

Transcription:

Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector s booth. Follow me, Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him. While Jesus was having dinner at Levi s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners? On hearing this, Jesus said to them, It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. Biblical teaching in modern times The Cornhill Training Course

The Cornhill Training Course Belfast Glasgow London Est. 1991 What is the Cornhill Training Course? The aim of the course is to train preachers. We believe that faithful, prayerful expository preaching is God s chosen instrument to build Christ s church and to change lives and nations. Alongside this primary aim we train men and women to teach the Bible in other contexts such as youth and children s work and women s ministries. Our desire is to serve local churches by training the preachers and Bible teachers of the future. The Cornhill Training Course will help you to show the relevance of the Bible today. Our course equips Christians to understand the Bible accurately, teach it effectively and apply it appropriately. What do we do each week? WE STUDY THE BIBLE TOGETHER Mornings begin with a short bible exposition, given by a student, followed by a time of prayer. Key individual books of the bible are studied in depth. An introduction is given to biblical theology, history and geography. WE STUDY PRINCIPLES OF EXPOSITORY PREACHING Principles of biblical preaching are outlined at the start of the year. Throughout the course we look at how to preach different types of books within the Bible: Old Testament law; Old Testament narrative; poetry and the wisdom literature; prophets; gospels; epistles; apocalyptic. WE EXPOUND BIBLE PASSAGES This is done in small groups, with constructive feedback from a staff member or experienced minister. Some talks will be short outlines of passages of scripture, aimed at determining their meaning in context, while others will be longer talks.

WE STUDY CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE Christian ministry is rooted in theological convictions about God and man. The course provides teaching on central evangelical truths. WE CONSIDER PRACTICAL MINISTRY MATTERS The biblical principles learnt on the course need to be applied in various contexts. A range of people involved in ministry come in to help with this process. WHAT ELSE DOES CORNHILL OFFER? The potential for close and supportive fellowship with others wanting to serve Christ in the ministry of the Word and prayer. Informal contact with visiting ministers and the teaching staff. Visiting lecturers and speakers both locally and from England, who will help us with further Bible teaching and other practical skills in Christian ministry. All students will benefit from a placement with a local church in which they can exercise their Bible teaching skills.

The Cornhill Training Course Who? Where? When? The location of the course is in East Belfast, in the halls of Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church on the Newtownards Road. Teaching takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for three terms totaling 30 weeks for those doing the course full-time. Wednesdays are study days in term time. Those doing the course parttime over two years attend on Mondays and Tuesdays in the first year and Thursdays and Fridays in the second year. WHO CAN TAKE THE CORNHILL TRAINING COURSE? The course is open to men and women with evangelical convictions, from all Christian denominations. We are looking for those with both a hunger and a gifting for Bible-teaching ministry. We want to train students who are hoping to do Bible teaching work in the future either at home or abroad. For many the course will be an important part of testing their suitability for this calling and may lead on to further training or service in some form of full-time ministry. We are looking for those who have had some experience of teaching the Bible, either in preaching or (more often) in smallgroup contexts or youth and children s work. The course provides an ideal grounding in Bible-teaching for church apprentices, as well as for those who already have a regular ministry in their own churches. WHO TEACHES AT CORNHILL BELFAST? The course Director is Moore Casement, who was minister of 2nd Saintfield Presbyterian Church from 2002-08 and prior to that was Assistant Minister at Hamilton Road Presbyterian, Bangor and Knock Presbyterian. Moore is assisted by a wide range of local ministers and others involved in different aspects of Christian ministry. A number of guest lecturers, such as David Jackman and Rico Tice, who teach at Cornhill London, also come over to teach in Belfast.

The Cornhill Training Course How do I apply? Cornhill Belfast 66 Kings Road Belfast BT5 6JL Application forms are available from the office or directly from the website. Applicants are interviewed before places are offered, and references will need to be supplied. Further information, including fees and details of term dates, is available from the website, as well as by contacting the Director at info@cornhillbelfast.org or by telephone at 028 9070 1989. It has been a great year of learning principles of teaching the Bible, whether that is with children or adults, in church or outside. I believe that the principles I have learned will stay with me for the duration of my ministry. One very challenging aspect has been God refining me personally as I study his word on a daily basis it is such a blessing to spend so much time in the word. It has been a year well spent in preparation for overseas work. Michael. Former student I was already looking at taking a career break to investigate the gifts God has given me, and Cornhill was the perfect opportunity to study the amazing claims of God s word. I highly recommend this course to anyone who has an interest in learning sound bible teaching, who is currently or potentially engaged in any form of teaching ministry, and for those who want to consider God s call on their lives. David. Former student
