The people remain seated for the Lessons and stand for the Canticles. THE FIRST LESSON 1 John 2:18-29 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. CANTICLE Sung by choir Magnificat Sarah MacDonald (b. 1968) My soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, * and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; * he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, * as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; * As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. THE SECOND LESSON Mark 6:30-44 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. CANTICLE Sung by the choir Nunc dimittis Sarah MacDonald Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, * according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, * which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, * and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; * As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 3
The people remain standing for the Apostles Creed THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE PRAYERS SALUTATION Officiant: The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit. Officiant: Let us pray. The People kneel THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE SUFFRAGES BCP, p. 122 4
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of thy people; Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he doth lead; who, with thee and the Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. A COLLECT FOR AID AGAINST PERILS Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. A PRAYER FOR MISSION Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give thine angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for thy love s sake. The people stand to sing the Office Hymn. OFFICE HYMN Sung by all Lift your voice rejoicing, Mary Fisk of Gloucester Hymnal 190 5
The people sit for the Anthem. ANTHEM Tomorrow shall be my dancing day Traditional Carol; arr. Richard Shephard (b. 1949) Tomorrow shall be my dancing day: I would my true love did so chance to see the legend of my play, to call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; this have I done for my true love. For thirty pence, Judas me sold: His covetousness for to advance. Mark whom I kiss, the same behold: the same is he shall lead the dance. Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; this have I done for my true love. Before Pilate the Jews me brought, where Barrabus had deliverance, they scourged me and set me at naught, judged me to die, to lead the dance. Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; this have I done for my true love. Then on the cross hanged I was when a spear to my heart did glance; there issued forth both water and blood, to call my love to my dance. Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; this have I done for my true love. Then up to heaven I did ascend, where now I dwell in sure substance on the right hand of God, that man may come with me and join my dance. Sing O my love, O my love, my love, my love; this have I done for my true love. The Officiant then says Let us pray. The people kneel. INTERCESSIONS AND THANKSGIVINGS THE GENERAL THANKSGIVING Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. A PRAYER OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. 6
CONCLUDING VERSICLE AND RESPONSE THE GRACE THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen. All stand to sing the Recessional Hymn. RECESSIONAL HYMN Sung by all The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended St. Clement Hymnal 24 Please be seated during the playing of the voluntary. VOLUNTARY For the Little Organ Book: IX Charles Wood (1866 1926) MUSIC NOTES The organ voluntaries played this evening come from a lovely little collection of pieces written in Memory of Sir Hubert Parry. At his funeral in St. Paul's Cathedral, London, in October 1918, a few of his friends made a small wreath of melodies, which were woven together and played. "The Little Organ Book" serves as a larger wreath, in loving memory of him. The title of the book was suggested by the original heading on his own piece (played as this evening's opening voluntary), "For the Little Organ Book." Sarah MacDonald, composer of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, is Director of the Ely Cathedral Girl's Choir, at Ely Cathedral, a place held warmly in the hearts of many of Trinity's choristers, after singing Evensong there several years ago. Ms. MacDonald is a sought after choir clinician and organist, known throughout the UK, Canada and the United States. This setting of Evening Canticles works nicely for our boys and girls voices, giving them the opportunity to sing these beautiful, ancient canticles. 7
ABOUT OUR CHOIR Trinity's dedicated Boys & Girls Choir is for choristers in fourth grade through high school. They rehearse for ninety minutes each week and sing for a variety of services throughout the year and consistently expand their repertoire and quality of singing. Choristers sing Anglican chant, Gregorian Chant, Spirituals, and many of the great treble anthems from the substantial Anglican choral repertoire, in addition to learning music theory and about the liturgies in which they participate. This year, the choir sang in Trinity's first Choral Festival, under the direction of world renowned Dr. James Litton. This coming July, three choristers will participate, for the first time, in the Royal School of Music Carolina Summer Course. They will be in residence at Duke University for a week and have the thrilling opportunity to sing with fifty other girls daily, in Duke Chapel. If you know a boy or girl who wants to sing excellent music, please consider joining our choir!
