INTROIT sung by the choir Hear My Prayer Henry Purcell (1659-95) SENTENCES, INTRODUCTION & OPENING PRAYER Stand HYMN (NEH 117) The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; The Passover of gladness, The Passover of God! From death to life eternal, From earth unto the sky, Our Christ hath brought us over With hymns of victory. Our hearts be pure from evil, That we may see aright The Lord in rays eternal Of resurrection-light; And, listening to his accents, May hear so calm and plain His own All hail, and, hearing, May raise the victor strain. Now let the heavens be joyful, And earth her song begin, The round world keep high triumph, And all that is therein; Let all things seen and unseen Their notes of gladness blend, For Christ the Lord hath risen, Our joy that hath no end.
Sit READING John 14.1-6 Read by Billy Brooke Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. TRIBUTES Dr Martin Brett Dr Michael Wood (Caian) Stand HYMN (NEH 431) O Thou who camest from above, The pure celestial fire to impart, Kindle a flame of sacred love On the mean altar of my heart. There let it for thy glory burn With inextinguishable blaze, And trembling to its source return, In humble prayer, and fervent praise.
Jesus, confirm my heart's desire To work, and speak, and think for thee; Still let me guard the holy fire, And still stir up thy gift in me. Ready for all thy perfect will, My acts of faith and love repeat, Till death thy endless mercies seal, And make my sacrifice complete. Sit READING from Mansfield Park by Jane Austen Read by Mary Brooke Lang Their own inclinations ascertained, there were no difficulties behind, no drawbacks of poverty or parent. It was a match which Sir Thomas s wishes had even forestalled. Sick of ambitious and mercenary connections, prizing more and more the sterling good of principle and temper, and chiefly anxious to bind by the strongest securities all that remained to him of domestic felicity, he had pondered with genuine satisfaction on the more than possibility of the two young friends finding their mutual consolation in each other for all that had occurred of disappointment to either; and the joyful consent which met Edmund s application, the high sense of having realised a great acquisition in the promise of Fanny for a daughter, formed just such a contrast with his early opinion on the subject when the poor little girl s coming had been first agitated, as time is for ever producing between the plans and decision of mortals, for their own instruction, and their neighbours entertainment. ADDRESS Phil Brooke & Patrick Brooke
CHOIR Heaven O BEAUTEOUS GOD, uncircumscribed treasure Of an eternal pleasure, Thy Throne is seated far Above the highest Star, Where thou prepar st a glorious place Within the brightness of thy face For every spirit To inherit That builds his hopes on thy merit, And loves thee with a holy charity. What ravish d heart, Seraphick tongue or eyes, Clear as the mornings rise, Can speak, or think, or see That bright eternity? Where the great King s transparent Throne Is of an intire Jasper stone: There the eye O th Chrysolite, And a sky Of Diamonds, Rubies, Chrysoprase, And above all, thy holy face Makes an eternal Clarity. When thou thy jewels up dost binde: that day Remember us, we pray, That where the Beryl lyes And the Crystal, bove the skyes, There thou may st appoint us place Within the brightness of thy face; And our Soul In the Scroll Of life and blissfulness enrowl, That we may praise thee to eternity. Allelujah! Words: Jeremy Taylor DD (Fellow 1633 1636) Music: Charles Wood MusD (Fellow 1894 1926)
SERMON The Revd Dr Cally Hammond PRAYERS These end with the Lord s Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Stand
HYMN (NEH 252) The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended, The darkness falls at thy behest; To thee our morning hymns ascended, Thy praise shall sanctify our rest. We thank thee that thy Church unsleeping, While earth rolls onward into light, Through all the world her watch is keeping, And rests not now by day or night. As o'er each continent and island The dawn leads on another day, The voice of prayer is never silent, Nor dies the strain of praise away. The sun that bids us rest is waking Our brethren 'neath the western sky, And hour by hour fresh lips are making Thy wondrous doings heard on high. So be it, Lord; thy throne shall never, Like earth's proud empires, pass away; Thy kingdom stands, and grows for ever, Till all thy creatures own thy sway. Remain standing for the PRAYER OF COMMENDATION The whole congregation is invited to follow the procession promptly out of the chapel and gather in Caius Court. During the Procession part of Psalm 139 will be sung.
At the Gate of Honour is sung Nunc Dimittis (in E minor, Charles Wood) LORD, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace : according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen : thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared : before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles : and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
