Depart the airport for Tel Aviv, known as the city that never sleeps, with its centers of culture, recreation and national history, great beaches and fine stores. Check into the hotel. Overnight: Tel Aviv DAY THREE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2018 THE CHALLENGE OF INDEPENDENCE Breakfast at the hotel. Orientation to the program followed by a dialogue with scholar Paul Liptz of Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew Union College: Israeli Society @ 2018: Stroll down Rothschild Boulevard to view examples of the intriguing Bauhaus-style architecture from the 1930s. DAY FOUR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2018 SHABBAT IN TEL AVIV Breakfast at the hotel. Free Shabbat in Tel Aviv with an opportunity to: Take in the grand art collection at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Meander through the Old City of Jaffa. Explore the colorful and historic Neve Zedek Visit some of Tel Aviv's legendary Art Galleries. Crash the waves of the Mediterranean Sea. Wander through the Tachana, Tel Aviv's renovated old train station, now a center of boutiques and good food, and one of Tel Aviv's blooming hot spots. Walk or bike the Blue Route in Tel Aviv, with its beautiful coastline and Mediterranean atmosphere, from the Jaffa Ridge in the south to Tel Aviv Port in the north. Guided walk with a local city guide through the streets of old Tel Aviv to view examples of the intriguing Bauhaus-style architecture from the 1930s. Check out of the hotel, depart Tel Aviv and drive north along the coastal plain to Caesarea, one of the Land of Israel's most important cities in the Roman Period. Visit the Herodian Theater and the excavations along the Mediterranean shore, concluding with a visit to the ruined 900-year-old Crusader town. Visit a Druze village in the Carmel Mountains for a window into the unique world of the Israeli Druze community, including a home-hospitality lunch. Visit Akko (Acre), a UNESCO Heritage Site, for a multi-layered experience from the days of the Crusades through contemporary Israel, including guided visits to: The restored Crusaders' Fortress. The colorful Akko shuk (market). OR Drive to Rosh Hanikra, at the northern tip of Israel's Mediterranean coastline. DAY SIX MONDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2018 SERENITY AND SECURITY ON THE GOLAN Breakfast at the hotel. Walk through the Tel Dan Nature Reserve, located on the largest tributary of the Jordan River, and explore the ruins of the great Biblical city of Dan. Explore Israel's security situation on the Golan Heights. Overlooking the Hula Valley from former Syrian fortifications, discuss the challenges Israel faced leading up to the Six-Day War. The panoramic views from Bental (overlooking the abandoned Syrian town of Kuneitra) give sharp insights into Israel's security situation on the Golan Heights, and the enormous challenges it faced in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Wine Tasting at a local winery on the Golan Heights. Lunch on own en route. Explore Tsfat, a center of Jewish mysticism for hundreds of years and a contemporary artists' colony, including: Guided visit to the Ari, Caro or Abuhav Synagogues, each with its great stories and mystical messages. A stroll through the quaint Artists' Colony, shop in the galleries and crafts shops and engage in dialogues with local artisans inspired by the messages of Kabbalah. Return to the kibbutz hotel. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight: Kibbutz Hotel, Upper Galilee DAY SEVEN TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2018 WHERE THE PAST AND PRESENT INTERTWINE Breakfast at the hotel. Check out of the hotel and depart the Upper Galilee, driving to the city of Nazareth; stop at Precipice for a grand view of the Jezreel Valley (and its many Biblical stories) and of Jesus' own home town. Visit Sindyannna of Galilee, a unique non-profit organization led by a team of Arab and Jewish women working to create social change from the ground up, including spices workshop. Lunch on own en route. Drive along the Trans-Israel Highway for a close-up view of the Security Barrier' along the seam zone between Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Upon arrival in Jerusalem stop for an overlook of the Old City from atop the Mount of Olives. Walk through the ancient Jewish cemetery, via the Dominus Flevit Church and down to the Garden of Gethsemane and the Kidron Valley. Check into the hotel. National Museum, National Identity: Visit the renewed and wonderfully creative Israel Museum, with its wide-ranging and eclectic collection, from Archaeology and the Dead Sea Scrolls, to Jewish Life and Art, European art, contemporary Israeli art and the open-air model of Jerusalem in the Second Temple period. DAY EIGHT WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2018 HISTORY AND SPIRITUALITY IN JERUSALEM Breakfast at the hotel. Proceed to the Old City and explore the excavations at the City of David, the very core of ancient Jerusalem, followed by a walk through the recently opened Second Temple-period tunnel under the walls of the Old City, emerging in the Jerusalem Archaeological Park to visit Robinson's Arch and the Southern Wall steps where Jewish pilgrims entered the Temple Mount 2,000 years ago. Stop at the Kotel (Western Wall) and experience the special atmosphere of this holy site and then walk through the Western Wall Tunnel, the underground continuation of the Western Wall alongside the Temple Mount. Lunch on own in the Old City and then walk through the Christian Quarter, including stops along the Via Dolorosa and a visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Continue to the Jewish Quarter for visits to archaeological treasures and other highlights, among them: A walk along the Rooftops of the Old City for a behind-thescenes look at the various communities in Jerusalem and how they live alongside each other. The Cardo, the main street of Jerusalem in the 6th Hurva Square, the central square of the Jewish Quarter. One Mountain, Three Religions: Zion and the Religious Challenge: Finish the day's touring with a visit to the traditional burial site of King David, a 1948-67 Temple Mount observation point, the Dormition Abbey, a mosque and the Room of the Last Supper. DAY TEN FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2018 INTO THE DESERT, MASADA & THE DEAD SEA Breakfast at the hotel. Descend to the Dead Sea Basin and ascend by cable-car or walk up the Snake Path to Masada, Herod's mountain palace and the site of the Jewish Zealots' last stand against the Roman Legionnaires; discuss Masada's role as a symbol of Jewish defence and its current significance in modern Israel. Lunch on own at Masada. Experience the weightlessness of the Dead Sea as you float in its waters at the Kalia or Neve Midbar Beach. Return to Jerusalem, driving by Qumran, the area where the Dead Sea Sect established a community, and the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Free time. Time to freshen up before Shabbat. Witness how Shabbat is welcomed in at the Kotel. Dinner on own, perhaps at the Old Train Station Plaza, with its fashionable restaurants featuring local and international cuisine. Overnight: Jerusalem DAY ELEVEN SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2018 SHABBAT IN JERUSALEM Breakfast at the hotel. Free Shabbat in Jerusalem for an opportunity to explore (on own): The Old City Ramparts for a walk along the ancient walls of the city The Tower of David Museum of the History of Jerusalem, for a walk through the city's history - with observation points, an animated film and visual and audio-visual aids - from the time of Abraham to the end of the British Mandate over Palestine. Wander in the Arab Bazaar. Wrap up and late check out from the hotel. Farewell dinner at one of Jerusalem's great restaurants.
