Christ, the wisdom of God, today invites us to eat his flesh and drink his blood. John s gospel includes no account of the institution of the Lord s supper, but here we can't help hearing Jesus words as an invitation to the meal of bread and wine we share. A Story that Invites Us All invitations to stand or kneel are for those who are able. SOUNDING OF THE PU Please gather as the sounding of the conch shell calls us to worship PRELUDE... Instrumental Group SINGING BOWL During the ringing of the bowl, please center your thoughts on Makua God the Creator, Keiki Kane Jesus Christ our Redeemer, and Uhane Hemolele the Holy Spirit our Comforter. 3 CALL TO WORSHIP P: Wade into the waters of love; All: step into the rivers of blessing. L: Here, find the renewing streams of mercy; All: here, taste the wonder of God s goodness. P: Feel the waters life; All: know the joy of baptism. L: See the springs of eternal life; All: we will sing of the triumph of God s blessing. WELCOME SHARING OF THE PEACE AND ALOHA P: The peace of God is always with you. All: And also with you. REMEMBRANCE OF BAPTISM L: God is with you. All: And also with you. L: Let us give thanks to God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: When we were joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we were clothed with God s mercy and forgiveness. All: Together let us remember our baptism. P: Blessed are you, O God of grace. From age to age you made water a sign of your presence among us. In the beginning your Spirit brooded over the waters and you created the world by your word, All: calling forth life in which you took delight. P: You led Israel safely through the Red Sea into the land of promise, All: and in the waters of the Jordan, you proclaimed Jesus your beloved one. P: By water and the Spirit you adopted us as your daughters and sons, 4

All: making us heirs of the promise and servants of God. P: Through this water remind us of our baptism. Shower us with your Spirit, that your forgiveness, grace, and love may be renewed in our lives. All: To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. BAPTISMAL RENEWAL P: Children of God, do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: to live among God s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord s Supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? All: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. P: All water is holy, All: Blessed by the Creator. P: From birth waters to mighty rivers of justice, All: From a refreshing sip to the renewal of a quiet stream, P: All water is holy, All: A sign that we have passed through troubles, been refreshed by a gift we did not earn, sustained by a love poured over us. P: This water is a rainbow sign of God's continuing love at work in us and through us. All: May God bless us and this gift of water. OPENING SONG... READING... Proverbs 9:1-6 Wisdom is portrayed as a woman who invites people to partake of her banquet. Just as ordinary food is necessary for physical life, Wisdom s food insight and understanding is necessary for fullness of life with God. Partaking of Wisdom s banquet is the way to life. Wisdom has built her house; she has set up her seven pillars. She has prepared her food, decanted her wine, and set her table. She has sent out her household staff to call from a spot overlooking the city, Whoever wants enlightenment, step this way! she says, inviting all who lack common sense. Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine which I have prepared for you. Abandon your foolishness that you may live, and walk the path of understanding. L: Word of God, word of life. All: Thanks be to God. Please Stand GOSPEL ACCLAMATION... Thy Word Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet And a light unto my path Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet And a light unto my path P: The Gospel is a reading from John chapter 6 beginning with verse 51. 9 Verse 2 I will not forget Your love for me and yet My heart forever is wandering Jesus be my guide And hold me to Your side I will love You to the end. GOSPEL... Matthew 15:10-28 In John s gospel, the feeding of the five thousand leads to extended teaching in which Jesus identifies himself as the true bread of life. Finally, in these verses, he makes a connection that would not be understood until after his death, in light of the church s celebration of holy communion. Jesus said, I myself am the living bread come down from heaven. If any eat of this bread, they will live forever; the bread I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. The temple authorities then began to argue with one another. How can he give us his flesh to eat? Jesus replied, The truth of the matter is, if you don t eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Chosen One, you won t have life in you. Those who do eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Everyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I live in them. Just as the living Abba God sent me and I have life because of Abba God, so those who feed on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. It s not the kind of bread that your ancestors ate, for they died; whoever eats this kind of bread will live forever. P: The Gospel, the good news of God. GOSPEL RESPONSE... Thy Word 10

L: May these gifts be bread and blessing for a world in need of your grace. All: Amen. THE PRAYERS L: Trusting in our loving and almighty God who abundantly provides the bread of life to all who hunger, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. O Lord, you build your church, the body of Christ, and sustain it with living bread. Let wisdom guide your church, and teach all its members the way of righteousness. God of mercy, All: hear our prayer. L: O Lord, we thank you for the diversity of the nations. Shower your wisdom and mercy upon all leaders and citizens. Give us all the courage to seek peace and pursue it. God of mercy, All: hear our prayer. L: O Lord, send calm and perseverance to those who are in trouble or who live daily with great stress. Fill them with your Spirit and satisfy them with your presence. God of mercy, All: hear our prayer. L: God of all, hear now the prayers of our heart said either silently or aloud. Here other prayers may be offered. 13 14

L: God of mercy, All: hear our prayers. L: Almighty and loving God, we look to you in hope and trust, knowing that you will do far more than we can ask or imagine, through Jesus Christ, our Savior. All: Amen. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER L: God is with you. All: And also with you. L: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to God. L: Let us give thanks to God. All: It is right to give thanks and praise. P: God of blessing, we thank you always for making us in your image to serve the peace of all creation. You shared your name with our mothers and fathers: All: Sarah and Abraham, who left their home and became a blessing to all nations; P: Moses and Miriam, who went through sea and wilderness to the place of revelation; All: Deborah and Samson, who gave hope and justice to a people ruled by fear; P: Ruth and Jonah, who went to foreign soil All: and found a God who loves the stranger. P: From our ancestors in faith came Jesus, the son of promise to fulfill the law, embody your love and draw all people to himself. He accepted death to break its fearful hold; he was raised to life to share it in abundance; he comes again to break the bread and pour the wine of hope. Therefore, with all the people whose story you have shared, with all the people of faith in every part of the world, we share the song of love which sounds from all eternity: All: Holy, holy, God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. P: We ask that your Holy Spirit will fall upon these gifts that these fragile, earthly things may be to us the body and blood of our Lord and brother, Jesus Christ; who, on the night that he was betrayed, gathered with his faltering friends for a meal that tasted of freedom. Calling them to his table, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me. In the same way after supper, he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me. As on that night, so here and now he offers himself in touch and taste beyond all words can hold. All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P: Therefore we come in grace and hope, responding to your call and the promise that echoes from the dawn of all time. May mind and heart be held by your self-giving love All: as we stand before the cross, approach the empty tomb and praise the one whose name is lifted high above all earthly power. P: Inspire us with hope that one day death and greed will be no more, and people without number will come from east, west, north and south to share the kingdom meal. All: We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom and in whom in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory be yours, Mother of all blessings, for ever and ever. Amen. 15 16

THE LORD S PRAYER P: Now with the confidence of children of God, let us pray. All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Come to the table of grace. Come to taste the bread of heaven. All: We come to see that God is good. P: Come to receive God s blessings All: and know that our lives are restored. P: Come to the table of grace; All: for here we are fed with the bread that satisfies our need for mercy; P: here we partake of the wine that quenches All: our thirst for love and forgiveness.
