THE RETURN OF CHRIST - Series - Lesson # 1 Know the Truth and It Will Set You Free Intro: th A. During the weekend of May 20 2011, I was asked to preach a gospel meeting on the subject of the return of Christ, it was a weekend that marked a critical point in the lives of many - with the teaching st that Christ is going to return May 21 2011 - it gave us less than twelve hours before the event took place - if that teaching was true and the scriptures did reveal the date and time of Christ s return to earth. 1. At the beginning of the lesson I made this comment - However, having said that let me say with full assurance from the scriptures that I am fully prepared to speak on the remaining topics of this meeting - believing the truth of God s Word and not the falsehoods of men - Psalm 118:8 is the center verse of the Bible and it fully reveals where out trust should lie. a. Psalm 118:8 ---- 8 It is better to trust in the LORD Than to put confidence in man. B. Having said all that let me say that in this study on the Return of Christ I want you to challenge every word that I speak - making sure that it is the Word of God and not the Word of man - Acts 17:11 ---- 11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. 1. I also would love to have you write down questions and concerns that you would like me to answer. 2. Recognizing that it is an impossibility for me to cover every related issue with this subject, and especially it is an impossibility for me to give my completed understanding on the Books of Daniel and Revelation in this short time frame that we have together. C. So, as we get down to the topic at hand let me begin by giving an illustration of what my approach to this study is going to be. 1. The United States Federal Reserve has a division called the counterfeit division whose sole purpose is to recognize counterfeiting of the United States Currency. 2. As we are all aware of the US monetary system has a number of built in features that are clearly visible to the naked eye and then there are those features that can only be seen under a careful observation with a magnifying glass or microscope. 3. With millions of dollars been counterfeited every year - how does a small division like this operate? a. In the training the agents are not presented with all the counterfeits to examine in order to learn how one might forge the dollar bills - but rather the agents are trained by studying the real thing - thus when confronted with a counterfeit they can readily spot it. D. And, so I hope this explains my approach to this study - we can spend all our time here this weekend studying all the false teachings and doctrines that men have come up with regards to the return of Christ (we would not have enough time in the days following to cover them all) - or we could look at the truth of God s Word on the subject and then apply that to a few of the major doctrinal falsehoods that are prevalent today. E. So let s begin by allowing the Word of God to reveal the truth to us as we diligently study to show ourselves approved before God - rightly dividing the Word of Truth - 2 Tim 2:15. - 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. F. Eschatology - big word for the Study of End Times 1. Much confusion on this subject - many ask are you a. A millennial? b. Pre millennial? c. Post millennial? Page 1 of 8
2. Many teach: a. Rapture out of the world living saints leaving behind the unrighteous...??? b. Expose and defeat a person called the Antichrist???? c. Begin a seven year period called the great tribulation??? d. Establish a material kingdom centered in Jerusalem & reign for a literal 1,000 years??? e. Restoration of National Israel??? 3. But what does all that mean and is all this Scriptural? a. Discuss the two Charts - slides 3 & 4 II. Pre millennialism ---- Based Upon God s Failure A. Really? Luke 1:32 (NKJV) ---- He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. B. Dispensationalism / Premillennialism Christ at His first advent offered the Jewish nation an earthly political kingdom... Because the Jewish nation rejected the Christ, this kingdom offer was retracted and the earthly, political, re-established Davidic kingdom was postponed until the future Jewish millennium. Between the withdrawal of the kingdom offer and the future millennial establishment of the kingdom was inserted the church age, a parenthesis in God's prophesied program for Israel and the nations. The present age and the present reign of Christ have no direct relationship to the Davidic covenant or to Messianic prophecy. 1. God Gave Prophecies & Promises That Were NOT Fulfilled! a. Seed Promise Genesis 3:16; 12:3; 22:18; Galatians 3:16 (1) Genesis 3:16 ---- 16 To the woman He said: I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you. (2) Genesis 17:1-8 ---- When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.2 And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly. 3 Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying:4 As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations.5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you.8 Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting Page 2 of 8
possession; and I will be their God. (a) FULFILMENT Joshua 21:43-45 ---- 43 So the LORD gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it.44 The LORD gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.45 Not a word failed of any good thing which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass. c. Kingdom Promise Isaiah 9:6; Dan 2:44; Colossians 1:13;Revelation 1:5,6; 5:9,10 (1) Isaiah 9:6 ---- 6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. (2) Daniel 2:44 ---- 44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. (a) FULFILMENT Colossians 1:13 ---- 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, (b) Revelation 1:5-6 ---- 5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. (c) Revelation 5:9-10 ---- 9 And they sang a new song, saying: You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, 10 And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth. 2. Because Israel Rejected Jesus As King God Changed His Plan! Really? a. They Tried To Force Him To Become King John 6:15; 18:36; Eph 3:9-11 (1) John 6:15 ---- 15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone. (2) John 18:36 ---- 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here. (3) Ephesians 3:9-11 ---- 9 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ;10 to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places,11 according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, b. They Were Looking For What The Millennialist Are Looking For Now Luke 2:25-28; Mk 15:43; John 12:12,13 (1) Luke 2:25-28 ---- 25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Christ.27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law,28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: 29 Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation (2) Mark 15:43 ---- 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself Page 3 of 8
waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. (3) John 12:12-13 ---- 12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD! The King of Israel! (a) Four Essential to Being a King i) A Kingdom made up of a) Land / Territory b) Subjects c) Law ii) Does Christ fit this? C. Based Upon Figurative Passages 1. Figurative Passages Are True i.e. They represent Something That Is Indeed Real But They Are Yet Representative Not To Be Understood As Literally Fulfilled By Being The Actual Thing Stated! 2. The Bible uses MANY figures of speech a. Revelation is a book of signs and symbols Rev. 1:1 ---- The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, 3. Millennialist Literalize Figurative Language & Makes Literal Language Figurative! a. Revelation compared to the epistles -(Rev 20 & 1 Cor. 15) b. Misapplying prophetic language & rejecting divinely inspired interpretation Dan 2:44; Mark 9:1 (1) Daniel 2:44 ---- 44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. (2) Mark 9:1 ---- And He said to them, Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power. (a) Acts 1:8 ---- 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. (b) Acts 2:1-4 ---- When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (c) Acts 2:47 ---- 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. (d) Revelation 1:9 ---- 9 I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. And they shall not escape.4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 2. 2 Peter 3:10 ---- 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 3. John 6:39-40,54 ---- 39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day. a. 54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 3. dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 2. Hebrews 11:13-16 ---- 13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.14 For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland.15 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return.16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. 3. Revelation 22:14 ---- 14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. F. Deliver Kingdom to Father - 1 Cor. 15:23-28 1. 1 Corinthians 15:23-28 ---- 23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ s at His coming.24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet.26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.27 For He has put all things under His feet. But when He says all things are put under Him, it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted.28 Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all. V. In Conclusion: A. Eschatology - big word for the Study of End Times 1. As one can see why there is so much confusion on this subject - many ask are you a. A millennial? b. Pre millennial? c. Post millennial? 2. But the Basis of Millennialism is error on the overall Deity of God a. How We Should Approach Scripture is very clear - read and you will understand B. The fact of the matter is: 1. Biblical Descriptions of Jesus Return Leaves No Place For Millennialism 2. Things That The Bible Says Will Occur When Jesus Returns Leaves No Place For Millennialism C. The central facts of Christ s return that the Scriptures reveal are: 1. Jesus Is Returning 2. Will Judge The World - John 12:48 ---- 48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 3. Destroy The World 2 Peter 3:9-14 ---- 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.11 Therefore, since all these Page 7 of 8
things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; D. The question is ARE YOU READY?? Page 8 of 8
