Trinity Lutheran Church Contemporary Worship Service Transfiguration of Our Lord February 10, 2013 10:45 a.m. ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP We welcome each other to worship in the name of God our Creator, our Redeemer, who walks with us and promises to be with us every step of our lives. SHARING OF THE PEACE SONG: The Church Song Chorus: We are the Church, the body of our Lord; We are all God s children, we have been restored. 1. The church is not a building where people go to pray; It s not made out of sticks and stones, it s not made out of clay. 2. You can go to worship but you cannot go to Church; You can t find a building that s alive no matter how your search. 3. The church is not a business, a committee, or a board; It s not a corporation for the business of the Lord. 4. The church, it is the people, living out their lives called, Enlightened, sanctified for the work of Jesus Christ. CCLI#1330601 1

CONFESSION (B=Band Side; O=Organ Side) B: We have not loved you with all or our hearts. O: We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. B: We have put up walls to keep people at a distance. O: We have failed to respond when someone is hurting. B: We are captured by our desire for material wealth. O: We forget those who do not have food or shelter. B: We abuse the gifts of your creation. O: We destroy your beauty out of ignorance and greed. B: We fail to respond to your call to do justice. O: We seek only comfort for ourselves. PROMISE OF FORGIVENESS: L: We are broken but God s promises are not. Through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven. All: God s promises call us together for a reason. PRAYER OF THE DAY: Gracious Creator, you have formed us in your own image and have promised to be with us forever. Open our hearts to your gentle presence so that we may be guided to do your will in the world. Amen. CHILDREN S TIME: Trading Cards Shivon Miller 2

SONG: Pass My Love Around 1. I have no feet but your feet, do the loving deed; I have no hands but your hands, fill the need. You are my eyes to see their pain, you are my heart beat. Do it in my name, rememb ring who you are! Chorus Pass my love around! You re my hands, my eyes, I gave you ears to hear their cries. Pass my love around, you re an angel in disguise, for you can make it come alive, for you can make it come alive. 2. And when you feel the heartache do the loving deed; and when you see the suff ring, fill the need. You are my eyes to see their pain, you are my heart beat. Do it in my name, respond right from the start! John Ylvisaker CCLI# 1330601 SCRIPTURE READINGS: Ephesians 4:1-16 1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. 7 But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ s gift. 8 Therefore it is said, When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people. 9 (When it says, He ascended, what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) 11 The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. 14 We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. 15 But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body s growth in building itself up in love. 3

PSALM: Psalm 67 1 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, 2 that your way may be known upon earth, your saving power among all nations. 3 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. 4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. 5 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. 6 The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, has blessed us. 7 May God continue to bless us; let all the ends of the earth revere him. GOSPEL: Luke 9:28-43 28 Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah not knowing what he said. 34 While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him! 36 When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen. 37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38 Just then a man from the crowd shouted, Teacher, I beg you to look at my son; he is my only child. 39 Suddenly a spirit seizes him, and all at once he shrieks. It convulses him until he foams at the mouth; it mauls him and will scarcely leave him. 40 I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not. 41 Jesus answered, You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here. 42 While he was coming, the demon dashed him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And all were astounded at the greatness of God. 4

VIDEO CLIP Basic Fellowship MESSAGE SHIVON MILLER SONG: Together We Can Find A Way Chorus Together we can build a better world Together we can find a way Together we can build a better world We feel it at the break of day. He s a Savior, He s a dreamer. He s a teacher now and then. He will comfort those who need him. He s a friend to the very end. We are children of the promise. But we wander off alone. When the darkness fall around us, With his love he will lead us home. By his spirit we are able. In the words of good St. Paul. Just remember Be ye faithful, And respond to the Savior s call. CARD COLLECTION CCLI # 1330601 STATEMENT OF FAITH (All) We believe God is our creator and has promised to love us always. We believe Jesus Christ, fully God, fully human experienced all the pain and joy and challenges of human life. God s forgiving love was revealed to us when Jesus suffered death on the cross. He came back to new life and has promised us new life in unity with God. We believe the Holy Spirit is God s promise touching our spirits, guiding us even through the darkest and most difficult moments of our lives. We believe God is among us in community. Mysterious, yet very real, God promises to be with us always, even to the end of the age. 5

We hope you feel at home here. You are surrounded by your brothers and sisters in Christ and the presence of God. If you are looking for a church home please talk to Pastor Evavold or Shivon Miller before you leave today and sign the guest book in the Narthex or call 218-724-9369. We invite you to join us downstairs for coffee and fellowship following the services. You can find us on the internet at www:tlcduluth.org or on Facebook at trinity@tlcduluth.org. Which One Is the Transfiguration? WORSHIP The reading for this Sunday includes an alternative extended ending (Luke 9:37-43a). Your community may or may not read this passage out loud, but it is certainly worth reading at some point this week whether during worship or in private devotions. The first ending the traditional Transfiguration reading concludes with the disciples keeping silent about their experience of Jesus transfiguration at the top of the mountain (presumably only until after Christ s resurrection, since the story is recorded in the gospels). This is the traditional narrative: Jesus appearing in glory and dazzling white, with Elijah and Moses close at hand. However, we might also suggest that the second story is equally a transfiguration, just of a different sort. God s Son, God s chosen, is listened to (v. 35); Jesus rebukes the unclean spirit, and the boy is healed and returned to his father. In this story it is not Jesus, but rather the boy, who is transfigured. His transfiguration not only heals his body but also restores him to community and family. This transfiguration has a similar effect as that of the transfiguration on the mountain: All were astounded at the greatness of God (v. 43a). In both instances, although it is Jesus who is either transfigured or transfiguring, God receives the glory. Paramount in any exaltation of Jesus is that he constantly points from himself to his Father. Real transfiguration consistently redirects to the greatness of God. Real transfiguration does not camp out on the mountain where it can be commemorated or captured. Instead, like God in the cloud that went before Israel, it is on the move healing and restoring as it goes. May we release the memories of our own mountaintop experiences to see how God might use them to transfigure our lives and the lives of those around us.
