Fourth Sunday of Easter 17 April 2016 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Pastor -- Jesus said: My sheep hear my voice; I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. (John 10:27-30 During this Easter Season the church rejoices in the gift of our salvation in Christ. The words of today s Gospel are truly a cause for rejoicing as Jesus reminds us that those who hear His voice shall not perish; He gives eternal life to the sheep; as Good Shepherd Jesus assures us that no one can separate us - no one can take them out of my hand! It is with this spirit of joy and trust in Jesus and His love for us that the church today celebrates a World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Today we pray that many within the church will have open ears - and open hearts - to generously respond to the call of the Good Shepherd to a vocation to the permanent diaconate, the priesthood, and consecrated life. Remember the advice so often spoken by the Lord: Do not be afraid. Let trust not fear fill our hearts as we pray with confidence for an increase in vocations. The Lord Jesus calls - May those called say Yes in lives of service to God and the church. God bless. Let us pray for one another In Christ Risen, World Day of Pray for Vocations Today the Church throughout the world prays for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life? - Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead. - Keep our parish priests in your prayers throughout the week. - Encourage your children, grandchildren, or other young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister. - Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God s call. COLLECTIONS April 9 & 10 $ 9,778 Envelopes Mailed 2,104 Amount Needed $13,425 Envelopes Received 623 SECOND COLLECTION The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place next week. One way that this appeal works to support home mission dioceses in the United States is by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on these dioceses, because educating each seminarian costs $35-40K per year. Your support is needed for these young men so that they might go back and serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to next week s appeal. Next weekend, April 23 & 24, there will be two collections. The first collection is for the support of the parish. The second collection is for the support of Catholic Home Missions. A sincere word of thanks to all who so generously responded to the many appeals for financial assistance during this Easter Season. Their generosity continues to make possible the mission and ministry of the parish. Easter Flowers $ 3,152 Easter Gift to the Church $33,080 Good Friday $ 4,820 Easter Sunday $20,914 Retired Priests $ 4,810 To all those who contributed to the special Fuel Collection last weekend. Through your goodness, a total of $4,334 was collected. Thank you and God bless. Our parish Bereavement Group will meet on Tuesday, May 3rd at 7pm in the Pastoral Center. Sister Theresa will be available for individual bereavement counseling sessions and can be contacted at (718) 746-8531. Page 3

MISSION STATEMENT As a community of believers in Jesus Christ and in Communion with the universal church, we strive to follow the Lord s command to love God and one another. Rooted in word and sacrament, we grow together as a Eucharistic community inviting all to the Good News of Jesus. PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH TO BE THE MOTHER OF VOCATIONS Father of mercy, who gave your Son for our salvation and who strengthens us always with the gifts of your Spirit, grant us Christian communities which are alive, fervent and joyous, which are fonts of fraternal life, and which nurture in the young the desire to consecrate themselves to you and to the work of evangelization. Sustain these communities in their commitment to offer appropriate vocational catechesis and ways of proceeding towards each one s particular consecration. Grant the wisdom needed for vocational discernment, so that in all things the greatness of your merciful love may shine forth. May Mary, Mother and guide of Jesus, intercede for each Christian community, so that, made fruitful by the Holy Spirit, it may be a source of true vocations for the service of the holy People of God. Amen. From Message of His Holiness Pope Francis on the Occasion of the 53rd World Day of Prayer for Vocations, April 17, 2016. Page 6

HOLY YEAR OF MERCY AT SAINT LUKE In passing through the Holy Door, then, may we feel that we ourselves are part of this mystery of love, of tenderness.
