THE BEST SUMMER EVER

WHAT IS THE BEST SUMMER EVER? I think this is going to be THE BEST SUMMER EVER. When you think about your best summer ever what comes to mind. For me it is a flood of memories of little league baseball, family travel, summer camps, VBS, swimming and lots of ice cream and snow cones. Summer is a time when we look forward to enjoying the warm weather, spending time with friends and family, and hopefully relaxing a little. As great as all those things are, I don t think they comprise, The Best Summer Ever. I believe this summer has the potential to be the best ever for us as individuals and as a church for a very specific reason. This summer, I want to invite you to encounter God in His Word. I want to invite you to hear His voice and be transformed by His Truth. I am absolutely convinced He wants to speak to you, and if you will take the time (about 30 minutes a day) you will look back on the summer of 2018 as a transformational time of spiritual growth, intimacy with Him and fruitfulness in your life. This summer I am challenging everyone in our church to read through the entire New Testament. It is here, we discover the story of Christ and His church. Over the course of 93 days we will read through 259 chapters of scripture. If 100 people join us on this journey we will read over 25,000 chapters of scripture together. I believe this could have the potential to unleash a fresh move of God s Spirit in our lives as individuals and in our church collectively. There are many different ways to read and study the Bible. I would like to introduce you to the S.O.A.P method. HOW TO USE THIS BOOKLET This booklet has been created to help you dive into the Word like never before this Summer. The SOAP method will invite you to document what you read in scripture, what observations you make, how you can apply this truth to your life, and how you can pray for God s guidance in living this out. At the end of the summer you will have an incredible account of all the ways God has spoken to you! Every day has 4 boxes for you to write in. SCRIPTURE Each day you will read a lot of scripture. That is a wonderful thing but it makes recall really difficult. As you read through the Bible each day underline or highlight the verses that stand out to you. When you are finished reading pick one verse that stands out to you as significant. Copy that verse in this box and make it a point to keep it in your head and heart throughout the day. At the end of the summer you will be able to look back and see where the Spirit was shining a light as you read through the Word. OBSERVATION In this box you will write down what you are observing in the text you have read. What stands out and seems meaningful or significant to you? What common theme do you notice, or what truth seems obvious and important? APPLICATION We don t just read the Bible for information, we read it to be transformed spiritually as we strive to become more and more like Christ. As we read through the text each day we are looking for one concept or truth that God is using to teach us and shape us. Use this box to write down how you can apply the truth of the Word to the reality of your life. Try to stick to just one application. It may be helpful to focus on the scripture you wrote in the first box and ask if there is anything in your life that needs to change to be faithful to the instruction and wisdom of God s Word. Essentially you are asking, How will I be different because of what I read today in God s Word? PRAYER You don t have the power to transform yourself spiritually. That only comes through the power of the Holy Spirit who is alive within you; teaching you and leading toward God s will for your life. Use this box to capture a short prayer confessing your need for him, and requesting His help applying the truth you have learned. This is also a great spot to thank Him for how He is working in your life. You can add a title for each day at the end of the journal to make your entries easier to find in the future. FOR FURTHER STUDY The SOAP approach to studying scripture is adapted from a wonderful book by Wayne Cordeiro entitled: The Divine Mentor. You can find this book on amazon.com.
