Thank you to everyone for the tremendous job in preparing the food for our annual Family Unity Night Thanksgiving Dinner. We had approximately 56 people who attended this event. Let s continue building up unity in our council. The Family Unity Night for December will be on the 20 th which we will be sharing this night with the community La Posadas at St. Genevieve. Thanks to all the Brothers, Ladies and family members for supporting and helping out with our Pancake Breakfast on Nov 12 th. The Pancake breakfast was a success. We were also able to donate 50 plates to El Caldito Soup Kitchen from tickets that were bought and donated from the Brothers. Thank you for your time, talents and generosity. I would like to thank all the Brothers who helped on Nov 18 th & 19 th at our Knights of Columbus Information Drive after all the masses at St Genevieve Parish. We were able to obtain 10 prospects who desired information regarding membership in the Knights of Columbus. Our next step is for the Admission Committee to meet with these individuals and further interview them. I encourage all brothers to carry a Prospect Card and continue recruiting candidates. COUNCIL/COMMUNITY Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser November 12th: In order to earn the dollars necessary to meet our operating costs, our council must net approximately $2000 from special fundraisers. (Council members can review the budget numbers by going to the MEMBERS ONLY section of our website: www.kofc13969.com). This year, our plan is to hold two pancake breakfast fundraisers. The first of these was held on November 12 th and netted about $950, so we are on target. One of the unique twists adopted for our pancake fundraisers is the idea of accepting ticket donations for breakfasts to be delivered to the needy at the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope. This idea was suggested last year by Brothers Ray Narvaez and Stephen Elchlepp, and was implemented again this year. We delivered 50 pancake and sausage breakfasts to the El Caldito Soup Kitchen. On Sunday, Brothers helped to cook and the Ladies Auxiliary served. Others brought their families to eat. Many who couldn t make it bought tickets and donated their breakfasts. It was a fun event and we met our profit goal! Reaching out to the Needy through our fundraisers: Last October, Brothers Navor Chavez and Alberto Grijalva brought about 25 breakfasts to the Gospel Rescue Mission. This time, Brothers Bill Klement and Alberto Grijalva delivered 50 meals to the El Caldito Soup Kitchen. The meals were refrigerated and distributed the following Tuesday morning. We packaged them so they could be taken home to eat. This activity allowed us to help others less fortunate than ourselves. FAMILY/CHURCH/COMMUNITY Annual Family Unity Night Thanksgiving Dinner: We had our annual, traditional Thanksgiving Dinner at the Family Unity Night of Wednesday, November 15 th. The Council provided two turkeys and a ham, and the participants brought the trimmings and desserts. For all of us, it was an opportunity to share an old-fashioned, traditional, family meal with our St. Genevieve/Knights of Columbus Family! We drew a record turnout of about 56 people all of us had a delightful evening of good food and good company. Remember everyone that we hold a Family Unity Night Potluck Dinner at 6:30 PM at the Parish Hall every third Wednesday of the month (except December, when we join in the Parish Christmas Posada). INSURANCE AGENT S MESSAGE Life Insurance As a Gift? The initial reaction for many people when you mention life insurance as a gift is a quick step back and a questioning stare. How morbid, they think. While it may seem that way when you first mention it, life insurance is really a thoughtful gift that can be a financial life preserver in tough times. The problem with life insurance is the general perception. Many think of death instead of the great benefits it provides, and the security that it offers even while you re alive. Life insurance should be thought of as a precautionary protective measure for a family unit. The purchase of this product can mean saving your home, sending your children to college, and preserving your spouse s quality of life in the event of your death. One of the times you may want to purchase life insurance for someone is when a family has a new baby. It s a great, low-cost way to set money aside for the future (i.e. college tuition, housing, business startup, etc.). Of greater importance, it ensures these children will have insurance as adults, in case an illness later in life makes him or her uninsurable. Newlyweds are also ideal recipients for life insurance. As they join their lives and financial responsibilities, young couples need to make sure that their early investments are fully protected. If something were to happen to one of them, the other may be faced with serious financial hardship. A life insurance policy is an ideal way to ensure their future and protect their assets. As nontraditional as it may be, life insurance is a wise and caring gift to purchase for many people. Matthew Seltzer (575) 936-7181 matthew.seltzer@kofc.com matthewseltzer.com Grand Knight s Message (from Pg 1) Please make plans to attend our upcoming Light up for Christ event on Tuesday, December 5 th after the 6:00 pm mass in front of St. Genevieve Church. Celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season with your family and council members in the manner it was intended, by Keeping Christ in Christmas. This event is open to everyone. A reception will follow in the conference room hosted by our Ladies Auxiliary. Thank you Ladies for all you do for us. Lady Cecilia and I would like to wish everyone and their families a very blessed Christmas season. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you. May God bless you, Jaime M. Flores, Grand Knight SPECIAL OLYMPICS/COUNCIL Award to Council 13969: The local Special Olympics of New Mexico Group that our council supports recently hosted the state basketball and bowling competitions held here in Las Cruces. We have supported this group over past years by providing volunteers for their activities and donating proceeds from our Mega Bingo Fundraiser. The main point-of-contact with this group is Brother Alberto Grijalva. At our November 8 th Business Meeting, Alberto presented a teeshirt, marking the Las Cruces competition, from the Special Olympics to Grand Knight Jaime Flores. We plan to devote a Family Unity Night this spring to honor our Special Olympic athletes, their families, and their coaches. Brother Alberto Grijalva Presents Award to GK Jaime Flores 5
