THE MUSIC OF MERCY THE VOICES OF MERCY Music has a beautiful way of making God s Word remain in our hearts. The Catechism of the Catholic Church quotes the famous expression of St. Augustine: He who sings, prays twice. Have you ever pondered those words? When we sing, we are participating in something more powerful than spoken language. Harmony and rhythm create an active atmosphere of spirit-filled prayer. Our intention becomes wholly focused on God, and we are able to feel His grace and feed our souls. It is an incredible and humbling experience! The Mercy Music Ministry strives to provide beautiful and purposeful sacred music to our parish. We have several opportunities available to congregation members that feel called to serve in this special way. Do you play an instrument or have a background in voice? Is your child a songbird in the pew? Ever had the urge to ring a shiny, brass handbell during Mass? Now is the best time of year for joining one of our esteemed ensembles! All choirs are eager to reach out and welcome new members with a passion for music. Please see the descriptions below for details about each group. If God is calling you to serve and become involved in the Music Ministry, I encourage you to reach out to us! God bless, Mr. Geoff Kannenberg Director of Music geoff.kannenberg@olomchurch.com (225) 928-6339 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. - Psalm 104:33 CHANCEL CHOIR & SCHOLA The Chancel Choir is in residence for 10:30 am Mass from August through the Feast of Corpus Christi. The choir s repertoire covers the entire range of traditional Catholic liturgical music from chant and motets to hymns and anthems. Our chamber choir, the Mercy Schola, consists of the highest caliber of trained singers and serves at special liturgies and events including the Easter Vigil. Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 beginning August 22nd. Please contact Director Geoff Kannenberg to discuss your interest. SANCTUARY BELLS The handbell choir at Mercy is made up of ringers who have experience reading music and rhythms. We ring for special feast days including Christmas and Easter. We practice on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 beginning August 22nd. Please contact Director Geoff Kannenberg to discuss your interest in the group and schedule an audition. EXULT Exult is a group that strives to move young and old alike closer to Christ through sacred song. We specialize in a blend traditional and contemporary music and lead worship at the weekly Sunday evening 6:00pm Mass routinely during the school year. We rehearse 1 hour prior to the Masses that we lead worship at 5:00 pm in the St. Cecilia (choir) room in the PAC. High school, college, and young adults alike are invited to participate. Please contact Director Geoff Kannenberg to schedule an audition. CHILDREN S CHOIR The Children s Choir sings for 9:00 am Mass every week during the school year. The choir rehearses once a week after school in the school choir room beginning mid-august. Children in grades 3-8 from all schools are invited to participate. Called to Action PARISH LIFE GARDEN OF PEACE & MEMORIAL COLUMBARIUM MAUSOLEUM NICHES FOR THE REVERENT INTERMENT OF CREMAINS ARE AVAILABLE NOW FOR PRE-CONSTRUCTION PURCHASE. Master Planning for our Future Parishioners will remember that during the period of Master Planning for our future, along with the priorities of new and expanding classrooms for our growing school and a desperately needed new gym, there was a strong interest in a Columbarium Garden for the interment of cremains. This project has been in the preparatory stage for quite some time and Our Lady of Mercy will soon begin offering columbarium spaces. In the next few weeks, a lunch and learn will be announced to speak specifically about our proposed Columbarium Garden. We will answer questions regarding pricing, location, figuration of the garden, and clarify any issues concerning Church teachings on cremation. The Catholic Church s Teachings on Cremation In the early years of the Church, during periods of persecution, the bodies of Christians were burned as an insult to the Christian belief of the resurrection of the body. For this reason, the Church for many centuries did not allow cremation since it was associated with disrespect and mockery of belief in the resurrection.centuries later, this is no longer the case and people today no longer associate cremation with those ideas. In May 1963, the Vatican Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith lifted the prohibition forbidding Catholics to choose cremation. This permission to be cremated was incorporated into the revised Code of Canon Law of 1983 (Canon No. 1176) as well as into the Order of Christian Funerals. The Bishops of the United States and the Holy See have authorized the celebration of a Catholic funeral liturgy with the cremated remains present. The Church does not prohibit cremation.
