Volume 18 Issue 6 June 2018 Why? Saying Goodbye That s the first question I received when I shared the news with the congregation council about my call to serve the United Church of the San Juans. I have to admit, it s a question I ve asked too. Sometimes it s just hard to explain how you know that God is calling you to a new thing. As James Martin explains it in Jesus a Pilgrimage, a book I read in preparation for our trip to the Holy Land, You re initially stunned Me? but you also intuit a sense of God s voice in the invitation. For me, that invitation came when I learned that a congregation in southwestern Colorado was looking for a pastor. The pastor they were looking for sounded exactly like me, and I felt compelled to explore the possibility of a call with them. After much soul searching...conversations with two Bishops (the Bishop of our St. Paul Area Synod and the Bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod)...many late night talks with Ken...and more nudgings and promptings of the Spirit than I can count, I put myself forward as a candidate with a deep sense of intuition that told me I would be their next pastor. The United Church of the San Juans confirmed that intuition with a vote to call me as their pastor on May 27, 2018. I m still not sure exactly what this will mean for Ken and me to enter this new call, but we enter it with the full assurance that God is leading us and, as we ve assured each other dozens of times in the last few months, we re in it together. It s not going to be easy, but in spite of the challenges that lie between today and the day we arrive in Colorado to call a new place home, we are starting to feel a sense of excitement about God leading us in this new direction. The hardest part, of course, will be saying goodbye to you. We have loved serving you and we will always carry you in our hearts. Thank you for a grand ten years. As we head west in our covered wagon (or U-Haul truck), we will be thinking of you, knowing that God has a wonderful new adventure in store for you too. In this season of leave-taking, the synod will help to identify an interim pastor who will lead you through the transition to prepare the way for a new pastor to step into the best congregation there is. Pastors Candee and Stefanie will also continue their roles, adding their strength to support you through this seismic change. As you explore the mission and ministry to which God is calling you, God will ensure that you call exactly the right pastor for your next chapter. You can be sure that God is already at work preparing that person for the call to Redeemer. That s how God works! God calls us to help build the kingdom wherever God needs us. It is a blessing to be able to answer the call. And, it has been the greatest blessing of my life to be your pastor. - Pastor Pam Stofferahn
