ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 3 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN A Blessed New Year! Numbers 6:22-27 We begin the new year with hope. It is filled with possibility. Our calendars look empty, but they will soon be filled with activity and events. We have plans for some of them. Other events will surprise us. We realize this year will bring its measure of sorrow, but we trust it to bring its measure of joy. Let this day and this year be a blessing! Today we hear the words of blessing spoken by God to Moses. The LORD bless you and keep you! They are words of protection. The LORD be gracious to you! They are words of favor. The LORD give you peace! They are words that wish the finest blessing, the gift of peace. This new year, with all its promise, gives us the possibility of blessing. Perhaps you have withheld blessing from someone you know. Perhaps you especially need God s gift of peace. Perhaps you fear the absence of God s protection. Let this blessing calm your heart. Let it inspire you to breathe God s gift of peace to all you meet this day and this new year. Let the blessing of God, first spoken to Moses, echoing throughout the ages, enter your home and warm your hearth. Written by Paul Turner. We would do well to imitate Mary in our New Year s resolution. Instead of criticizing let s keep it in our hearts. Criticism isn t productive or well received anyway! STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. LUKE 2:19 Miscellaneous Quotes by Pope Francis [T]he home represents the most precious human treasures, that of encounter, that of relations among people, different in age, culture and history, but who live together and together help one another to grow. For this reason, the home is a crucial place in life, where life grows and can be fulfilled, because it is a place in which every person learns to receive love and to give love. May 21, 2013 Mary is the perfect role model for living a stewardship lifestyle. She listened to God and said yes to His invitation to be the Holy Mother of His son. She also trusted in the God s providence on a daily basis. As we start a new year, take time every day to listen to how God is calling you; trust that He has a better plan for you than you could ever imagine. Prayer of the Faithful That we may see Mary as the perfect model of stewardship by her saying yes to the Lord. Stay connected with our mobile app-download now at myparishapp.com

Carolyn Kwiecinski Director of Evangelization and Adult Faith Formation 517-647-6505 ext. 418 carolynkwiecinski@portlandstpats.com PAMA Ecumenical Sanctity of Life Service January 29 th at 3:00 PM Baptist Church Celebrating the Successes of 2016 The end of the year always finds the circulation of many lists counting down the major events that happened. And before we ring in 2017, I would like to create my own list and look back at the top events for St. Patrick School during 2016. The year went so well that our top 10 list includes 11 items. It would be impossible to rank them in order of importance so I have placed them in chronological order instead. A site team visited St. Patrick School in May. The team approved our accreditation through the Michigan Association of Nonpublic Schools (MANS) for another five years. The Class of 2016 graduated in May with half of them having a weighted grade point average above 4.0 and graduating Magna Cum Laude. 80% were National Honor Society (NHS) members, 70% were Central Michigan Athletic Conference (CMAC) Scholar Athletes and each class member accepted an average of $20,500 in college scholarship money. The varsity boy s baseball team had a historic season that included the most wins in a season in school history and made it to the state championship game before finishing as State Runner-Ups. St. Patrick School began the new school year with its third consecutive year of enrollment growth. For the first time in five years, the high school has more than 100 students. As a whole, Catholic schools in the Diocese of Grand Rapids saw a second consecutive year of enrollment growth. The 7 th and 8 th grade classes attend the Holy Fire faith gathering in Chicago with thousands of other teens from around the country. This event provided them with an opportunity to grow in their faith through dynamic speakers, music, and time in adoration. Each member of the Class of 2020 received a Chromebook as St. Patrick School piloted a 1:1 program. With freshmen cross country phenomenon Ashton Walker finishing in 6 th place in the state and the football and volleyball teams advancing to the quarterfinals of their respective state tournaments, the school celebrated its best fall sports season since 2007. Our Quiz Bowl team competed on the Quizbusters show which airs on PBS to kick off their season. They completed an excellent season bringing home a second place league trophy and a third place league-tournament trophy. St. Patrick School hosted its first College Night with two featured speakers (one from Lansing Community College and one from Aquinas College), 12 colleges and one branch of the military sent representatives as well. The school participated in the Christmas Shoebox program through the Portland Community Fund with the goal of Big Rocks and Little Rocks working together to fill 80 shoeboxes. They ended up filling 148. St. Patrick School closes out the school year with gratitude for the support of many generous donors. Anonymous donors donated 30 Kindles to our second and third grade classroom and enough to allow us to purchase new tables for our cafeteria. The Class of 1966 (who had their 50-year reunion this year) donated $5,000 to the Father Flohe Foundation and another $5,000 to the school for technology upgrades. We Achieve! is the third and final part of our mission statement and it is evidenced by this list. Many hours of work by a great number of individuals were completed to make all of these events happen throughout 2016. We are excited about these accomplishments and are even more excited for the prospect of bigger and better things to come in 2017. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at St. Patrick School!
