One cold winter day a man was walking through town and came upon an elderly woman sitting in a corner. The elderly woman was shaking and shivering from the cold and looked very hungry, tired and in need of a good warm meal. When he saw the elderly woman, the man got very upset and said to God: Lord, why do you allow things like this to happen? Why don t you do something about this poor woman, and God replied, I have already done something about her. This surprised the man so he said, I don t know Lord: whatever you did, it doesn t seem to be working. I agree with you, God replied. by the way, what did you do? the man asked. I made you and sent you, came the reply. In the Gospel today, Jesus sends out the twelve apostles in two s as his representatives to drive out demons and anoint those who were sick and ill. It is okay to pray to God to fix the things that are wrong in our world, families, workplaces, ect. but we need to remember that God entrusts his work to us to carry out these tasks. As members of His Body, we are called to carry on the priestly ministry of Christ in our world by physically DOING SOMETHING so that he can work through us and speak through our voices. As Holy Apostles Parish it is even more important to continue the work our parish namesakes, the apostles started. The need continues today and we continue to do what we can as a parish to help. Any where I see suffering, that is where I want to be, doing what I can. Princess Diana There are so many ways you can help. You may not realize it, but even things like volunteering at the parish festival this summer is a great way to help. The festival helps to raise money that the parish uses to help the local food banks feed the hungry. We are also able to work hand-in-hand with Trinity Lutheran Church to provide much needed diapers to the needy in our local area. The Tag Sale helps to provide normal everyday household items to people who may not have been able to afford them otherwise. More importantly, the time you spend volunteering provides an opportunity to get to know others from the parish and the community. It is through those connections that our parish has been able to seek out and help more and more people in so many ways. We are God s instruments and we are sent out as his representatives to be His eyes, His ears, His hands, and His voice so that those who need it may experience the loving warmth of His Sacred Heart. What are you doing to live your faith? How can you help our wonderful parish seek out and minister to the needy in our community? What God given gifts and talents can you provide to help others experience the love of Christ? If you have a creative idea on how we can help others in our community and are willing to sacrifice the time to spearhead it, PLEASE call me or Mary our Social Minister to discuss it and put it into action. Maybe God is tugging at you to remind you that he made you and is trying to send you to carry on His work. Fr. Steve Celebrations of Life s Journey Together we welcome Diana Marie Camp and All who were baptized into our Faith & Family Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents Our sympathy is extended to the families of: David Linz and James Breisinger Eternal Rest Grant to Them O Lord, And Let Perpetual Light shine on Them. This week we hear about those who are sent by God to speak and act on His behalf. We share this calling! It is not just a nice thing to do, but it is our duty and our salvation to serve the Lord! We must understand that we exist to love and serve God in this life and the next. Only then, will we truly seek to know how God wants to use us for His glory! My brothers and sisters, like the twelve that Jesus sends out in the Gospel today, you and I are being sent out! Jesus says, take nothing for the journey. He means nothing earthly. We need to take love, joy, peace, patience, mercy, faith, and an obedient heart with us into this sin sick world! Let us heed the Lord s voice today and bring light to the darkness! In Christ Fr. Lillies of the Fields is a 1963 film starring Sidney Poitier, Lilia Skala, Stanley Adams and Dan Frazer. Sidney Poitier won the Academy Award in 1963 for this film. He became the first black man to win the award for Best Actor. Could you imagine Hollywood awarding someone an Academy Award today for a pro-catholic movie? Undying Faith, knowledge of the Bible and a firm reliance on God are some of the major themes of this movie. Sidney Poitier plays a wandering handyman who runs into a group of Eastern European nuns in Arizona. He was looking for water for his car and noticed them making a poor attempt to work on a fence. The nuns reveal that they are from Germany, Hungary and Austria. Their Mother Superior talks him into doing a small roof repair for them and spending the night. After spending the night, he attempts to talk Mother Superior into paying him for his work, even quoting Luke 10:7 (The laborer is worthy of his hire). Mother Superior asks him to read another Bible verse, from the Sermon on the Mount, Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow, they toil not, Neither do they spin. And yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." Somehow, he is talked into staying for another meal and doing another job. Deep inside, he hopes that Mother Superior will eventually pay him for his work. The nuns see this man as an answer to their prayers, and for their grand plans for the town. Mother Superior asks him to drive the nuns to Mass. He does not attend Mass, as he says that he is a Baptist. He learns that the Nuns escaped from East Germany, going over the Berlin Wall and endure many hardships in their day to day life and vocation. After some more Bible verse battles with Mother Superior, he agrees to help them in their grand plan. I give this movie Five Beards out of Five Beards for its wonderful story, but even more so for its promotion of using Bible verses to accomplish something good. What is your favorite Bible verse? If you don't have one, now is a good time to find one to help you in your day to day life experiences. Point of View As a children s author, one thing I have learned is that most children s stories are written from a single point of view, normally that of the central character. The young reader only experiences the story through that character s eyes, ears, thoughts, or feelings. The main character cannot know or assume what the other individuals in the story see, hear, think, or feel unless it is shown or told. Children can become confused when reading a book with multiple points of view. Unfortunately, we sometimes use a single point of view in life, as well. In my human selfishness, I often see the world only through my own eyes and make decisions based only on what I feel, disregarding what others want. God, however, has an omniscient point of view. He knows everything about everybody! While, of course, we are not God and cannot know what others think or feel, we can have an open mind. We can remove the blinders that keep us from respecting others perspectives. So many things in life require teamwork and accepting other approaches. Think about a construction project. You have your project manager, architect, surveyor, engineers, foremen, laborers, etc., each with expertise in their own field. All of the participants must respect the knowledge and experience of the others on the project and work together to get the job done. A sports team would never be successful if the players didn t realize that each member brings his/her own strengths and talents to the game. We can apply this to any relationship, team, or committee. A current example would be our upcoming summer festival. Its success depends upon each individual doing what they do best as part of a large team of volunteers. We are all blessed with different gifts and we must recognize the contributions of our fellow parishioners to make our parish committees and events successful. A single point of view might be essential in a children s story, but it rarely works in real life. See you at the festival I ll be the one with the camera! SAVE THIS WEEKEND Holy Apostles Parish Women Retreat St. Paul s Retreat Center Friday, Sept. 28th to Sunday, Sept. 30th For more information call Jean Beck.. 412-881-9283 Mary Ann Major. 412-882-4883 Saturday August 11, 2018 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM Through the Cross and Resurrection, Jesus has opened for us a way into heaven. This gives us the type of Hope that will not disappoint because it is packaged in God s love. Relying on this Hope we know that Jesus will hear our prayers and strengthen our character to provide the Healing grace needed to face the many struggles of this world. We welcome Fr. John Skirtich, Administrator of St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin parish in Whitehall, as presider and homilist, and look forward to having him share his insights on this month s theme. This service is an overwhelming celebration of Jesus, with adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Benediction and Eucharistic Procession. The buzzard, the bat, & the bumblebee: If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet and is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top. The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkable nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash. A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself. In many ways, we people are like the buzzard, the bat, and the bumblebee. We struggle about with all our problems and frustrations, never realizing that all we have to do is look up! That s the answer, the escape route and the solution to any problem... just look up!
