Lesson Text: I Timothy 6:11-21 King James Version (KJV) Sunday, February 25, 2018 I. PAUL GIVES TIMOTHY SOME HELPFUL INSTRUCTIONS (I Timothy 6:11-16) 11. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 13. I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; 14. That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: 15. Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 16. Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

II. PAUL GIVES TIMOTHY SOME IMPORTANT COMMANDS (I Timothy 6:17-21) 17. Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 18. That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; 19. Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. 20. O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 21. Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. New International Version (NIV) I. PAUL GIVES TIMOTHY SOME HELPFUL INSTRUCTIONS (I Timothy 6:11-16)

11. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13. In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14. to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15. which God will bring about in his own time God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16. who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen. II. PAUL GIVES TIMOTHY SOME IMPORTANT COMMANDS (I Timothy 6:17-21) 17. Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides

us with everything for our enjoyment. 18. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 20. Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21. which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith. Grace be with you all. PRACTICAL POINTS: 1. It s not enough for us to turn from temptation, we must also actively pursue Christian virtues (I Timothy 6:11-12). 2. We must live the Christian life with the knowledge that we are being observed by both God and man (I Timothy 6:13-14; Hebrews 12:1). 3. God chooses what He reveals about Himself, and He does

so in His own time, and for His own purpose (I Timothy 6:15-16). 4. God gives us material wealth to be used for His people and not for selfishness (I Timothy 6:17-18). 5. As we share our wealth with others, we are laying up rewards when Jesus returns (I Timothy 6:19; I Corinthians 3:13-15). 6. Christians should focus on the truth that God has committed to us and avoid debates that don t matter (I Timothy 6:20-21). ***The Bible Expositor and Illuminator, Union Gospel Press***
