MESSIAH MESSENGER Published by MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH www.messiahsouth.org Phone: 570-326-9171 e-mail address: messiahoffice@comcast.net May 16, 2018 VOL. 76 NO. 20 The New Secretary As many of you may know, Linda Herbst is retiring at the end of May as Messiah s church secretary after 19 years of dedicated service. You may also know that someone named Wilma Reeder has been hired to try to fill her shoes. Who is Wilma? I am Wilma, a lifelong Lutheran. I was baptized by Reverend Wayne Peterman and grew up in St. Matthew s Lutheran Church on Pearl Street in Newberry. Later I would become a member of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church and both my children, Jennifer and Marc would be baptized by Reverend Francis Bell. Much, much later my granddaughter would be baptized in St. Luke s by Pastor Anke Deibler. I am especially excited to be a part of Messiah s family because my great-great uncle, Dr. Robert G. Bannen served as a pastor in the church s early years. One of the first things you will discover about me is that I love photography as I will soon be sharing my photos on Messiah s Facebook page. Over time as we learn more about each other I hope we all will become good friends. THREE PREPARED FOR CONFIRMATION ON MAY 20 th Three members of the Messiah Family are prepared to affirm their Baptism in the Rite of Confirmation May 20 at 8:15am. The young adults who have worked diligently to complete their instruction requirements are: Megan Aungst, Alexa Greevy, and Jackson Peck. Confirmation provides an opportunity for the young adults to affirm the covenant God made with them in Holy Baptism. As parents, sponsors, and fellow members we recognize them as adult members of the church and rejoice with them.

The Library Corner Highlighted Books for the Week: Children - The Pentecost Story - The story of the coming of the Holy Spirit - This book is one of our Arch Books on the spinner in the library. It shares the story of the church's beginnings. Reading level is 3rd grade. Great book for classes as well as individuals and families to read. Adult - The Freedom of a Christian 1520 - the Annotated Luther Study Edition This book provides fresh translations of a dozen core Luther texts from the pd. 1517 to 1520. Public statements, sermons, major treatises, and letters that were previously scattered widely across five different volumes of the American Edition of Luther's Works (plus the welcome addition of the lesser-known Sermon on Indulgences and Grace, which doesn't appear in Luther's Works.)
